Chapter 39
Oseld Gefen.
Born in a rural territory, he showed exceptional talent in swordsmanship from an early age.
Coming from an extremely poor, utterly ordinary family, they couldn’t afford to provide him with sword training.
Nevertheless, by the time he turned 15,
There was no one in the territory who could match him with a sword.
This included even the lord’s knights.
Rumors about Oseld Gefen spread quickly.
It made for good gossip that a commoner with nothing had defeated the lord’s knight.
Soon after, a renowned knight came looking for Oseld.
“Will you become my apprentice?”“Are you strong, sir?”
“Would you like to test me?”
“Yes.”
The knight was truly strong.
So strong that even giving it his all, Oseld couldn’t graze a single hair.
Oseld decided to become his apprentice.
Time passed, and when he turned 20,
Oseld killed the knight he had served.
And in front of the dead knight’s corpse, he said,
“Now you’re weaker than me, aren’t you?”
Naturally, Oseld was caught in the act.
The punishment was death.
One day, while waiting for his death in the underground prison,
Salvation came without warning.
“Do you believe in God?”
An old man wearing an ornate crown came and abruptly asked if he believed in God.
“If I believe, will you spare me?”
“Hahaha. Salvation is open to everyone.”
From then on, Oseld became the hidden hound of the Holy Empire of Gatren.
Moving only on the Pope’s orders, he handled all sorts of dirty work.
But Oseld was satisfied.
Because he could fight plenty of strong opponents.
Because he could kill plenty of weak ones.
That was enough for him.
During this time, his talent, as if gifted by the devil, continued to develop.
He defeated renowned strong fighters from each region one by one.
Finally, he succeeded in killing even a knight who was called a hero in another country.
Recently, Oseld received a new mission.
“Rescue the next Holy Maiden?”
“Yes. It wouldn’t be good if word spread that the next Holy Maiden was kidnapped. I’d like Sir Oseld to rescue her discreetly.”
His first thought was that it was trivial.
Just rescuing a kidnapped future Holy Maiden.
However, when he heard she was imprisoned in the Black Giant Star, his mind changed.
Blood began coursing through his body.
“Sir Oseld. Remember. You must absolutely not fight with (the Monster Eater).”
“Don’t worry.”
Oseld set out confidently.
Over more than ten years of missions, he had continued to develop.
Not just swordsmanship, but he had long mastered various skills like stealth and infiltration.
Sneaking into the Black Giant Star wasn’t too difficult.
Slash!
The worthless demons died without even detecting his presence.
He broke through to his destination like an unstoppable force.
“What are you?”
Finally reaching where the next Holy Maiden was, he was greeted by two muscular demons with bull heads.
Unlike the idiots who had died so far, they emanated quite strong presences.
Normally he would have enjoyed the fight with boiling blood, but unfortunately, fighting wasn’t today’s objective.
Slash!
There was no commotion.
Their heads fell to the ground before they could do anything.
“Phew…”
The target, next Holy Maiden Abelson Mariette, appeared before his eyes.
Oseld swept back his hair while exhaling the breath he had been holding.
“Lady Abelson Mariette. I’ve come to rescue you.”
“Did His Holiness send you?”
“Of course.”
Oseld smirked.
But his face hardened at Abelson’s next words.
“I’m sorry, but I cannot go. Please leave.”
Abelson spoke without even twitching an eyebrow.
A consistently cold demeanor, like an emotionless doll.
Oseld felt something unbearable boiling up inside him.
“Listen here, woman.”
Harsh words naturally flowed from his mouth.
“Despite appearances, I’m someone who came a long way to rescue you, you know? Don’t you think that attitude of yours is problematic?”
“I sincerely apologize to you. However, separate from that, I truly have no intention of returning.”
“Your thoughts don’t matter. I received a mission, and I must complete it.”
Oseld reached out his arm.
Abelson roughly knocked his arm away.
“Are you picking a fight?”
Oseld said in a growling voice.
Abelson continued in a calm voice.
“You must know too. The Monster Eater is somewhere in this place. If you try to take me by force, I’ll release holy power to make her come find us.”
Abelson is the next Holy Maiden.
If she wishes, she can release holy power strong enough to be felt anywhere in the Black Giant Star.
Then the master of this Black Giant Star, Monster Eater Hemis, would come.
“Are you threatening me?”
“Yes, that’s right. So… Kuhak!”
In an instant, moving like lightning, Oseld grabbed Abelson’s collar.
