Chapter 394: Into the Abyss
The cavern's entrance yawned before them, a gaping maw in the cliffside that seemed to swallow the moonlight. Seraphis stood at the forefront, her silhouette outlined against the dim glow emanating from within. The air was thick with the scent of brine and something more ancient, a musky odor that spoke of things long forgotten.
Lysara approached, her twin daggers gleaming faintly. "Are you certain about this?" she inquired, her voice a blend of concern and resolve.
Seraphis's white eyes remained fixed on the darkness ahead. "We have little choice," she replied. "The Kraelgoroth has retreated into this cave. If we don't pursue it, it will return stronger."
Rilk, ever the pragmatist, tightened his grip on his crossbow. "Then let's finish this," he said, determination etched into his features.
With a collective nod, the crew advanced, their footsteps echoing softly against the stone. The cave walls were slick with moisture, glistening in the faint luminescence that seemed to seep from the very rock. Strange, bioluminescent fungi clung to the surfaces, casting eerie shadows that danced with each movement.
Deeper they ventured, the passage narrowing and the air growing colder. The rhythmic drip of water was the only sound accompanying their cautious steps. Then, a voice, guttural and resonant, echoed through the cavern:
"I've heard of you, bird. Seraphis, the Raven. I've often wondered how you might taste."
The crew halted, weapons at the ready. From the shadows ahead, the Kraelgoroth emerged, its massive form coiling and uncoiling with serpentine grace. The bioluminescent spines along its crest pulsed rhythmically, casting a sickly glow that illuminated its grotesque features.
Seraphis stepped forward, her sword reflecting the creature's glow. "Your curiosity will be your downfall," she retorted, her voice unwavering.
The Kraelgoroth's eyes narrowed, and with a sudden, fluid motion, it lunged. Seraphis sidestepped, bringing her sword down in a swift arc that glanced off the beast's armored scales. Lysara was a blur beside her, her daggers seeking the softer flesh between the scales.
The cavern erupted into chaos. Tentacles lashed out, smashing against the walls and sending shards of rock cascading. Rilk fired bolt after bolt, each finding its mark but doing little to slow the creature's assault.
"Aim for the eyes!" Seraphis commanded, dodging another strike. "Blind it!"
The crew adjusted their tactics, focusing their attacks on the Kraelgoroth's glowing eyes. Lysara leaped onto a tentacle, using it as a springboard to propel herself toward the creature's face. Her daggers flashed, slicing through the air toward one of the luminous orbs.
A bellow of pain echoed as Lysara's blade found its target. The Kraelgoroth recoiled, its injured eye darkening. Seizing the opportunity, Seraphis charged, her sword aimed at the other eye.
But the beast was not so easily bested. With a powerful sweep of its tail, it sent Seraphis crashing into the cavern wall. Pain shot through her as she struggled to her feet, her vision blurred.
"Seraphis!" Lysara's voice was laced with concern as she fended off another tentacle.
"I'm fine," Seraphis gritted out, shaking off the daze. "Keep pressing!"
The Kraelgoroth's remaining eye glowed with fury. It opened its maw, revealing rows of jagged teeth, and unleashed a deafening roar. The very ground trembled, stalactites dislodging from the ceiling and crashing down.
"Watch out!" Rilk shouted, narrowly avoiding a falling shard.
The crew scattered, seeking cover as the cavern threatened to collapse. Amidst the turmoil, Seraphis noticed a narrow tunnel branching off to the side. An idea formed.
"Lysara, Rilk, with me!" she called, sprinting toward the tunnel.
The two followed without hesitation, the Kraelgoroth's attention momentarily diverted. The tunnel was tight, forcing them to move single file. The walls pulsed with the same eerie glow, casting elongated shadows.
Emerging into a larger chamber, they found themselves standing before a subterranean lake. The water was dark, its surface disturbed by gentle ripples. In the center, a small island rose, upon which rested a crystalline formation that shimmered with an inner light.
"What is that?" Rilk asked, eyes wide.
"A power source," Seraphis surmised. "Perhaps it's connected to the Kraelgoroth."
Lysara nodded. "If we destroy it, it might weaken the beast."
Determined, they waded into the water, the chill seeping through their boots. Reaching the island, Seraphis raised her sword, preparing to strike the crystal.
A sudden surge of water erupted as the Kraelgoroth burst into the chamber
What do you think?
