“Eh?” Zack and everyone present were left puzzled.

Not only had Zack just obtained a magical class like his companion, but it was also the regular version of the class.

When the archmage explained Austin’s class, he also briefly explained the mage class. The mage class is the most basic of magical classes and, like the other normal tier 1 classes, it is the origin of all the others.

Any class whose main function is to use magical powers has its origin in the mage class. And, like all other classes, obtaining a magical class does not mean that you know how to use magic. Just as someone who obtains the swordsman class does not have to know how to use a sword. Whether it is a magical class or any other class, rigorous training is required to unlock all the potential one has.

That’s right, potential.

Normally everyone starts with a tier 1 class. The class someone has reflects the potential they possess.Anyone can wield a sword, but only a person with the swordsman class (or a higher-tier class) can use it to its full potential.

Similarly, magical classes are the only ones that can sense and use mana to perform magic. Other classes will not be able to use magic, even if they try for years. There are exceptions, of course, but they are the minority.

Seeing Zack’s class, the fire mage instantly became excited.

Even if it took five years to level up the class, it was still much better than those who had obtained a tier 1 class. With a bit of effort, he would soon catch up with his fellow students.

“Ohhh,” the elderly man said, surprised.

“A title. We don’t see many of these.”

“Title?”

The elderly mage didn’t change his expression upon seeing the previous class. Unlike the nobles, he wasn’t particularly interested in the heroes. He had only agreed to finish the ceremony to see if there was any surprise. Apparently, it hadn’t been in vain.

“A title is a representation of an achievement that few people can accomplish. Don’t be deceived by its seemingly insulting description. All titles bring benefits that will help their bearer.

“For example, the title ‘Combat Maniac’ helps maintain an optimal state for fighting even if you're severely injured and increases combat efficiency. Anyone can earn a title; they’re uncommon, but they’re nothing that hasn’t been seen before,” said the archmage while looking carefully at Zack.

Titles are not easy to earn. As a mage and leader of the magic council, he himself possesses several titles. It’s precisely because of this that he knows how difficult they are to acquire. They are symbols of prestige among people. If that weren’t the case, anyone could have a title.

The title Zack possesses, the archmage has it too, which is why he was so surprised.

(If I’m not mistaken, the requirement to acquire this title was to read a thousand books. How is it possible that someone so young could have it?)

Books are not easy to come by; each one is precious, and their owners won’t share them easily. Even if one had an easy way to acquire books, reading such a quantity is something no one could do at Zack’s age.

(Has he spent his life reading books?) thought the archmage.

The elderly man looked at his own class and thought that he was truly qualified for it.

A mage needs to have a vast amount of knowledge before casting even their first spell.

As already explained, having the mage class does not mean knowing how to cast even the simplest spell.

Anyone who can’t endure hours and hours of memorizing knowledge isn’t qualified to be a true mage.

“How do you know what a title does?” asked Zack, pulling the archmage out of his thoughts.

“Just concentrate on the title and you’ll know.”

Zack did that, concentrating on the title, and something else appeared, different from the status screen.

Bookworm

A title obtained by those who value knowledge and enjoy acquiring it.

You will find it easier to read books.

You will find it easier to understand the essence of the books you have read.

You will not easily forget the books you have read.

Seeing this title again, the archmage remembered his youth, locked away in his family’s library while his brothers were out training with swords or doing things unbecoming of a noble.

His family was a noble family that had produced many generals who supported the kingdom’s conquests and fought on the demon frontier.

Everyone had hopes that his brothers would join the army, earn merits, and bring back the glory the family name once had.

In the end, glory did return to his house, but not thanks to his brothers. It was the young man who locked himself in his room reading through the night with a candle until the sun came up who made his family important again.

However, by that time, his family had lost its prominence, and the search for the magical path had become the only important thing to him.

It was undeniable that the possession of the title made Zack remind him of his younger self.

Suddenly, the archmage sighed. No matter how qualified one is, a tier 1 class is just that. Even if one survives the war, their destiny will likely be to reach tier 2 at most.

(I don’t think the king will send them directly to fight, but the time he gives them certainly won’t be enough to improve their classes, not even for the fire mage.)

The old man felt pity for these two young magic users, but there was nothing he could do.

The archmage shifted his gaze from Zack to the last person who still had no class. Seeing where the archmage was looking, the others in the room turned their gaze toward him. Ronald hadn’t said a word since he was summoned, only looking around with a blank expression. He was clearly processing the information from the archmage, or maybe he was still in shock from what had happened.

“When will you stop staring?” asked the old man, somewhat annoyed at having to wait.

“Eh? What?” said Ronald, startled.

“Come here,” the archmage ordered. “Unless you’re not interested in knowing your class.”

Ronald suddenly moved. He approached the crystal orb, waiting for it to glow as much as possible.

Meanwhile, Zack was thinking about something the archmage had said.

(He said the crystal orb lets us know what our class is. That means we already had our classes before touching the orb.

Did we have our classes before arriving in this world? No, otherwise, we would have classes related to what we do every day.

So that means we received our classes when we were summoned. How? And based on what criteria?)

Countless questions filled Zack’s mind, and yet he seemed to be the only one concerned about finding answers.

“Status.” Ronald’s voice woke Zack up again, and he focused on the class Ronald had received.

“A tier 2 class,” when the archmage spoke, Ronald sighed in relief.

“The Smith class is a tier 2 class, somewhat different from other crafting classes,” the elderly man continued. “Unlike other classes like blacksmith or whitesmith, this class allows you to do everything those classes can do. It’s an inclusive class for everything related to smithing. In a way, it’s like the direct advancement from the craftsman class. It’s a rare class.”

Ronald sighed in relief. Not only was his class a tier 2 class, but since it wasn’t a combat class, it was most likely he wouldn’t have to fight.

“Now that we’re all here, let’s head to the banquet,” said the archmage, handing the orb to one of the guards.

Without further delay, the archmage walked toward the others who had been left behind and were still talking from where they were.

Watching the back of the archmage, Zack had a somber look on his face.

Ronald may have been relieved, but Zack’s worries, and those of the others who had tier 1 classes, had just begun.
