Chapter 157: Lance Blackthorn
Lance burst into the skies on the back of his Dragonite. He spared a glance below at the wreckage of the conference room he left behind. At the onset of the ruckus, a series of barriers had emerged to shield the innocent occupants from the explosion of Type Energy.
Lance chuckled. “Good work, Summers” He murmured, only to receive a pulse of irritation in his mind in return. The man laughed. “I’m sorry, babe. I’ll buy you a drink when I get back.” He said, prompting the mental link between him and Sabrina to slam shut on the other end.
“She’ll get over it.” Lance mused as he turned his gaze towards the distance where a roiling dark cloud of Golbats was ascending to the skies alongside him.
At such an imposing sight, the Champion of the Indigo League whistled in spite of himself. “No wonder little Lilian risked so much to steal Koga’s secret move. That’s like what? Three? Four hundred clones?” Lance wondered if he could persuade his niece to share her spoils with her beloved uncle.
At that thought, the swarm of Golbats shifted and charged towards Lance’s direction, eliciting a savage grin from the battle-crazed Dragon Master. “Alright, Orion. Time for a bit of fun!” The Champion exclaimed, prompting his Dragonite to roar out in excitement and meet the endless swarm of Golbats head on in a surge of Draconic Energy, like a meteor streaking through the night skies.
This was Draco Comet — Lance’s self-devised signature move that combined Draco Meteor with Dragon Rush.
Lance hunkered down at the turbulent collision, the flimsy shadow clones disintegrating as they came into contact with the Draconic comet’s destructive aura. With a single uninterrupted charge, Orion pierced through what felt like an entire kilometer of the swarm to reach the mastermind on the other end.
Koga was hovering in the sky with his arms crossed, a set of Golbat wings protruding behind him. The man looked as cold and impassive as ever.
Lance grinned. “Let’s wake the old man from his daydream, shall we?”
“Drago, dragonite!” Orion roared as a dense, explosive ball of Type Energy began to coalesce around his fist. With a delayed sonic boom, the Dragonite closed the distance between him and the enemy trainer in an instant, abruptly slamming an empowered Focus Punch into the stoic Koga when he drew near.
But instead of an explosion of blood and gore, Orion’s fist was instead met with an ethereal wisp of shadows which faded along with the silhouette of the treacherous Ninja Master.
Lance clicked his tongue. “Damned ninjas and their damned tricks.” He murmured, just as he felt a chill on the back of his neck, prompting him to jump off Orion’s back in haste. And just in time as well, because a sharp spear of Poison struck the Dragonite’s back at the very next moment.
The falling Champion shifted, rotating his body mid-plummet to take in his surroundings, and managed to catch sight of another Koga who emerged from behind Orion at some point. The Blackthorn patriarch scoffed at his opponent’s cowardly behaviour. But then again, what else did he expect from a shifty Ekans like Koga?
Once he confirmed that Orion was fine, and very angry, Lance casually expanded another Ultra Ball in his hand and summoned a Charizard to catch his fall.
“CHAA-Rizard!” An enraged Charizard with a gleaming collar on his neck took to the field. The collar prominently displayed an iridescent jewel at its front, with a dna-like helix structure etched into the center.
Ever since Lance’s Charizard found out what happened to his brethren, he had been burning with barely contained rage and a desire for vengeance. And while the true mastermind had yet to be uncovered, the two-faced Koga would serve as adequate fodder for now.
Seeing that his sneak attack had failed, Koga turned tail and ran, half falling and half flying with the Golbat on his back towards the cover of a forest down below.
Lance scoffed. “Oh no you don’t!” He exclaimed as he signaled for both his Pokemon to give chase. As if a measly little Golbat could outrun his Dragons!
A sentiment that Koga seemed to agree with as well, because the moment that the two streaks of raging fire were about to catch up to him, the Ninja Master exploded into a cloud of yellowish purple gas.
Lance frantically jerked at his Charizard’s collar to steer him away, hoping that his Dragonite was agile enough to follow suit as well.
