Chapter 8: The Weight of Betrayal
Cheno Bo walked through the dimly lit corridors of the Imperial Academy, his mind a storm of rage and cold calculation. His fists clenched and unclenched at his sides, the recent revelations still burning in his skull like molten iron.
His family had been murdered.
Aeliana had betrayed him.
Xian Ren and his father had orchestrated everything.
He had always known that noble politics were cutthroat, but to think that his family had been systematically wiped out while he remained oblivious within the Academy's walls... It was infuriating.
The academy was supposed to be neutral ground, a place where noble status meant less than merit. Yet, it was clear now that corruption had seeped even into its hallowed halls. Xian Ren was untouchable.
But not forever.
Aeliana’s Cold Words
He didn't have to look for her—she was waiting for him.
Standing near one of the Academy’s grand archways, Aeliana looked as radiant as ever. Her violet hair shimmered under the artificial lights, and her imperial uniform fit her like it was designed solely for her. But her beauty meant nothing to him now.
“Cheno,” she said, her voice soft but devoid of any remorse.
He stopped a few feet away. His gaze was unreadable. “Why?”
Aeliana exhaled, crossing her arms. “Don’t act so surprised. You were living in a fantasy.”
Cheno’s nails dug into his palms. “A fantasy?”
She met his eyes, unflinching. “Yes. You were a noble once, a Tier 2 family with a promising future. I was with you because it made sense. But when your family fell... what did you expect me to do? Ruin my future for some fallen heir with no power?”
Her words struck like a blade to the gut.
“So, you were just using me,” Cheno said, his voice eerily calm.
Aeliana shrugged. “I did what was best for myself. My family. And now, with Xian Ren, I have a future guaranteed Tier 1 status. I didn’t want to lie to you forever, Cheno.”
His jaw clenched. “Lying to me for even a second was enough.”
Her gaze softened for the briefest moment, but then she straightened. “It’s over, Cheno. Walk away before you embarrass yourself further.”
His mind flashed back to Xian Ren’s smug smirk, to the way Xian Fei had spoken about his father’s death like it was mere strategy. He wanted to scream, to rip everything apart—but he wouldn’t. Not yet.
“Enjoy your future, Aeliana,” he said, voice like ice. “You’ll regret it.”
She smirked. “Doubtful.”
Then she turned and walked away.
The Next Step: Binding to the Void Sovereign
That night, Cheno didn’t sleep.
He sat in the Academy’s training center, watching the simulation drones move in perfect synchronization. His mind was a whirlwind of plans, strategies, and burning rage.
He needed power.
He had already been training harder than most, excelling in his courses. Starship command, zero-gravity combat, military strategy—he was pushing himself to be the best. But even that wasn’t enough.
[System Notification: Directive Expansion Activated.]
His vision flickered as the familiar glowing text appeared before his eyes.
[New Path: Void Sovereign Unveiled.]
[Designation: Free Soldier. Authority Overridden. System Access Unlocked.]
Cheno’s breath hitched.
He had always known the system was different from others. But now, it was finally opening to him fully.
[The Void Sovereign is the pinnacle of space warfare. The ultimate command. The absolute force.]
[Binding Percentage: 10%.]
A new metric appeared before him. Binding Percentage? His mind raced as the system began explaining.
[The Void Sovereign was once a continental-level warship belonging to an advanced race, lost in a supernova destruction. The remnants of that race's greatest technology, the ship and the system—found their way to the bloodline of one who had survived. Your father was a distant descendant of that fallen race, but over generations, their legacy was forgotten. That is why the system has chosen you. You are the last hope to reclaim what was lost.]
Cheno’s heartbeat quickened. His father’s bloodline… was the key?
[Binding to the Void Sovereign requires strengthening your attributes. As your body and mind evolve, your synchronization with the ship will grow. When the Binding Percentage reaches 100%, full control will be granted. Until then, partial functions will gradually unlock.]
His vision flooded with a secondary list.
- Physical Enhancement: 5%
- Tactical Processing Speed: 8%
- Command Authority: 12%
- Void Energy Synchronization: 3%
Each of these represented different aspects of his growth. The stronger he became, the more of the Void Sovereign he could command.
And the final notification sealed his determination:
[When your Binding Percentage reaches 100%, the Void Sovereign will be fully yours.]
Cheno’s lips curled into a slow, dark smile.
They wanted to destroy him.
They wanted to bury his name.
But now… now he had something far greater than they could ever imagine.
He was done playing by their rules.
The true war was just beginning.
What do you think?
