Chapter 636: Operation Polar Winds : Part Forty-One
Although the majority of the spell-hexes dispersed across Jormunal's body only served to maintain her alive and kicking, she had still found time and space to add hexes if different purposes, the moment the dark bolt of lightning fell from above, it should have impacted her right atop the head, but like some sort lightning poles, her antlers attracted it all and fell off before it could course into the skull and then the rest of her body.
As Alkayne approached at a speed that was unlike anything he had shown before, he could see the antlers growing back already, Jormunal was already on the move to avoid any more lightning bolts and indeed, even with the zombie lunging for her, another one came crashing from above.
A hex lit on each of her thighs, their arcane radiance peering through the clothing, and she successfully moved out of the way at sufficient speed to not get caught by the bolt, arching her spine back, she also dodged the minor lord's slash, allowing herself slide upon the ice, bits of frost and crackling necrotic lightning landed on the front of her cloth in the process.
For a moment, they both stood still, soldiers of the dead and lifeless golems fighting without reprieve, filling this place with the constant sound of clashing and fighting, both sides were knocking one another down, ghost wood cracked and snapped, and armour bent and caved.
Jormunal felt a cold sweat tickle her back, it was a good thing that her heartbeat was regulated by a hex, otherwise it would pounding inside of her chest like no tomorrow, she might have looked very calm, composed and cool just there but that was seriously frightening.
Who knew that something could go so freakishly fast out of nowhere? And that halberd swing… She really would rather not get hit by that at all, her flesh was best when stuck together and bones much better when unbroken.
How she felt was impossible to tell due having a deer skull for a head however, baring her claws, a hex lit up upon her palm, causing a fire bolt to erupt forward, the flames were swiftly extinguished by a squall of frigid winds, turning into a flying blade after dealing with the fire, the living once again dodged narrowly.
Alkayne seemed to be gliding around, the cold air currents he manifested were swirling chaotically around him, somewhat obscuring his form, as well as causing the banner wrapped around his halberd and cape of fur to flutter wildly, combined with his speedy and sudden movements, following what he was up to wasn't an easy task.
Jormunal stayed on the move at all time, not having much choice in that regard as a strike of black lightning would periodically come falling from above whilst blades of wind could be fired at any second, the zombie didn't need any particular motion to hurl them out.
Still, she was very proficient at running away, and her sense of danger was acutely trained, managing to dodge every attack launched her way whilst trying to think of a way to actually do something herself, the only reason Jormunal was even here in the first place was because it was pretty obvious that there would be nowhere to hide soon enough, if she wanted to keep on living, the threat had to be dealt with in a much more permanent manner.
So as much as it wracked her nerves, she decided to engage them in combat, Jormunal had hoped to at least get a few when they showed up near the bolt she had placed there, but not only did they ignore the trapped object, but they turtled up and resided all manners of assault, so it only left her this one occasion to deal an actual blow.
This place had been prepared a long time and was finally seeing some usage, upon the walls and down below the ice and water, hexes lit-up, revealing many totems resting at the bottom.
The golems seemed to be bursting with pure strength, her stronger creations finally managing to match with the knights.
The one emulating the Schneebiest was shot in the eye by a powerful bolt, but it alright, it failed to penetrate and harm the bones, her golem was only put out of balance for a few moments, with its newly acquired power and defences, even this moment of weakness wasn't enough for the knight facing it to inflict a debilitating strike.
As for Jormunal herself, she brought her two hands together, a hex lighting up on each of her palms, one red and vibrant, the other green and wavy, the flames and winds melded together as she directed her finger toward Alkayne, a massive burst of fire exploding forward.
'Ouch…' combining hexes like this overloaded the natural resistance she had to the products of the hexes upon her body, the skin on her right hand was singed a little bit.
She did not stop moving however, in fact, that concentrated blast sent her sliding backward, allowing Jormunal to not get hit by yet another strike of lightning, even after so many times, she failed to notice if there could be a way to dodge it without already being in movement, that thing seemed to be locked onto her position at all times.
Even when moving, there had already been a few times during which she almost failed, or failed to dodge properly and needed to use her regrown antlers to take the hit for her.
The burst of flames had risen up much smoke, but it was all quickly blasted away as freezing winds aimed for her life, this time, one split part of the ice that covered, it was only a portion when nothing had been standing, but it was rapidly annihilated, the broken bits sinking to the bottom.
The spectral standard seemed to flicker for a moment and one soldier detached from the ground, and dived into the water, letting themselves be dragged down.
Understanding what was going on, Jormunal wanted to stop that undead or at least order one of her golems to do so, but the corpse militia had strategically taken control of the battlefield to ensure that they blocked the way there.
'They moved like that early-on… I hadn't even revealed the totems below yet!' knowing that this meant that her moves had been predicted in advance and countered before she even made them only fed her stress.
"You- You are very strong" Jormunal couldn't help but compliment, the zombie had come out unscathed from that flaming explosion.
Not waiting nor expecting a response, she activated the hex upon her forehead, and she moved forward.
What do you think?
