Chapter 125: 125 Vulnerable Groups
Chen Xu’s scalp tingled as soon as he heard Yang Jinxia’s words.
Isn’t this just stirring up enmity for me?
Sure enough, he immediately perceived the glares from a few old classmates, which seemed as if they were looking at a class enemy.
He quickly tried to clarify, “Don’t listen to her nonsense, actually…” he said but then suddenly felt something was off. How was he supposed to explain this? Should he tell them that he was the one pursuing her?
To claim she was joking, others would definitely not believe it. Which girl would joke about this kind of thing?
If he flatly denied it, it would only make people think he was a jerk.
His relationship with Yang Jinxia seemed to have been solidified all of a sudden.
He was really at a loss for words. At this moment, he felt that men were indeed the weaker sex.
Yang Jinxia was watching him. Mrs. Sui followed his lead and said, “Okay, actually, I was just joking. Please don’t take it to heart.”
“No, no,” the classmates hurriedly said.
Chen Xu believed that it wouldn’t be long before news about him being pursued by a beautiful woman would spread in the class group chat.
However, this feeling wasn’t too bad.
It was incredibly face-saving.
“Hello, hello, everyone.” At that moment, a man who seemed like the wedding host took the microphone to test it, “Welcome to the wedding banquet of the Liu and Zhang families…”
Chen Xu hadn’t attended many weddings. After graduating from college, he had only gone to celebrate Old Tang’s wedding, where not many people were invited – just family members from both sides and colleagues from the company. It was quite simple.
Liu Xiaoshang’s wedding this time was much grander. The venue was decorated with great care, with streamers and balloons everywhere. They even hired a professional wedding host, and there were several cameras capturing the event from every angle.
Chen Xu felt that this must have been demanded by the bride. Although he hadn’t met her in person, her behavior when she conducted a checkup during the last meal with Liu Xiaoshang had left a deep impression on him.
Soon, the bride and groom came on stage.
Chen Xu noticed that the bride’s complexion didn’t look very good, as if she was unhappy. He couldn’t help but sigh for Liu Xiaoshang. If she was showing such a face to her husband at the wedding, life after marriage probably wouldn’t be easy.
After playing a few games on stage and drinking from the bridal cup, the bride and groom stepped down. Then, the bride disappeared, leaving Liu Xiaoshang alone to toast at each table.
Dishes were served one after another.
“What would you like to drink?” Chen Xu asked Yang Jinxia.
On the table were a bottle of baijiu, a bottle of red wine, a bottle of Sprite, coconut juice, orange juice, etc., available for guests to choose from.
She said, “Coconut juice, please.”
Chen Xu picked up the drink, poured a glass for her, and then poured one for himself.
“Hey, you drink this.” Cai Bin poured a glass of baijiu and placed it in front of him, casually taking away the coconut juice glass.
Chen Xu said, “I have to drive later.”
“Let your girlfriend drive then,” another classmate chimed in.
“Or, Xiao Shang can get you a room, and you can stay here for the night.”
“Either way, today you must drink, whether you want to or not.”
Seeing them all looking at him, determined not to stop until he was drunk, Chen Xu’s scalp started to tingle again. Indeed, showing off comes at a price; now, he had incited public outrage.
“My stomach hasn’t been well lately, I really can’t drink,” Chen Xu firmly refused.
He wasn’t lying; he had felt terrible the last time he drank too much. The headache was bearable, but the feeling in his stomach, that nauseous sensation without being able to vomit, lasted for most of the day. He didn’t want to experience it ever again.
“Don’t worry, I’ll have some stomach medicine ready for you in a bit,” Cai Bin continued.
“What’s going on?” At this moment, the groom noticed the commotion and came over.
“Everyone is urging Chen Xu to drink, but he just won’t,” someone explained.
Upon hearing this, Liu Xiaoshang couldn’t let it slide, especially seeing Yang Jinxia sitting next to him. He walked over, took a glass, filled it, and handed it to him, saying, “Today is my big day, you have to drink a glass.”
Speaking, he took a glass of wine from his companion beside him, saying, “I’ll chug this one first.” He tilted his head back and gulped it down, then flipped the glass upside down to show it was empty.
