Chapter 125 125: Mona - Danger!
Luo An spoke, his expression turning incredibly grim in an instant, before he fiercely stomped on the accelerator and twisted the steering wheel, sending the Chevrolet charging towards the highway on the right side of the intersection.
The sudden surge of acceleration startled Reesi, but recalling what Luo An had just said, she immediately turned her head and asked:
"Luo An, what did you think of? Where is Jacques hiding now?"
"It's Mona! Call her right now!"
As the Chevrolet weaved through the flow of traffic on the highway, Luo An, firmly gripping the steering wheel, explained with a grave demeanor to Reesi:
"There are three main targets for Jacques' revenge; they are the journalist Ivande, boss John King, and Mona's father Javari Evans.
Now that Ivande has died in a car accident, and John King has been bombed all over by a backpack bomb, the next target for Jacques can only be Javari Evans!
But Javari Evans has always been abroad, so…"
"So Jacques has turned his target toward Javari Evans' daughter! That's Mona Evans!"
Reesi found no flaws in Luo An's analysis. Remembering Jacques' previous act of rigging a backpack bomb that John King's son carried, she believed Jacques would definitely target Javari's daughter.
Realizing this, Reesi gasped in shock and, without hesitation, immediately searched for Mona's phone number and dialed it.
Beep beep beep—
Hearing the waiting tone from the phone, Luo An and Reesi both looked solemn, feeling tortured by the sound for the first time.
A few seconds later, the call was picked up.
"It's me, Mona."
Hearing the familiar voice of Mona over the phone, Luo An and Reesi both breathed a sigh of relief.
Fortunately, the worst had not happened.
Silently pushing the accelerator to the floor, the Chevrolet rapidly passed one car after another.
The new apartment Mona had bought was not far from here. Luo An judged the distance and speed, estimating that, barring any accidents, they should reach the building in about two minutes.
Exiting the apartment building's elevator, Mona, holding her laptop, heard the voice over the phone and asked puzzled:
"What's up? Reesi, is there any notification?"
The next second, Mona's face drastically changed:
"You're not telling me to go back to work overtime now, are you?!"
She had planned to take a nice bath and rest for the night.
Hearing Mona's fearful remark about overtime, Reesi's mouth twitched, and then she hurriedly relayed Luo An's analysis to Mona.
After Reesi finished, Luo An also asked eagerly:
"Mona, where are you now? Reesi and I are coming to find you!"
"I just got out of the elevator."
Upon hearing Reesi's words, Mona immediately stopped walking, her heart pounding as she looked towards her apartment door with a hint of fear.
If Jacques' target was indeed herself, Mona figured there were only two places suitable for him to make a move.
One was the parking lot next to the apartment building, and the other was her apartment itself.
She had just walked unharmed out of the parking lot, so Jacques wasn't there.
That left only the apartment.
If it weren't for Luo An's warning, and she had entered her apartment like usual, then...
Mona swallowed, knowing Jacques had extensive military experience, had carried out many missions, was agile, experienced, and a sniper.
Moreover, he was undoubtedly armed.
Demonti had a rifle, so Jacques' weaponry would likely be no less abundant.
Briefly comparing their respective strengths, Mona, who only had a pistol at her waist, concluded that she probably, likely, mostly, wouldn't be able to overcome him.
But now was not the time to panic. Glancing at the apartment door just a short distance away, Mona did not hang up the phone. Instead, holding her laptop, she took a deep breath, turned her body, and began to silently move towards the stairs.
Hearing Mona say she had just exited the elevator over the phone, both Luo An and Reesi's faces immediately turned pale.
They had both been to Mona's apartment and similarly concluded that there were only two places suitable for Jacques to strike.
Not only that, when Luo An went to the building where Mona's apartment was located, he also analyzed from the perspective of an assassin. He considered how to leave smoothly without attracting attention if he was trapped there.
It was a professional habit.
However, hearing that Mona hadn't hung up the phone and hadn't continued speaking, but there was also no strange sound coming from the other end, Luo An and Reesi exchanged glances, both guessing that Mona was silently moving towards the staircase.
As the Chevrolet sped over the roads and took another turn, Luo An finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Just two more traffic lights, and they would arrive at the building where Mona lived.
Seeing the tall building not far away, Reesi stuck out her tongue and moistened her lips, her expression also relaxed.
"Luo An,"
Reesi held down the mouthpiece of the phone, turned her head to Luo An, and said in a low voice:
"Should we contact Augustus?"
"Of course, and also contact SWAT."
Luo An nodded, immediately took out his own phone, and handed it to Reesi.
Just then, gunshots suddenly emerged from Reesi's phone.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Three gunshots, Luo An's pupils contracted.
Near the intersection ahead, two NYPD patrol officers were resting and eating hamburgers.
Seeing this, Luo An's eyes lit up, and then the Chevrolet, ignoring the red light, forcefully squeezed through a gap between two garbage trucks that were moving forward.
"Shit!"
"Are you crazy?"
"Jesus!"
At the intersection, the two garbage truck drivers cursed loudly, while the pedestrians and drivers who witnessed the scene gasped in shock, covering their mouths.
Seeing this, the two NYPD officers exchanged a look, threw away the hamburgers they had finished, and immediately started their car to chase after them.
"Chevrolet ahead! Pull over immediately!"
"Fu-k!"
It was unclear whether Reesi was scared by the gunshots or by the scene of the Chevrolet nearly hitting the garbage trucks, but her face turned pale, and she cursed loudly.
But with the situation being urgent, they ignored the NYPD's commands; Luo An continued to drive the Chevrolet towards the direction of the apartment building, while Reesi raised her phone and loudly asked:
"Mona! You..."
"I'm fine!"
Before Reesi could finish her words, the sounds of Mona running up the stairs and her rapid breathing came through:
"It's definitely Jacques! Call for support immediately! He has a handgun and a rifle!"
Just when Mona had managed to move silently to the stairwell, before she could breathe a sigh of relief, the door of her newly purchased apartment was suddenly opened from the inside.
Immediately, Jacques's expressionless face appeared before Mona, and he also raised the handgun in his hand.
Mona, running down the outermost side of the staircase, heard the gunshots and instantly broke out in cold sweat, then felt immensely grateful for Luo An and Reesi.
If it weren't for their warning, Mona felt she might have entered Heaven the moment she opened her apartment door.
On the other side, Jacques stood at the stairwell entrance, watching Mona's retreating back, his face grim.
According to Jacques's original plan, Mona was supposed to be knocked unconscious the moment she entered the apartment, then stuffed into the trunk of a car and taken away.
The whole process would be silent, not attracting anyone's attention.
But things didn't develop as he had planned.
"It's okay."
Taking a deep breath, Jacques picked up the rifle in his arms, adjusted the scope, and slowly aimed down at the gaps in the stairwell.
He used to be a sniper.
At that moment, the alarm outside the apartment building went off loudly.
What do you think?
