Chapter 363: The Raven's Perch Battle
The Call to Arms
The Raven's Perch sat atop a jagged cliff, its towering structure overlooking the stormy seas. Lightning split the sky, illuminating the desolate waters below, the winds howling like wild beasts. The sea was eerily calm, yet Seraphis knew something was coming. The tension in the air was palpable. Her crew moved in swift, disciplined motions, preparing for the battle they all knew would come.
"Enemy sighted! Enemy sighted!" A lookout shouted from the crow's nest, his voice carrying over the wind.
Seraphis’s cold, white eyes narrowed as she strode to the ship’s edge, her long cloak billowing behind her like a spectral force. She could see it now, through the mist and rain—the ship they had been expecting.
The Bloody Maiden, a pirate ship, cut through the waves with ease, its red sails torn and stained by time. The ship was a monstrous beast, and its figurehead—a twisted, snarling sea serpent—seemed to mock the very skies as it sailed toward them.
"Ready the crossbows!" Seraphis ordered.
Her crew, ever loyal and swift, moved into action. Crossbowmen took their positions along the railing, preparing the downstrike crossbows that Seraphis had devised. These weapons were no ordinary ranged tools—they were large, double-barreled crossbows capable of launching arrows with tremendous force and precision.
Lysara stood by her side, glancing up at her. "Captain Cutlass, huh? He’s as infamous as they come, Seraphis," she said with a grin, knowing that this battle would be no simple affair.
Seraphis nodded, eyes locked on the approaching enemy. "I've heard the rumors. We'll see what he's made of."
The First Volley
The moment the ships were within range, Seraphis gave the signal. "Fire!"
A thunderous roar echoed across the battlefield as the downstrike crossbows unleashed a flurry of arrows. The bolts whistled through the air, aimed at the Bloody Maiden's mast. The power behind the launch was enough to send splinters of wood flying as they struck their target.
But Captain Cutlass was no amateur. The Bloody Maiden had defensive measures.
"She’s a tough one, ain't she?" Cutlass muttered, watching the bolts fly through the air.
The ship tilted and swerved, narrowly avoiding the full impact of the arrows. A few bolts struck the deck, causing a few pirates to scatter, but the ship kept its course, slicing through the waves with ease.
Seraphis wasn’t done yet. "Arrowstorm! Unleash!" she shouted.
From her position, she raised one hand, and the air seemed to bend and ripple around her. Her mana flared, and in an instant, the air was filled with dozens of arrows—Arrowstorm in full effect. These arrows, imbued with Seraphis’s magic, rained down from the sky, their trajectory swift and relentless. The sky itself seemed to crack under the force of the attack.
The rain of arrows pounded the pirate ship, some piercing the sails, others striking pirates who had been caught in the open. The battle intensified as the Bloody Maiden's crew scrambled to avoid the onslaught.
Seraphis stood tall, the air around her shimmering with a faint barrier—her defensive barrier that she activated in preparation. The barrier deflected most of the incoming attacks aimed at her and her crew, ensuring that they remained safe while engaging the enemy.
Lysara, standing beside her, smiled grimly. "You’ve got them on the ropes, Seraphis."
Seraphis didn’t respond, her focus absolute as she observed the enemy ship.
The Bloody Maiden Strikes Back
“Ahhh, that’s what I be thinkin’,” came the voice, rough and amused.
Seraphis’s eyes narrowed as she recognized the voice. Captain Cutlass had appeared at the front of his ship, standing tall like a lion about to pounce. His dark, sharp eyes scanned the battlefield, and his lips curled into a sinister grin.
“And this time, the name’s ‘Seraphis.’” Cutlass’s voice carried over the waves, mocking, confident.
Seraphis didn’t flinch. She merely stared, her daggers now drawn, ready for what was to come. “You have a lot of talk for someone about to die,” she muttered, more to herself than to him.
Cutlass raised an eyebrow. “Oho, you got some fire in ya. I like that.” He chuckled darkly, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. "Get ready, lads! We’re not done yet!"
The pirates aboard the Bloody Maiden began to retaliate. Cannons fired again, their roar deafening, and this time, the ballistic barrage was aimed directly at the Raven’s Perch. The cannonballs screamed through the air, crashing into the side of Seraphis’s ship, causing splinters and debris to fly.
Seraphis’s barrier flared up, protecting her crew from most of the impact. She felt the heat of the blast, the power of the cannonballs reverberating through the ship, but she remained steadfast.
“Prepare for the boarding!” Cutlass bellowed from across the sea.
The Clash of Steel
With the cannons silenced, Cutlass’s men launched their grappling hooks, which sailed through the air, landing with a loud crash as the ropes tightened. The two ships were now connected. The pirates swung across, landing on Seraphis’s deck with the wild fury of beasts.
“To arms!” Seraphis shouted, her voice commanding. Her crew met them head-on, and the clash of blades rang out as the pirates collided with her men.
Seraphis didn’t waste a moment. She leaped into the fray, daggers flashing in her hands. She was a blur of motion, her barrier still shimmering around her, ensuring that no pirate could strike her down.
“Let’s see how good you really are,” she muttered, her daggers slicing through the air as she dropped into the midst of the enemy.
One pirate lunged at her with a cutlass, but Seraphis was faster. She sidestepped, slamming her dagger into his side, twisting as he fell to the ground. A second pirate swung a battleaxe, but she parried with the flat of her blade, pushing the axe away before delivering a quick slash to his throat.
“Not bad at all,” she said, her eyes gleaming. “But I’m just getting started.”
Cutlass Makes His Move
Across the deck, Captain Cutlass stepped forward, drawing his curved blade. His crew had made their initial assault, but now he was ready for the next phase. The pirates surrounding him seemed to part, giving him a clear line of sight to Seraphis.
Seraphis saw him immediately.
He was coming for her.
With a battle cry, Cutlass charged. His sword moved with the deadly precision of a seasoned fighter.
But Seraphis was ready. Her mana surged, and in a flash, she moved to intercept. “Your move,” she murmured, raising her daggers.
As their swords clashed, a shockwave of power echoed through the deck. The storm overhead raged, but the two warriors were locked in a deadly dance of blades, neither one willing to give an inch.
Cutlass grinned. "I like ya, Seraphis. Ya got spirit. Let’s see how much more ya got!"
What do you think?
