Chapter 283
Chapter 283
Self-Defense Officer, Jia Kuro
Self-Defense Officer Jia Kuro was at the peak of exhaustion.
He had lost count of how many times they repelled the monsters. Staggering, he climbed into the passenger seat of a Type 73 small truck, wetting his throat with an unidentified half-finished coffee, and exhaled deeply.
"Haaaaah..."
It's tough...
His heart raced, dizziness clouded his vision, and no matter how long he waited, his breathing would not settle.
Even Jia, who had sworn never to complain since choosing this job, found the current situation almost unbearable.
Jia and his team transported supplies to a high school that had become an evacuation center.
However, the additional supplies they were expecting never arrived, no matter how long they waited. Despite repeated confirmation requests, they were told only to keep waiting. Forced to ration their unit's provisions among the evacuees, Jia, and the other self-defense officers endured with empty stomachs.
Then came a notice: "Due to a shortage of supplies, future deliveries may cease. Therefore, all personnel must engage in a full-scale offensive to overcome the situation." The order seemed straight out of the old Japanese military's command center. This absurdity prompted Jia to question the sanity of his superiors.
Upon discovering it was issued by the Minister of Defense, Jia clutched his head. It was clear this was a directive from the Cabinet or possibly the Prime Minister.
...
Where am I now...?
How long has it been since I last slept...? Five days, or is it six...?
His fragmented memories left him unsure of his location.
Trying to ward off fatigue, Jia reached for a stimulant in his pocket, but before he could even take it, exhaustion overtook him, and he fell unconscious...
...
The day dungeons first appeared on Earth sent shockwaves through the Self-Defense Forces.
The forces were soon mobilized to investigate the mysterious labyrinths appearing on Japanese soil. Within, they found monstrous creatures.
The government ordered the forces to assess whether these dungeons could be eradicated. Jia was assigned to a dungeon infiltration team.
The team was divided into an attack unit engaging monsters head-on and a support unit handling supplies and backup.
During one mission, the attack unit cleared out a large concentration of monsters, but suddenly, numerous monsters surrounded Jia and the support unit. Without hesitation, Jia fought back, successfully eliminating them.
But then, something unprecedented occurred—Jia inexplicably gained a skill.
He immediately reported the anomaly after noticing the change and confirming his status. However, due to the support unit's role in recovering monster drops, suspicions arose that Jia had stolen a rare item enabling skill acquisition.
Eventually, it was verified that such skills could manifest spontaneously, but at the time, this was unknown, and Jia was removed from the team.
He understood—suspicions were natural.
The support unit collected drops from defeated monsters. Yet, envy and suspicion from others around him continued even after his name was cleared, leading Jia to decline to rejoin the unit. řÀℕóBƐș
Instead, he was reassigned to ground duty, eliminating monsters escaping the dungeons.
Even without his skill, Jia's experience placed him a cut above other officers, often handling troublesome monsters.
Among these creatures were those who nullified physical attacks with special abilities.
Even bullets proved ineffective against such foes, as did ghostly, incorporeal undead.
Yet, using his accidentally obtained skill [Combat Aura], Jia could harm these monsters.
"Jia, wake up! Hey, snap out of it!"
"...Ugh!?"
Jia awoke to a colleague with a soot- and blood-stained face shaking his shoulder through the door.
"Sorry! It's another incorporeal undead. We need you!"
"Ugh... got it."
Adjusting his helmet, Jia charged back to the front line. But as soon as he activated his skill to confront the monster, he blacked out and collapsed.
"GAHHHH––!"
"""Roーーー!?"""
