Chapter 21 - 21 21 Body Search
Chapter 21: Chapter 21: Body Search Chapter 21: Chapter 21: Body Search Fu Peng squinted his triangular eyes full of suspicion as he stroked his chin and scrutinized Fu Song for a moment, his voice cold as ice, “What do you want from me?”
Fu Song hung his head low, his toe tapping on a stone, his voice echoing in the pot-like enclosure as he replied, “Someone came to our house this morning and gave me five dollars, saying it was for you to repay a debt.
I was afraid I’d lose it, so I brought it to you on purpose.”
He handed over the five dollars Meng Chuyue had given him that morning, trembling with fear.
He was extremely reluctant to part with those five dollars.
But he knew the suspicious-natured Fu Peng would certainly search his body.
The day before yesterday, he had heard Fu Peng complaining about some people who hadn’t repaid the money they borrowed, so he took the occasion to feign retreat as an advance.
Fu Peng’s expression softened a bit, but after taking the money, he still searched Fu Song’s body.
He was highly suspicious that Fu Song had come to the train station to make an escape and that he had more than just those five dollars on him.
He thoroughly checked Fu Song from head to toe, not even sparing the insides of his shoes.
Of course, he came up empty-handed.
Even so, he still waited until the train started “clunking” down the track and Fu Song had no train to board before leaving with a cold face, accompanied by his friends.
When they had gone far enough away, Meng Chuyue took Fu Song to a secluded spot at the station.
“Xiao Song, if you want to leave today, there’s another way to do it; that is to hop on the coal transport train.
It’s very hot up there, and it’ll be tough.
Are you willing?
If you are, we can go now.
If not, I…
we can leave tomorrow too.”
This was a new idea she had just come up with.
The reason their extremely remote small town had a train station was that there were several coal mines nearby that needed to transport coal to various parts of the country.
She didn’t know exactly when the coal train would leave, only that it was said to be in the morning, later than the passenger train.
Fu Song, originally disheartened, immediately brightened up at her words.
“I’m not afraid of suffering.
I, too, hope to leave today.
Besides, what if we run into Fu Peng again tomorrow?”
It was summer now, and today was a bright sunny day, so it was exceptionally hot on the coal train.
Meng Chuyue, concerned that Fu Song wouldn’t be able to endure the heat, decided to find out when the train was leaving.
If there was enough time, she would buy some protective items.
There were still people at the train station’s ticket office, so she went up to the young and beautiful ticket clerk.
“Hello, do you know what time the coal train usually departs?”
The clerk was enthusiastic.
“Between 10:00 and 10:30 in the morning.
Why do you ask?
Did you miss your train today and are considering hopping on the coal transport train?
Let me tell you, unless absolutely necessary, you should never do that.
On such a hot day, the coal up there gets so hot it can cook a person alive.”
Meng Chuyue smiled awkwardly.
“I’m just asking.
Thank you.”
With that, she quickly left.
…
Even though the ticket clerk was speaking the hard truth, Meng Chuyue was still prepared to hop on the coal transport train.
There was time, and if she bought some items to prepare, it wouldn’t be a big problem.
She told Fu Song to wait at the entrance to the town while she went to the market and bought a big bag of items which she packed into a green Oxford bag.
The coal train’s departure point was a little over a mile from the town, in the opposite direction of Xiaoliu Village, and also happened to be on the way to the town’s health clinic.
Before leaving town, she encountered several villagers.
They were puzzled to see her heading in the opposite direction, lugging a big bag of items, and asked why.
She lied to them, saying, “This is something my mom asked someone to bring back for me, and I’m now on my way to the health clinic for an IV drip.”
Her lies were seamless, and everyone believed her.
She and Fu Song managed to arrive smoothly at the coal train’s departure point at around 9:50 a.m.
The coal train was still being loaded, and there was plenty of time left.
Noticing a lot of stacks of bricks, Meng Chuyue decided to take Fu Song over there to find some shade.
And, she let him change into long clothes.
Just moments ago, she had bought two sets of long pants and long coats for both Fu Song and herself.
She had also bought a thick tarp about ten square feet in size, two large umbrellas, four bottles of soda, two cans each of pear and orange, and some biscuits.
What do you think?
