Chapter 54: Build!
The next day, three construction teams came together and saw each other in a single room.
They looked at each other warily. Obviously, Mr. Bo’s tone was that this was a sure client, but seeing the others it seemed that it would be a bidding war.
They were a bit disappointed, especially the smaller businessmen, as their chances of winning were lower.
However, when the clients—a young couple—came to meet them and explain the situation, their tense shoulders slumped in relaxation.
"To confirm, we each have a project?" One couldn’t help but ask again, just to be sure.
"That is correct." Cauis said, answering for Khalifa. Before going here, she asked him to be her primary spokesperson. He then handed them various plans and drawings.
The mid-sized contractors were assigned a villa each. While the big contractor was assigned an island.
What’s more, because of the time constraints, she explicitly said that she was willing to pay more, as long as the price was reasonable.
Fortunately, the professor was there to audit, so she was rest assured.
Their generosity surprised the contractors very much.
But then they remembered that it was Mr. Bo who called them, and they mused that this must be a very rich kid who was looking for a place to spend her overflowing money.
Along with the deeds, Khalifa was given the plans and maps of the properties, and the contractors had the relevant documents given to them for proper planning.
The house in City A was a similar house to the one she was living in, except it had a zen theme. "I want this house with better security. Convert the garden to a greenhouse and the basement to an indoor farm."
She also added solar panels and water purifiers. She already calculated the amount of food she’d store there as well.
There were also double gates in case zombies breach the main one, due to its bigger wider gate. This way, those inside still had an additional leeway.
Similar treatment would be done to the other house.
The house in City G was not really in city G, but a mansion in the countryside nearby. It would have similar features as the other house, but twice as big.
She wasn’t going to live in those places, but she was planning on giving it to fated ones.
She would be hiring stewards, gardeners, and farmers of good character to take care of the property.
She would tell them about the functions of the place before the apocalypse began, with just enough time to call their families.
Hopefully, the lucky ones to reach these places were decent people, but that would already be beyond her control.
Other than the houses, she gave another project to the two contractors.
They would be purchasing container houses in bulk, providing them with solar panels and water purifiers, as well as several kilograms of different food stuff with long shelf lives.
These container houses would be placed in different areas, mostly empty lots, and ideally visible from the roads. She asked to set them up at least one every kilometer around City A and City B, as well as roads from City E to F.
This would be her main humanitarian effort to help fellowmen, and it was what that man and the old man would’ve wanted. And there was also that man who saved them both.
She thought that he ough have a share in the old man’s wealth, and she could tell he was either a soldier or a public servant, and this way was a good use of his money.
What she didn’t know was that her actions would, really, actually indirectly save Kylo’s life very soon.
Seeing that the public service buildings had been planned, she went back to the main concern: Her future abode.
This would undoubtedly be the island. It would likely be her, her men’s, and maybe even their family’s, homes.
The Island, named Horseshoe Island due to its slight U-shape, was a very small continental island connected to the Eastern Province around no more than a hundred kilometers in its longest dimension.
The island was worth about a few hundred thousand dollars, relatively cheap among islands, due to its rocky seas and boring Flora and fauna.
However, Khalifa liked it not only because it was surrounded by water and had a cute shape, but also because of its elevation. Even if the ice glaciers melted down, her home wouldn’t flood.
There was no mention of extreme natural disasters in the book, but she dared not underestimate the apocalypse.
Khalifa decided to give the main contractor the right to design, and she simply needed to say her requirements.
The house would be located at the inner ’U’ of the island, giving them an extremely good view of the lagoon.
She asked for similar set-ups as the others, but on a much, much, bigger scale. She also asked them to plant a variety of plants and crops as well.
There shall be greenhouses and underground hydroponic farms, and there would also be windmills and hydroelectric generators.
Water would only be undrinkable if zombies rotted in the water. The island would have natural springs and reservoirs and she planned on maintaining and harvesting these resources. However, she would still have high-end filtering systems, just in case.
Infrastructure like waste management would also be considered and self-sufficient, with every waste recycled to something with value.
In the end, she decided to build a small town, located at the outer side of the island (the outer side of the U), with buildings up to three stories. She didn’t believe no one else would reach her island.
In which case she could provide them solace, in exchange for their loyalty and labor, of course.
Similarly, all facilities would be able to handle tens of thousands of people at a time.
These were actually what ate up much of her resources.
On the inner side of the island would be her villa, which would be located at the peak, surrounded by massive gardens and forests. There would also be a few other villas for her confidantes, should there be any.
Otherwise, denser buildings would be used, to ensure the greenery of the island was maintained.
Plants would not suddenly gain life or anything, but they were definitely essential to human survival.
"We will have to use a lot of Steel here, for quick construction."
"Money is not a problem. But I need everything completed within 3 weeks."
Khalifa looked at the overview of the plan and felt faintly hopeful. She turned to look at Caius, who had been staring at her the whole time.
She smiled. They dreaded the apocalypse , but they couldn’t help but be a bit excited in building this place.
After all, whatever happened, this would be their home.
What do you think?