“Insolent wench. If you weren’t the next Holy Maiden, I would have split your body in half.”
“Kkeu-euk…!”
Abelson struggled, but it was futile.
‘The holy power won’t move…’
For some reason, the vast holy power dormant in her body wouldn’t budge an inch.
“Take a nap. When you wake up, you’ll be in the capital.”
At that moment when Oseld was speaking.
“Ms. Abelson! Are you alright…?”
Choi Hyun-seok burst in as the door swung open.
***
Oseld carefully examined Choi Hyun-seok who had appeared.
‘He seems human, but what exactly is he?’
He thought the man gave off a strange aura.
‘Black hair. He must be either a demon or a hero.’
There are only two types of beings in the world with black hair.
Demons
Or heroes.
Demons are visibly different from humans in appearance.
Therefore, the man before him must be a hero.
‘For some reason, I can sense demon energy from him.’
But demon energy could also be felt from the man before him.
Though very faint, demon energy definitely existed within the man.
‘Interesting fellow.’
Just as Oseld smirked,
“Get your hands off her, you bastard!”
The black-haired hero, Choi Hyun-seok, began charging forward.
Oseld quickly struck the Holy Maiden’s nape to knock her unconscious, then dodged.
‘His movements are better than expected.’
Though he hadn’t expected much due to the negligible magical power,
Choi Hyun-seok’s movements far exceeded Oseld’s expectations.
Of course, he didn’t feel the slightest hint that he might lose.
After all, no one would feel threatened just because an ant on the street moved faster than expected.
But it was enough to pique Oseld’s interest.
“You’ll have to come along too.”
He decided to take Choi Hyun-seok along with the Holy Maiden.
“Don’t screw with me!”
Choi Hyun-seok swung his fist.
It contained quite strong magical power.
Oseld could have dodged, but he didn’t.
It might cause a commotion.
He extended his arm to block the punch.
Crunch…!
Choi Hyun-seok’s fist was crushed in Oseld’s grip.
“Shh. We mustn’t cause a disturbance.”
Instead of answering, Choi Hyun-seok threw a low kick.
It was a completely unexpected attack method.
Crack!
Oseld’s brow furrowed as he took the low kick.
“Haa, you two are really being annoying together.”
He throws a light punch.
Soon his fist connects with Choi Hyun-seok’s abdomen and.
“Kuhak!”
Choi Hyun-seok spat out blood and lost consciousness.
‘Hmm? Did I kill him?’
Perhaps he failed to control his strength in a moment of anger.
Oseld placed his hand on Choi Hyun-seok’s limp neck.
‘He’s still alive.’
Fortunately, he didn’t seem to be dead.
There was still a pulse.
‘Then shall I complete the mission.’
Just as Oseld was about to carry the unconscious Abelson and Choi Hyun-seok,
“What might you be doing?”
A terribly beautiful voice rang out.
Oseld froze with his eyes wide open.
‘I didn’t sense any presence at all.’
He hadn’t sensed any presence until they approached right behind him.
Oseld hid his surprise and turned around slowly.
What appeared before his eyes was a woman with white skin and curved figure.
Instead of eyes, nose, and mouth, her face was filled only with red lips.
“Monster Eater Hemis.”
“Oh my, you know me?”
“How could I not know the demon who’s second most famous after the Demon King on the continent.”
Hemis covered her mouth and laughed at Oseld’s words.
Of course, her pretty hand couldn’t even cover half of her enormous lips.
“Ohoho! I didn’t know I was that famous. But if possible, would you call me Gourmand rather than a Monster Eater?”
Hemis joked with a laugh.
Oseld remained frozen.
His mind was racing.
‘Can I win?’
The Pope had absolutely forbidden fighting with the Monster Eater.
Oseld had scoffed, but now facing the Monster Eater directly, he understood why the Pope had insisted so strongly.
‘I can’t sense any demon energy.’
Despite being right in front of him, he couldn’t sense anything from Hemis.
This was not a good sign.
It meant the gap between them was that severe.
‘But battles aren’t just about the amount of magic or demon energy.’
Oseld hadn’t always won because he was stronger.
He became stronger because he won.
He had countless victories against those stronger than him.
Oseld gripped his sword tightly.
Blood raced madly through his entire body with each heartbeat.
‘How strong is she?’
Over 500 years had passed since demons first appeared on the continent.
During that time, countless demons had appeared and disappeared.
But two demons were exceptions.
The Demon King and Hemis.
They continued to maintain their positions like great mountains.
