Catherine Ford was just about to say “don’t get too close to me” when Grace Clarke’s voice suddenly sounded from behind, startling her into a shiver, and she growled low, “Benjamin Jones, stay put!”

“Pain.”

With his eyes closed, Benjamin Jones strained to utter just that one word. Catherine heard it and felt a tug on her heart, “Where does it hurt? Hang in there; we’re going to the hospital right now.”

But after she spoke, the man on her shoulder no longer responded to her. Catherine was in a panic, and then she heard an astonished voice behind her, “Cath… Catherine, what are you doing, and who is this?”
