Chapter 1410: Relatives From The Capital ( 3 )
"This child! How can you be so rude to your aunt and cousins? Apologize to them!" Chen Gang scolded angrily.
No matter what, these boys were still the Chen family's grandsons, with his late brother's blood flowing in their veins.
Even if the bones were broken, the tendons were still connected. As a family, he still had the responsibility to look after his late brother's wife and sons.
Feeling the pain on the back of his head, Chen Jianmin rubbed it and said, "Father, do you think I said something wrong?"
"You are just a child. What do you know about your uncle's matters? What happened with your eldest uncle's family is not something you could—or should—judge. Now, apologize!" Chen Gang said while glaring at him.
After a moment, Chen Jianmin finally sighed and said, "Aunt, Cousins, it was rude of me to say those words to you. I apologize to you."
With his head lowered, no one saw the flicker of amusement flashing in his eyes. He didn't know the personalities of these cousins and aunt yet, so it was better to show them reckless and childish behavior.
That way, they wouldn't take him seriously and would lower their guard. It would be easier for him to find out what their goals were for coming here.
It's just that he never expected these two boys to be so polite that they couldn't even refute his rude words. He didn't know if he should praise them for being well-mannered or weak.
Wei Zhiying was stunned by how Chen Gang could beat and scold his son in public so casually.
She looked at him and said, "Second Brother-in-law, your son is still young. It's normal for children not to understand things—there is no need to beat and scold your son in public."
Chen Gang was embarrassed and said, "Sister-in-law, we can talk about other matters later. You and your sons must be tired after traveling for so long. How about we send you back to my house first so you can rest?"
Hearing this, Wei Zhiying had no objections and replied gratefully, "Then I will have to trouble you, Second Brother-in-law."
It was the first time Chen Gang had been treated so politely, so he quickly waved his hand and said, "It's just a small matter."
Then he looked at his son and said, "Jianmin, show the way to your aunt and cousins. Watch your words—don't be rude again."
Looking at the sky, Chen Jianmin said, "Father, it's almost lunch break. How about I go back with Jianguo and prepare lunch? My aunt and cousins can have some food before they rest."
When he heard this, Chen Gang agreed readily. He patted his son's shoulder and said, "Okay, we will do as you said."
After he finished speaking, he looked at Wei Zhiying and said, "Sister-in-law, I'm sorry I can't entertain you personally. You and your sons can go with Jianmin for now."
"Second Brother-in-law, you can get busy with your work. It's me and my sons who come without notice."
They waited for a moment before Chen Jianguo came over. When Chen Gang called him, he had told him about the visitors' identity. So, he only glanced at them but didn't say anything.
As they walked back, the villagers looked at them and whispered among themselves.
Following Chen Jianmin and Chen Jianguo, Wei Zhiying and her sons observed them. They had thought that, since they were born and raised in a village, the Chen family members would behave like uneducated people.
They had heard that most villagers were greedy, rude, and petty-minded. But after meeting the Chen family, they had to admit that while they wore patched, dirty clothes, they didn't behave like people who had never seen the world.
Even when faced with visitors from the capital, they didn't flatter or butter them up. They just treated them like distant relatives coming for a normal visit.
Walking in front, Chen Jianmin observed his brother's dazed expression. After a while, he asked, "Jianguo, what are you thinking about?"
Hearing his question, Chen Jianguo regained his senses and replied, "Brother, I was thinking about what we should make for lunch. We still have two fish at home. How about we make fish soup?"
"Also, we can use the vegetables Aunt Li gave us a few days ago and make some egg and vegetable steamed buns. There is still some white flour and corn flour left—we can use that."
Chen Jianmin looked at him, and when he saw that his brother wasn't acting, he smiled and said, "Uncle Lingyun gave us some meat yesterday. Let's make braised pork for lunch."
Thinking about the braised pork his brother made, Chen Jianguo salivated. He nodded and agreed readily, "Okay!"
After walking for half an hour, they finally arrived at their house. Opening the gate, Chen Jianmin said, "Aunt, Cousins, this is my family's house. Please come in."
As they walked into the yard, they saw vegetables growing vigorously. Unlike other villagers' homes, there was no unpleasant smell here.
"Aunt, there's only one empty room at home, so you and my cousins will have to share it," Chen Jianmin said as he led them inside.
The empty room was located in the back area of the house, far from the rooms used by the rest of the family.
Originally, they had planned to use this room as a study space for the children. But since they had joined Dong Li and Dong Huang's study group, they mostly did their homework at Li Chenmo's house. So, the room had been left unused.
While he showed the room to Wei Zhiying and her sons, Chen Jianguo went to the backyard to wash the dirt off his body and prepare the ingredients for lunch.
Chen Jianmin entered the room and opened the window for ventilation. Although it was an unused room, they cleaned it every day, so there were no spider webs or dust inside.
He opened the cabinet and took out bedding, pillows, and a thin blanket. With practiced movements, he made the bed while saying, "Aunt, this bedding, the pillows, and the blanket are clean. You can use them with confidence."
When he was done, he added, "You can unpack your luggage first. I will boil some water for you to wash up."
"Thank you," Wei Zhiying replied.
What do you think?
