Chapter 174: Attack on the Mutant Academy
Chapter 174 - Attack on the Mutant Academy
"You're all security personnel from LexCorp, right? I heard you've been undergoing military training in the basement ever since you joined. Is that true?"
Inside the stealth aircraft, William turned to the LexCorp security team seated beside him as he spoke.
Technically, they were called security. But the armor and weapons strapped to their bodies could put many front-line U.S. soldiers to shame.
"Mr. Stryker, if you're trying to give us a pre-battle pep talk, I'd suggest saving your breath."
Before William could say more, one of the guards, his face marked by a prominent scar, cut in with a calm, almost amused smile.
"Ask anyone here. Which one of us hasn't crawled out of a war zone? We've all seen our friends die beside us. We've all had bombs explode just feet from our heads. Motivational speeches don't mean much. From the moment we joined LexCorp, we were prepared to die."
His words drew laughter and nods of agreement from the rest of the squad.
"That's right, Mr. Stryker. We don't need warm words. If it's about determination, I'd say our drive to complete the mission is just as strong as yours."
"And honestly," another chimed in, "today's American soldiers are worthless. If you want real strength, you look at us."
Their voices were full of confidence. William gave a slight nod, the corners of his lips curling into a faint smile.
"In that case, I won't waste time. Just remember: this mission isn't just about my personal war against mutants. It's part of LexCorp's plan. I expect every one of you to give it your all."
"For LexCorp!"
The team responded in unison, voices echoing within the aircraft.
William kept smiling, but there was a stiffness to it he couldn't hide.
It made sense that these men, trained under strict conditions from their joining, were so full of confidence. And the advanced equipment LexCorp had given them stood in stark contrast to what they had used during their military careers.
What William hadn't expected, though, was just how loyal these men were to LexCorp. Their devotion was almost shocking.
Most of them were former soldiers from different countries. Some had even been mercenaries hired directly by the company. William had heard rumors that LexCorp treated its recruits very well, but this level of loyalty? It was likely more than what they'd shown to their own national armies.
That was the part he couldn't fully understand.
Still, he quickly pushed the thought aside. There was no point dwelling on it now. If it were before, before he knew the truth, he would have been on high alert. As a U.S. Army colonel, he would have kept a close eye on LexCorp, wary of the threat they could pose once they built up too much power.
But now, everything had changed. All that was left in his life was revenge. Nothing else mattered anymore.
Before long, the aircraft arrived above Xavier's School. William and the LexCorp security unit looked down through the open bay doors. Below, young mutant children played on the lawn, unaware of what was coming.
William stood, his tone shifting to cold steel.
"I'll say this one last time." he began, addressing the group around him.
"I don't need any survivors. This operation is fully authorized by the President of the United States. Everyone down there, regardless of age or ability, is an extremely dangerous terrorist. You don't want to be killed by one of these freaks and their strange powers, and neither do I. So don't hesitate. Attack with absolute decisiveness!"
He made it clear: he wanted the security team to kill the children playing below without mercy.
And yet, not a single guard objected. Every one of them accepted the order as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
"Good. Begin the operation!"
With that command, a wave of security personnel jumped directly from the aircraft.
There were no parachutes. The height was more than enough to injure a normal person, but the lightweight exoskeleton suits they wore allowed them to land steadily on the ground.
"Hey! Who are they?"
Some of the mutant children on the lawn noticed the people dropping from the sky.
A boy with gills on his neck barely had time to speak before his head was blown apart by a single, clean shot.
Massacre. Cleansing. No matter the term, the mission had officially started.
...
Inside the academy, in one of the classrooms, Jean was teaching—or pretending to.
Her mind was elsewhere.
She could no longer sense Rogue's brainwaves. And yet, these students kept bothering her, clinging to her with their endless questions, disrupting her thoughts.
She wanted to kill them right there to get them out of the way, but she was worried that being too aggressive might throw the plan into chaos.
If Charles went all out, he could still pose a real threat.
As she endured the incessant questions from the students, the classroom door was suddenly kicked open by one of the LexCorp security guards.
In the same instant, several energy rifles fired off beams of red laser, wiping out the entire room of students.
"No! Something's not right. There's a powerful mutant here!"
But as their guns overheated, the security team was shocked to see that Jean, still standing at the podium, remained completely unharmed. Her expression was cold as she stared them down.
"Requesting backup, requesting—"
Before the lead guard could finish speaking, his body was lifted into the air by an invisible force. Jean calmly walked toward him, step by step.
"Do you know Reid? Reid Pennyworth."
The soldier struggled, unable to speak, only managing a shaky nod.
Jean tilted her head slightly. "I see. So he's started moving too? Well then, since you helped me take care of these annoying brats, I won't kill you. But you'd better not try to attack me again."
With that, she walked out of the classroom, leaving the guard to drop from the air and hit the ground hard once she was far enough away.
He slowly got back on his feet, eyes filled with caution as he looked in the direction she left.
"Target confirmed. High-threat mutant: Jean Grey. Switching to surveillance mode."
...
Meanwhile, William and his two-man team reached Charles's office. Inside, they quickly gathered several important files on the academy and located the elevator that led down to the basement.
"Found it." William muttered, a strange smile tugging at his lips as he touched the vial hidden inside his coat.
It contained fluid extracted from the cerebral cortex of Jason. After multiple rounds of refinement, the mutant's brain had been left shriveled and completely inactive.
But the results were worth it. Even someone like Charles, once injected with this substance, would fall under his control.
The mutant leader had once used Cerebro to search the entire world for mutants to join his cause. That was the moment his life began to fall apart.
This time, William was going to make sure Charles killed all his allies with his own hands.
