God fucking damn. Rael whistled in surprise. 151 levels in one go. Thank you, Mimic dungeon.
But it was also about time he let go of Zafira, since he was holding onto her pretty tightly.
He set her down gently and glanced around.
Unlike the previous room that had incubators and moths everywhere, this one was much, much quieter.
It was dark all around, and honestly, without checking the map, he couldn’t see a way out.
The soft soil wasn’t very pleasant either.
Yet as he was about to observe further, another pop-up appeared in front of him.
<You’ve Destroyed a Mimic Dungeon Core!>
Only three cores? It’s usually five, Rael wondered as he suddenly felt a tug on his sleeve.
“You really like holding me, don’t you?” Zafira asked with a teasing smile.
Rael’s brows twitched. “Can you blame me?”
“Of course not.” She giggled. “I know you don’t have any bad intentions with me… your heartbeat was even faster than mine earlier. I think it’s a new record.”
“…” Rael sighed as he scratched his cheek in embarrassment.
She was just too lovely, and of course, he had feelings for her.
From the start, Zafira had caught his eye, and over time, he couldn’t help but become addicted to just her presence alone.
But just as he was starting to immerse himself in his thoughts, she spoke.
“Rael?” Zafira called out as she pointed toward her leg.
She tried to lift it, but it didn’t even budge.
Rael frowned as he tried to take a step toward her, but like her, he was stuck.
“The fuck? Is this some magical quicksand?”
It didn’t exactly feel like they were sinking, however, it seemed that at some point, they had sunk up to their knees, and now, it was difficult to escape.
Rael didn’t panic as he took out his Violin Blade and tapped the red string several times.
However, no matter how much he tried to free himself, it seemed like he was stuck.
Do I have to buy an escape scroll already or something? This is way too early… Rael thought with a sigh, glancing toward Zafira, who didn’t look panicked either.
She met his gaze and flashed a wry smile.
“Can’t say I saw this coming,” Zafira remarked as she pretended to fall toward him.
Rael’s eyes widened as he reached out, trying to grab her.
But she simply stopped midway through. After all, she was knee-deep in this weird cold substance.
“I guess we can wait and see. Maybe a monster will come and fetch us,” Zafira commented. “A spider maybe? Toxins that could help us escape.”
“No…” Rael shook his head. “I think I get the gist of this now.”
Mimic dungeons were not dangerous, but they were tricky.
Why?
Mimic dungeons mimic the emotions, habits, and everything else of the people inside.
And in this scenario, they were probably undergoing some sort of secret trial. That also meant there was a way to escape, but he just didn’t know how.
But if he had to guess, then it was likely tied to their emotions.
So, he decided to test it out.
“Zafira.” He called out, getting her attention.
She turned toward him and tilted her head. “Yes?”
“You’re beautiful.”
The moment he said those words, he saw her eyes momentarily widen.
However, that was not all that happened, as they suddenly sank a bit deeper.
Now, they were thigh-deep, the substance nearly reaching their abdomens.
“I understand it now…” Rael muttered, glancing straight into Zafira’s red eyes. “We need to give compliments to each other… I think.”
Zafira stared at him for a moment before bursting out laughing.
“Pfft… hahaha, really?” She wiped a tear with her slightly trembling finger. “A dungeon where we have to c-confess? That’s a bit far-fetched, don’t you think?”
“I’m serious,” Rael said flatly, causing her to halt.
But before she could speak, he reached for her hand and interlaced his fingers with hers.
Then, he finally spoke.
“You know, I’ve played this scenario out hundreds, if not thousands of times inside my head, but it never gets any simpler,” Rael said as he gently caressed her hand.
“I’ve known you for a month now. And like I’ve already said, a bit longer than that,” he added. “But the feelings I have… They’re not for the version of you I once knew. They’re for who you are now. The you right in front of me. The you who teases me constantly. The you who’s always calm, and the you who makes my heart beat the loudest when you’re around.”
Zafira’s cheeks reddened, and her palms grew sweaty, but even then, she knew what was coming. And so did he.
For once, he managed to break that confident façade, and now, she was nothing more than a shy girl, waiting to hear the finale of his words.
They sank deeper into the substance, and just as Rael was about to speak, she spoke instead.
“Y-You know… I didn’t marry you because I wanted to escape the other rulers. I wasn’t actually afraid of their proposals, since Celestara had a few loopholes in the marriage system,” she stammered, her eyes darting everywhere.
For the first time in forever, she seemed more flustered than he was. But that was always a good thing.
After all, it was not every day he could see this effortless beauty looking at him with a flushed face.
There was a moment of silence as her words hung in the air, but soon, she continued.
“I didn’t want you to leave, but it was not because of Celestara’s future…” Zafira muttered, deliberately avoiding his gaze as she focused on the substance that had reached up to their chests.
“The truth is… I wanted you to stay by my side. I-I just wanted you all to myself, since for the first time since I was a child, you showed me what it felt like to have someone to worry and care about,” Zafira added, and they sank further.
The atmosphere was warm, but not as warm as Rael’s feelings for Zafira.
Therefore, he reached out with a trembling hand and placed it on her warm cheek.
His fingers traveled down to her chin as he slowly lifted it up, bringing her flustered eyes to his own.
And then, with a warm smile, Rael finally confessed.
“Zafira… I’m in love with you.”
What do you think?
