Chapter 903: Get out [2/2]
And it extended to the Awakened. We found someone like Juno, which was a relief since Roach showed no interest. Even now he looked bored as fuck. If I didn't know any better, the bastard was sleeping with his eyes open.
"That is the wrong question to ask Zanele," Juno replied with a smile.
"Ho? And why is that?"
"You have yet to ask, why we even wish to gain the malice in the first place."
"But isn't it because you wish to gain strength?" the matriarch replied.
"That is true, but have you considered why?"
"Do not keep playing games with me, Awakened. I have little interest in them."
Juno's giggle, despite Zanele's anger, charmed those around her. Her tail swayed in the same way as a dog expressing its happiness.
"Fufu. And this is why up until now, no other Awakened has followed you. It is not because you cannot understand the language of the Reborn."
"What do you mean?"
Juno then faced me and asked a simple question, "My lord, would you permit me to share our first meeting?"
"Huh? Sure, I don't mind."
"Thank you, my lord."
Satisfied, Juno bowed before turning back to the matriarch of the Soldat clan.
"Zanele. You do not see us as allies but as tools to exploit. For this reason, no matter our abilities, you seek only profit. I have read up on Reapers. Your way of life is self-destructive. The exact opposite of what I expected. The reason I follow my lord is because he reached out to us first.
"My sisters and I were being slaughtered by vampires. There were other reapers with my lord. But they, much like you, did not see our kind as anything but monsters. My lord was the exception; then he showed great interest in our way of life and even honored me with a name."
It seemed a lifetime ago, but I remember the events Juno described. All I truly wanted was someone to fight alongside me. And I gained a reliable partner who saw the change I could bring.
'Although it is somewhat embarrassing to hear her say it in that manner,' I thought to myself.
"My lord did not even know what we could offer. But he risked his life to save us, the very ones you call monsters without asking for anything in return. He showed us another path different from the one we knew. For this reason, the Awakened will stand by none other than the Reaper you call Limitless."
"But that's…"
"I gave you the opportunity to speak. Be silent!" Juno roared.
The malice that came for her was like a wave of Death Resonance. It was many times thicker and felt domineering. The Elders who couldn't endure Juno's outburst began touching their hearts in agony. Yet Juno didn't stifle the malice flowing out of her body.
"I will answer my own questions before I do yours, Zanele. The Reborn wage war on each other. We have fought each other for as long as I can remember. The only alternative was to die. Malice is how we grow. Survival is the sole reason we wish to survive.
"For this reason, even if we gained all the Malice of your continent, it would never be enough! Your shortsightedness weighs what you can gain. You had nothing to lose! If not for my lord, I would not even help you even if you begged me!"
This was quite possibly the first time I saw Juno so emotional. It has only been a short time. But she has matured since I last saw her. While she acted like a mischievous brat to my family, I tend to forget that she was a queen of the Lizardkin.
Even my girls were quite surprised.
'Uwaa! Zanele fucked up, Junie is pissed as heck! Darling look!'
'The slag reminds me of an angry cat. Like some cunt stepped on its tail.'
'Robyn, only you would call something like her a cat. While I find it impressive, the way she spoke about Shujin was like a maiden in love.'
'Stop being an idiot, Aki; she is joking, I think. Still, Mr. Code, you have outdone yourself by recruiting someone like her. From what she just said, she is completely devoted to you.'
"If I were to outline what the Awakened could do for you, it would be as follows. First, we would have made excellent guards against the demons. Second, we could have cleansed the malice of all your Reapers. Third, we could have accompanied you in Hellsgate as you dive deeper.
"Fourth, my sisters and I could have served as ambassadors to the other Reborn on your battlefront. By forging alliances with them, you reduce the numbers of your enemies. Without us monster types, they lack the power to take independent action."
Those were really tangible benefits. If anyone else heard her, most would decide to take the Awakened into their ranks. Having another army to fight with us as we go deeper was something I didn't even foresee.
"What do you even risk losing? Your land? Your money? Your humans? We care for none of that! Yet even when we come to you in good will, you do not have the decency to view us as equals! You are a failure as a Matriarch! Under your leadership, your brood will go extinct!"
At the verbal lashing of Juno, the rest of the Elders stood up indignant. But in the same moment, Roach suddenly appeared in front of them, lance in hand. Towering over the tiny Reapers, the enormous, armored lizard grunted in anger.
"Go on. Do something..."
The two guards outside barged in, weapons raised. They looked exhausted as if they had been fighting. Moreover, their eyes were full of fear.
"Matriarch! Monsters suddenly jumped out of the ground! They are overpowering the entire village!"
Then, a figure slid into the hut and grabbed both guards by their heads. In an act of tyrannical strength, the figure slammed the guards to the ground, knocking both out cold. Its reptilian body slowly rose and bowed toward me and then to Juno.
"I greet my lord Limitless. Sister, we have subdued the village." The Vithriss reported respectfully. "No one has been terminated as per your commands."
Her simple announcement made the Soldat elders go pale. Zanele had a complicated expression on her face. She stared daggers at the two in front of her; unease and fear emanated from her body.
"Juno, your practical joke has gone on long enough," I said with a bored expression.
Juno, Roach, and the new Vithriss all kneeled in place. This entire charade reeked of a power play someone would cook up. I moved my head to the one using me as a boob rest. Bella looked away and tried to whistle. It came out as pathetic squeaks.
'Honey…'
'It was a joke, okay? It was the pervert's idea! I am innocent!'
'Sigh, we will talk about this later, Bella,' I said in exasperation.
"Juno, get out. Take the Awakened and guard the village."
"Understood, my lord."
Wordlessly, Juno, Roach, and the new Vithriss exited the hut. It was in bad taste, but I appreciated her for it. She gave me a chance to negotiate from a better position.
What do you think?