Chen Xu saw everyone looking at him. He truly despised this kind of drinking culture. In that moment, he felt caught between a rock and a hard place, not knowing whether to drink or not.
Just then, Yang Jinxia reached out to take the glass from his hand and said, “I’ll drink for him.”
“Alright,” the onlookers who enjoyed the spectacle cheered.
Chen Xu saw her bring the glass to her lips, grabbed her hand, took the glass back, and drank it all in one go. After swallowing, a burst of warmth surged up, hitting him in the nose and causing a bit of discomfort.
“Now that’s more like it, another one.” Liu Xiaoshang poured him another glass.
This time, Chen Xu took it and drank it without hesitation. He knew that these guys wouldn’t give up until they had him completely drunk today.
Fortunately, Liu Xiaoshang didn’t go too far, and after toasting everyone with another drink, he left.
After downing three glasses, Chen Xu felt sick to his stomach and quickly sat down, shoving several bites of food into his mouth to suppress the alcohol’s effect.
Right then, a pot of chicken soup was served. Yang Jinxia stood up, scooped a bowl for him, and placed it in front of him, saying, “Have some soup, it’ll make you feel better.”
After drinking, everyone’s spirits were high, and the atmosphere at the table grew warmer. The only female classmate at the table asked Yang Jinxia, “By the way, how did you two meet?”
Yang Jinxia picked up a piece of fish, placed it in her bowl, and upon hearing the question, replied, “It was about two and a half months ago, just after I transferred here and was staying in a hotel. One afternoon, I went out shopping and just got out of the car. He came over to strike up a conversation, and that’s how we met.”
Just like that?
The six guys at the table were dumbfounded, mouths agape as they looked at Chen Xu. They couldn’t believe that a simple chat-up had sealed the deal. It seemed too implausible.
“So, was it love at first sight?” the female classmate asked incredulously, glancing at Chen Xu. His face was somewhat flushed from drinking, making it hard to believe he could possess such charm.
“Actually, guys hit on me all the time, and I never pay them any attention,” Yang Jinxia said, while deftly removing bones from her fish and dipping the flesh in soy sauce with shredded ginger, then placing it into Chen Xu’s bowl.
Her gesture was so natural that the men watching were captivated.
“But for some reason, he made a very special impression on me, like someone I had known for a long time. When I got back to the hotel, we bumped into each other again. Right then, I felt that we really had fate on our side.”
After listening, Cai Bin muttered to himself, “Why did I have to come to this wedding banquet? It wasn’t enough to be tormented by the groom once; now I have to endure it again with you two.”
“Come on, let’s have a drink,” someone lifted their glass.
The female classmate’s boyfriend stood up, filled a glass for Chen Xu, and said, “No more words needed, let’s drink.”
Chen Xu, outing his all into it, grabbed the drink without further ado and downed it.
A few classmates took turns toasting with him, and Chen Xu got swept up in the excitement, accepting drinks from all comers. By the end, he didn’t even know how much he had drunk until he could drink no more and slumped over the table, dazed.
If it hadn’t been for Yang Jinxia at his side, he would have slid under the table.
Meanwhile, his other classmates had already passed out.
By that time, the banquet was nearly over. Yang Jinxia happened to see the official in charge and waved him over to help keep an eye on Chen Xu. Then, she went to bring the car around, reclined the seats, and managed to get Chen Xu into the car and made him comfortable.
“Thank you,” Yang Jinxia said, after all the fuss.
“Don’t mention it,” Liu Xiaoshang was going around toasting the guests and had lost count of how many drinks he had, yet he was still in high spirits, showing no sign of drunkenness.
As if asking casually, she inquired, “By the way, Chen Xu mentioned that you saw me when you two had dinner together last time?”
“Yeah, he even told you about that, huh?”
“When was that?”
“Uh, three months ago, I suppose.”
“Where was it?”
“At XX Plaza over there.”
A flicker passed through Yang Jinxia’s eyes as she said, “Well, that’s that, I’m taking him home.”
“Alright then, find a chance to have Chen Xu take you out to eat with us,” suggested Liu Xiaoshang.
“Sure, see you.”
What do you think?
