Pokemon: Reborn Rich Alternate Earth

Chapter 388: If You Die

About forty minutes later, Julian and Nicole arrived above the hospital where Duke was currently staying.

Parkway Hospital—one of the most renowned hospitals in Orient City, and even the entire country. Every day, it received countless critically ill and complex cases from all over.

After recalling Dragonite and Metagross into their Poké Balls, Julian quickly chased after Nicole, who had already rushed into the inpatient building.

They took the elevator up to the 32nd floor, where Duke was, but the moment they stepped out, they were stopped at the elevator entrance.

"No one is allowed to enter right now."

It was clear—the entire floor had been sealed off due to Duke’s severe poisoning.

But Nicole was too anxious to consider this. She tried to push forward, her voice urgent—

"Let me through! My grandpa is in there!"

"And you are?"

Hearing this, the staff immediately asked, "Are you Champion Duke’s granddaughter?"

"Yes!"

Nicole nodded quickly.

But even then, they did not step aside. After all, who could guarantee her identity? Even if she looked like Nicole, that didn’t mean she was her—she could easily be an imposter wearing a Ditto disguise.

During such sensitive times, there was no room for negligence.

"Please wait a moment."

One of the staff members spoke, and whispered a few words into an earpiece.

Nicole was so anxious that tears started falling from her eyes again. Julian stood beside her and whispered in a reassuring tone—

"Your grandfather is the strongest Champion in Drakoria, he'll be fine."

But in her state of panic, Nicole didn’t even seem to hear him. Which made sense—after all, Julian wasn’t the one with a poisoned family member. No matter what he said, it would have little effect.

Not long after, a beautiful woman rushed over from around a corner in the hallway.

"Mom!"

As soon as Nicole saw her, she shouted.

"Nicole!"

The woman quickened her pace, stopping in front of the staff.

"She’s my daughter, it’s fine."

The staff nodded and finally let her through.

Julian naturally followed behind, but just as he was about to step forward, an arm suddenly blocked his way.

"Apologies, unauthorized personnel are not allowed inside."

Julian: (⊙_⊙)

"He’s my grandson."

Just as Nicole was about to speak up for Julian, a familiar voice interrupted.

"Grandpa!"

Julian looked at John with a bit of surprise.

Since John Walker himself had come out to vouch for Julian, there was no longer any issue.

With that, the group finally entered the hospital room where Duke was being treated. However, because of his severe poisoning, they could only observe from behind a glass wall—they weren't allowed inside.

Inside the room, three Blissey were using Heal Pulse in an attempt to help, but it didn’t seem to be having much effect.

Duke’s exposed skin had turned a pale purple, and signs of necrosis had already begun to appear.

Inside the room, aside from the three Blissey, there was also an elderly man whose identity was unknown.

But considering Duke’s identity, anyone treating him had to be a top-tier medical expert.

Not long after, the man stepped out of the ward. Nicole’s mother hurried forward, her voice filled with anxiety—

"Dr. Reid, how's my father-in-law? Will he be okay?"

"Champion Duke's condition is critical. The toxins in his body are extremely complex—some are corrosive, attacking his flesh, while others are neurotoxic, eroding his nervous system."

"And this particular poison... I’ve never seen it before. It appears to be a newly synthesized toxin."

Hearing this, both the mother and daughter panicked, completely at a loss for what to do.

On the contrary, John asked solemnly: "Dr. Reid, what can we do now?"

"With my medical expertise, combined with Pokémon assistance, I can keep Champion Duke stable for three days. Within these three days, we must identify the exact composition of the toxin—only then can we formulate the right antidote."

John nodded: "Then I’ll leave it to you, Dr. Reid, and the Poison-type Elite is on his way as well—he’ll be joining the treatment soon."

"That's good, if the Poison Elite joins in, we might have a better chance of countering this toxin," Dr. Reid nodded.

With that, he quickly turned and rushed off—there was no time to waste, he needed to analyze Duke’s blood samples immediately.

"Grandpa, how did Champion Duke even get poisoned?" Julian finally asked.

Duke was a Psychic-type Champion. Even in battle, he was always protected by his powerful Psychic-type Pokémon. What kind of Pokémon could possibly break through a Champion-level Psychic Pokémon’s defense and land such a devastating attack?

John’s expression darkened.

"It was the Poison-type Champion from Babath."

"A new ruin was recently discovered in Drakoria’s maritime territory. According to intelligence, the Babath Champion, along with several Elites from their country, planned to infiltrate it."

"Duke and I decided to eliminate them right then and there, to make sure they never left that ruin."

"But..." John’s fists clenched.

"That intelligence officer f***ing betrayed Drakoria, the intel he gave was false."

"There weren’t just a few Elites who infiltrated, but three Champions, the Poison-type Champion from Babath, the Fire-type Champion from Wyvernia, and the Ice-type Champion from Australis."

"Duke covered my retreat, and that’s how he got ambushed by that bas***d from Babath."

His voice grew harsher, his rage boiling over. He slammed his fist into the wall, his imposing body exuding anger like a erupting volcano.

"If it wasn’t for the life-saving treasure Duke carries, he wouldn’t have survived this long," John continued.

'No wonder!'

Julian thought to himself.

If the attack came from a Champion-level Poison-type Pokémon, Duke should have died on the spot.

A mere mortal body couldn’t possibly withstand the venom of a Champion-level Poison-type Pokémon.

Even Julian, with his Mega Pallet Town physique, wouldn’t necessarily hold up. After all, he was the guy who couldn’t even resist Gengar’s paralysis.

But Duke was still alive, he had endured the poison for this long without succumbing, which clearly meant something was keeping him alive.

As Drakoria’s strongest Champion, it was impossible for him not to carry some kind of life-saving treasure.

John suddenly let out a deep chuckle, then spoke in his usual bold and straightforward manner—

"Don't worry, you old bas***d, if you die, my grandson will marry your granddaughter right away—no one will dare bully your family!"

Julian: '…Should I call this repaying kindness or taking advantage of the situation? (Damn it.)'

Also—

'Can you at least ask me first?!'

'And more importantly, can you NOT say that in front of their family?!'

Julian could already feel the weird looks Nicole and her mother were giving him and his grandfather.

'Great. Now they probably think we’re just waiting for Duke to die so we can swoop in.'

But despite his complaints, Julian understood what John meant.

If Duke died, his family would lose their strongest protector. The rest of the family, though powerful, were not on the same level—they wouldn’t be able to safeguard the entire clan.

In that case, they would have no choice but to offer benefits to other major families for protection.

But if Julian married Nicole, then even without Champion Duke, their family would still have John, another Champion-level powerhouse.

Any powerful families eyeing their family would have to reconsider.

In a way, this could be regarded as repaying Duke’s life-saving grace.

Meanwhile, Nicole kept her head down, silently sobbing, while her mother gently hugged her, whispering—

"It’s going to be okay… Your grandfather will definitely pull through."