A little bit of Poison was of little consequence to a Champion’s Pokemon. The problem being, Koga liked to mix in all sorts of nasty pathogens into his Poison as well — more often than not, insidious chronic killers that would slowly drain their victims until they wither away from the inside.
It was a good thing that Koga still considered himself a proud guardian of Kanto, otherwise they would have a pestilent plaguebearer to deal with. But now that he was unseated and unfettered, perhaps they needed to employ some safeguards in Johto.
“Koga didn’t use any of his viruses back in the war out of respect for proper conduct. But who can claim to understand the thoughts of this deranged madman in the present day?” Even Janine, Koga’s daughter, had become increasingly disconnected from the man.
“Burn it!” Lance commanded, he could not afford to let the hazardous cloud of gas be carried away by the winds.
With a vicious roar, both Charizard and Orion let out white hot blasts of flames, completely engulfing the Poisonous fumes and incinerating even the most microscopic of particles from existence.
Lance frowned, Koga was nowhere to be seen after the flames had cleared. And he doubted that the wily ninja had perished in the heat. “Summers, if you’re still there, did you keep track of where that Rattata skittered off to?”
A mental pulse of affirmation touched his mind in response as his instincts were directed towards the general vicinity of the forest. Lance thanked his helper before yelling at Orion to “Smoke him out!”
In response, the Dragonite roared, his chest bulged, glowing an eerie purplish light, and from his gaping maw, unleashed a condensed orb of pure Dragon Type Energy into the sky. The orb pierced through the dark veil of clouds, uncovering the glimmering silver moon adorning the night sky, before shattering and descending as a destructive rain of Draco Meteor. Each fragment contained, within it, enough power to level a skyscraper.
The earth quaked and trees shattered. Any wildlife unfortunate enough to be caught in the carnage perished without a thought as an entire swathe of forests was leveled without care. All to reveal a bruised and bloodied Koga who dug out of the ground with his dying Arbok amidst dirt, flames and rubble.
Lance hopped back onto Orion’s back and returned his Charizard. Traitor or not, it was hardly honorable of him to gang up on a decrepit old man. The Champion smirked and ordered his Dragonite to charge at Koga, only to be interrupted mid way by a flash of light and a scarred and grizzled looking Nidoking that emerged onto the field.
Lance took advantage of the sudden halt in his Dragonite’s Extreme Speed to jump off Orion's back, tumbling briefly onto the ground and recovering just quick enough to raise his hardy Dragon Scale cape to block a deadly kunai that was thrown his way, one dripping in sinister looking Poison.
The Champion chuckled. “Really, Kyou? That’s low even for you…” He muttered, only to freeze in his tracks when he got up and saw a familiar looking device on the Ninja Master’s head; cold, gleaming, adorned with black jewels and protruding wires with painful looking claws digging into the man’s scalp — it was the abominable device that was used to force a Mega Evolution without needing the use of a Key Stone.
Lance roared. “Have you completely forsaken your pride as a Pokemon Trainer?!”
And right on cue, the former Elite Four member released a Golbat onto the field, this one with some sort of intrusive device implanted into its skull. The Golbat’s eyes were glazed over, but Lance could hear its tortured soul screaming out in pain. A fact that was further substantiated by pained sobs from a distant voice in his head. And it wasn’t just Sabrina either, the Golbat’s plight was enough to bring even the ruthless Dragon Master to tears.
“Flowery words from a clan of invading, bloodthirsty conquerors!” Koga yelled in return, madness evident in his eyes.
Lance clenched his fist and looked towards the sky, hot tears staining his cheeks, as if to implore the stars for their mercy. “How could we, as humans, be allowed to stoop so low? Why? What went wrong?”
“Blood that was spilled may never be retrieved,” Lance muttered. “The only way forward was for everyone to unite…” The Indigo Champion took in a deep, shaky breath, hardening his gaze against the disgraced Pokemon Master with an accusatory look. “Tell me, Koga! Why do we fight, if not for peace?!”
Koga growled, face twisted into a sneer. “Blood can only be washed by blood… So long as your blood still flows, there shall be no peace, Blackthorn!”
