Chapter 10: Austin
Airi and Ronald
Airi's family owns one of the largest glass manufacturing factories in the country. While they aren’t as prominent as the Big Five, she leads a small group of girls whose families collaborate in business. Even so, she doesn't particularly stand out.
As for Ronald…
Sigh, Zack sighed, thinking about what had happened to his family. They hadn’t been very important to begin with, but what came afterward...
Zack shook those thoughts out of his head and approached them.
Hearing Zack's idea, Austin was thrilled. If he could join the other Tier 2 students, he might impress a professor who could teach him, allowing him to reach Tier 2 without much trouble.
Seeing Austin’s expression, Zack knew he’d convinced him. Not that Austin tried to hide it—he had always been a relatively straightforward person.
In high society, everyone knows everyone. In fact, Zack is able to recall the names of the six hundred students at his school. It’s a basic and necessary skill in that world, since you need to know whom you can and cannot offend.
Although Zack isn’t particularly close to any of his classmates, he maintains a neutral relationship with most of them.
Austin Ramirez is an exchange student from the United States.
Austin is the grandson of Mexican immigrants who fled to the U.S. seeking a better life. His grandfather was an honest and hardworking man who wanted nothing more than a better future for his wife and future son. Still, life was not easy.
As an undocumented immigrant trying to start over, his job options were... limited.
Low-paying jobs with humiliatingly long hours in poor working conditions quickly deteriorated Austin’s grandfather’s health. Even so, he always supported his family in every way he could.
Austin’s grandfather was always present at important events and supported his son in all his decisions, even if they weren’t the best. From an early age, Austin’s father was encouraged to try new things and persevere through tough times.
All that effort paid off, and when Austin’s father was twelve, his school noticed his talent for American football. When they gave the family the news, Austin’s grandfather was thrilled. He learned everything about football and provided his son with everything he needed to improve.
One could say fortune smiled upon them, and for a few years, things went well.
Unfortunately, the grandfather’s grueling lifestyle caused him to pass away at thirty-five, leaving behind a widowed mother and a fifteen-year-old son with few options. Austin’s grandmother had to take on two jobs to pay the household bills, yet even that wasn’t enough to cover all their expenses.
Fortunately, Austin’s father’s talent was already attracting the attention of scouts. Scholarships, training equipment, instructors—more help came as his skills improved. Seven years later, Austin’s father became one of the top football players in the country.
Thanks to his remarkable talent, the family rose from poverty to become multimillionaires.
Unfortunately, Austin lacks the qualities that helped his family succeed.
The main reason wealthy, influential families send their children to prestigious foreign schools as exchange students is that, for one reason or another, they can’t study in schools in their home country.
Zack decided to push those thoughts aside and move forward with his plan.
It was relatively simple, and after hearing it, Austin was quick to get on board. Zack would convince Airi, while Austin would try to sway Ronald.
Just as Airi was heading toward one of the servants, Zack stepped in front of her.
“What do you want?” Airi asked in an irritated tone. Zack understood why; anyone would be upset after what had happened.
“Can we talk for a moment?”
“Mmm. I see,” Airi said thoughtfully after hearing Zack’s explanation.
Then she raised her eyes to meet Zack’s and, with a bright smile, said, “Don’t worry, I won’t say anything about your classes. It’s the least I can do for you. After all, no one chooses the class they’ll get.”
“Thanks,” Zack said without much emotion.
If anyone else were in his position, they might consider Airi an angel sent from heaven, but Zack knew the real reason she agreed to help them.
No one here is foolish. Both had received the best education possible from a young age and knew when something was to their advantage and when it wasn’t. If there’s one thing they’ve learned, it’s that nothing in life comes for free.
Reporting Zack and Austin wouldn’t benefit Airi at all.
Seeing the attitude of the king, who was only interested in Yamato, the chances of a reward were slim. If she told the guards the truth and they took Zack and Austin away, her classmates might seize the opportunity to isolate her and sideline her from important group decisions.
On the other hand, helping Zack and Austin could be seen as an investment. They were among the few who had obtained a magical class, which meant they should be capable of accomplishing what others couldn’t.
If there’s one thing she’s realized, it’s that three people are more important than the rest: the king, ruler of the kingdom; the pontiff, a member of a seemingly significant religious order; and the archmage. A magical class, no matter its tier, must bring considerable benefits.
Even if her investment didn’t pay off and they were caught, Airi could always claim she hadn’t known they were receiving Tier 2 class training or that she had gone straight to the banquet without paying attention after receiving her class.
Between receiving a pat on the back and earning a debt of gratitude, the latter was clearly more worthwhile.
“Please let us know if you need our help with anything,” Zack said almost servilely.
Even so, Zack had to respectfully thank Airi for her help. She had nothing to lose, but he did. If, for some reason, Airi became upset with them and reported them, it could severely reduce their chances of surviving on the battlefield.
For Airi, it was just a small favor, but for Zack, it was a matter of life and death.
After thanking her again, Zack bid her farewell and headed toward Ronald, whom Austin was trying to convince. But...
“Sorry, I can’t do what you’re asking.”
… Ronald had no intention of helping them.