‘The Demon King rarely shows himself directly. But the Monster Eater is different.’
Unlike the Demon King who almost never appeared officially, Hemis showed herself relatively frequently.
Though only once every few decades.
She had appeared not too infrequently in human history.
But every time she appeared, her actions were all unbelievable.
‘They say her enormous mouth devoured thousands of soldiers at once.’
‘Even renowned heroes of the continent were mere meals before the Monster Eater…’
Since her last appearance was roughly a hundred years ago, these incidents are now passed down like legends.
But they were definitely real history.
After all, the subject of those legends was right before him now.
“What are you thinking so deeply about?”
Hemis tilted her head 45 degrees.
Snapped from his thoughts by her voice, Oseld grinned.
“I was thinking about how strong I’d become if I kill you.”
“Ohohohohohoho!”
Hemis started laughing loudly.
Simultaneously, the demon energy she had been concealing spread in all directions.
Whoosh!
Oseld was shocked.
‘This is insane. Is she even a living being?’
She wasn’t intentionally releasing demon energy.
Just naturally loosening what she had bound was enough to make the air vibrate with demon energy.
‘I must end this in one strike.’
Hemis’s demon energy far transcended what he had expected.
A head-on battle was impossible.
Oseld tried to charge first.
But Hemis was one step faster.
“How interesting. Shall we test your skills then?”
Rip!
Hemis’s lips split vertically, and tentacles with small lips sprouted from within.
‘This monster…!’
Oseld tried to dodge without panicking but.
‘Kugh!?’
Oseld’s face contorted.
His thigh suddenly lost strength.
It was where Choi Hyun-seok’s low kick had hit.
‘Why…!?’
Oseld couldn’t understand.
The gap between him and Choi Hyun-seok was immense.
Though he had allowed the attack due to carelessness, he thought he had perfectly blocked it by instantly surrounding himself with magical power.
Yet at this crucial moment, it became his downfall.
‘Damn it!’
What Oseld missed was less than a second, just a fleeting moment.
However, the price for that brief time was far too heavy.
Crack!
Everything below Oseld’s left elbow cleanly vanished as if nothing had ever been there.
Splash!
Red blood sprayed everywhere from the severed surface.
Hemis laughed as she was drenched in that blood.
“It’s been a while since I’ve tasted human blood.”
Oseld gave up.
‘The mission is a failure.’
Let alone escaping with the Holy Maiden, it was questionable whether he could even preserve his own life.
Oseld took out a scroll from his chest and put it in his mouth.
It was a scroll containing the highest-level holy magic, prepared for emergencies.
“Oh my? Trying to escape? Without playing a bit more?”
Instead of answering, Oseld tore the scroll.
Whoosh!
Light so bright it was impossible to open one’s eyes spread in all directions.
A powerful light that burns away demon energy from its source.
Holy power so intense that ordinary demons or magical beasts would melt just from contact.
“This energy feels disgusting no matter when I feel it…”
Even exposed to such light, Hemis merely frowned for a moment.
“Oh my? He’s gone?”
In the blink of an eye, Oseld had disappeared.
“Hmm~ His escape skills are quite good.”
It wasn’t particularly problematic that Oseld escaped.
She had half-intentionally let him go anyway.
If she had truly wanted to, she had several chances to kill Oseld.
“By the way… Are these Reidrun’s subordinates?”
Hemis looked at the bull-head corpses of Reidrun’s subordinates on the floor.
“Reidrun will be sad.”
The corpses and blood floated up and merged together with grotesque noises.
Crunch!
Hemis, licking her lips, devoured them in one go.
“Mmm! Delicious.”
She smiled with satisfaction.
“Thanks to the excellent bait, such fun things happen. Ohoho!”
The bait referred to Abelson Mariette.
“A quite decent one got caught from the start.”
The man who just escaped was at least hero-level among humans.
Not someone commonly seen.
“I wonder who will come next?”
The card of the next Holy Maiden.
It was an exciting day looking forward to what humans would bring to reclaim it.
“And Choi Hyun-seok…”
Hemis looked at Choi Hyun-seok.
“Your grilled meat was delicious too.”
The fact that Choi Hyun-seok could cook was completely unexpected.
And the meat he grilled exceeded expectations in taste.
“Looking forward to more!”
After speaking to the unconscious Choi Hyun-seok, she returned straight to her office.
The smile never left her mouth even as she walked back.
“These days are so fun I might go crazy. Ohohoho!”
Hemis was thoroughly enjoying her happy days in many ways.
