Chapter 49: Cute Witch’s Mousy Introductions
I followed that deer diligently on my broom, until we arrived at a city. The guards let us in easily, moving in front of the cervitaur to question her.
“Faelina? I’m surprised you came back today. You could have warned us in advance.”
The person talking was an animal person themselves. They were not even the nekomimi kind, but they were more of the full on animal person, standing on two legs and talking as a cat.
Faelina gestured towards Mary and I floating away from her on my broom. “These two wanted to find a city, so I led them here. They came from the human kingdom over. They’re my friends.”
The cat girl sighed. “Did you find some strange people again? The last thing the lord here needs is more strangeness. There was the frost over in the mountain, and that werewolf came down like he was scared half to death. You know how that lord handles things.”
Faelina giggled. “He is a mousy fellow, after all.”
The cat laughed. “Just don’t go saying that in front of him. And speak of the man.”
As they talked, the mouse had finally made himself known. He walked forward wielding a cane in his hand, and from behind him, a werewolf stood on guard.
“You told me there would be no more surprises,” the mouse said. “Then what is this?”
The werewolf’s eyes widened. “Surely, you don’t think I have anything to do with this, do you?”
“She said they came from the human kingdom. Was that not from under the mountain? And it seems the storm you feared has gone. I guess it’s no longer our problem.”
The mouse walked up towards the two girls hovering on a broom. He tapped the front of it with his two fingers smelling of cheese. “Ah, you must be a renowned mage over there? Are you some kind of traveler sent by their king? Need help with some sin or whatever? But I’ll tell you already, you’re not getting it.”
I shrugged my shoulders. “I don’t need any help with anything in particular. Not unless there is some kind of role to be filled. In that case, I will take all of the help I can get. Are you a director?”
The mouse’s nose twitched. “A director? I guess you could call me that. I direct the people of this city. Except for Faelina. She’s kind of her own bunch.”
Faelina tilted her head. “I’m surprised. Your mood seems to have improved from before. Did something good happen?”
The rat smirked and pointed behind himself at the werewolf. “I got this guy to serve me for the foreseeable future. That and whatever problem caused it was also dealt with. Why would I be in a bad mood?”
“I always thought you were constantly in a bad mood, simply looking for reasons to be angry at people?”
“If that were the case, the Empress would have fired me from this duty a long time ago. That’s the problem with you young ones…”
Faelina stomped her hooves and crossed her arms. “Hmph, I’m older than you. You’re nothing but a brat if we’re going by my years.”
Once more, the mouse wrinkled his nose at the deer woman. “Whatever. Either way, that’s the problem with ignorant people. Y’all don’t understand posturing. Sometimes you have to act like the big boss man.”
I raised my hand into the air. “I understand acting a lot!”
The mouse chuckled and clacked his teeth together. “I’m very glad that someone here understands me. You must be a very intelligent individual to pick up on this. Where are you from?”
I finally found my chance to act once more, and I took it. I lowered my voice by a few octaves, trying to sound like one of those old cowboys, and at the same time, I produced a small piece of wheat to hang out of my mouth. “I reckon I come from all over the place. Ain’t never really settled down no where. They call me by all sorts of names. Not like any of you city folk would understand. I am Eerie von Witchhat as the primary name, don’t you yella bellies forget it!”
Mary tapped on my shoulder and shook her head. She whispered into my ear, “you’re from a city…”
However, the rat folk nodded and clapped, seemingly impressed by my introduction. He was the second animal person I’d fascinated with my introduction skills.
“By the way, I happen to be Lord Cheasewhiskers.” The rat thumped his chest, proud of his own introduction. “I guess your company can come with me to my manor.” He pointed towards the wolf behind him. “Jeri here has been on edge this whole time, so we need some actors to get us in the right state of mind.”
Jeri opened his mouth to protest but stopped himself. “Yes, Lord Cheasewhiskers.”
Faelina nodded. “Well, let’s go already. These two promised to teach me some of their magic.”
The group was led towards the rat’s manor. Jeri had to duck his head just to enter, but it wasn’t so bad for the rest of the people. I was just glad that I could finally reach a ceiling. It made me feel tall, and if I jumped, I could give myself a concussion. Not that I would do that on purpose. I was an actress, not a sports player.
Around the table in the living room, everyone crowded. Jeri had to stand out in the hallway, on the account of his large frame. More rat and mouse people came in, many of them dressed in maid outfits. They sat no small amount of cheese on the table.
The rat’s nose twitched as he grabbed a piece of cheese, setting it inside of his mouth, and chewing with his cute little teeth. “It’s been a while since our town has seen guests such as yourselves. So tell me, why do you come over the mountain? Is it really for something as simple as acting? Does it have anything to do with the sins?”
What do you think?