“CHAAARR!!!” With an aggrieved roar, Lance’s Charizard took to the field, the flames on his tail grew and writhed, turning gold then white, and finally a dark blue. The flames grew and grew, until it encompassed the entirety of the Charizard like a cocoon.
All the while, the Key Stone dangling around Lance’s neck shined as the rage and sorrow shared by the pair of trainer and Pokemon harmonized, melding their minds into one cohesive whole. The Dragon blood flowing within Lance’s Blackthorn ancestry awakened, triggering a long dormant chain of Charizard’s DNA as his Mega Evolution shifted form.
Charizard grew in size, the Pokemon’s flaming scales stained a deep black as orange merged with purple. The dark blue flames contained within him grew so powerful that they began spewing out of the Fire Dragon’s maw, lest he be burned alive from the inside.
On the other end, the wretched Golbat let out a shrill cry, one so haunting and full of agony that it was sure to plague Lance’s nightmares for years to come. The Golbat’s form shifted as a dark and sinister Light of Evolution took hold.
A crunchy, wet squelching sound could be heard as a new set of wings sprouted from the Golbat. The Pokemon’s iconic open maw forcefully slammed shut as its bones shifted, forcing an Evolution into a Crobat as the device completely bypassed the requisite human-Pokemon bond that typically triggered the phenomenon.
Koga gritted his teeth, holding back a cry of pain from the excess emotions spilling into his mind. The resistors in his headgear weren't meant to handle the strain of forcing a regular Friendship Evolution.
But the disgraced Pokemon Master did not stop there as he pushed even further, forcing another two sets of wings to sprout from the Crobat’s torso, for a total of eight demonic appendages. The Crobat grew in size as its claws enlarged and lengthened, gleaming sharp under moonlight. A pair of fangs protruded and grew, until it became too long to be contained by its mouth.
The Crobat’s eyes turned bloodshot, barely conscious from the incredible strain that was imposed upon the poor Pokemon. The end result was an abomination like Lance had never seen before. Just looking at the poor creature made Lance’s heart ache.
“Don’t worry, I’ll end your suffering soon…” The Champion whispered, voice hoarse from grief. “There shall be no more mercy. Koga needs to die, right here and right now.” Lance vowed as he clenched his fist and raised it to the air, prompting his Mega Charizard to let out an earth shaking roar as a dark ball of flame condensed in his maw.
On the other end, the haggard looking Koga yelled out as well, his voice filled with anger and hatred. The abominable Mega Crobat cried out in sync, a powerful ball of pure white Type Energy coalesced between its saber-like fangs.
And with one last synchronous cry, each voice filled with the varying thoughts and intent of their emotional owners, the two Mega Pokemon unleashed their attacks.
Jet black flames met with a bright, destructive Hyper Beam. The two explosive forces clashed in the middle with a deafening noise. And for a brief moment in time, all went silent as the earth sundered, until another shockwave broke out with a bright dome of light, completely encompassing the area as a big chunk of Mount Silver disintegrated into nothing.
Even the nearby Indigo Village was affected. Buildings blew apart, debris and rubble raining down onto the barren city to cause even more collateral damage. It was a good thing that this occurred off season, so the place was unoccupied for the most part.
Lance looked down at the carnage in the embrace of his Dragonite, who swooped in at the last minute to save him from the destructive blast. His life force was utterly drained as he struggled to stay awake. The Champion had truly given it his all in that singular attack.
As the light cleared and aftermath settled, Lance scanned the ruined terrain to find a deceased Crobat, still in its monstrous form as its life finally expired, free from eternal torment. “May you find peace among the stars.” Lance prayed.
Aside from the unfortunate bat Pokemon, Lance could also see his Mega Charizard standing in the massive crater. His Pokemon’s flames reduced to fumes as the Fire Dragon huffed in exhaustion. In tandem with his trainer, the Charizard had given his all to that attack as well.
However, more worryingly, Koga was nowhere in sight. There was not a single bone fragment or blood stain on the ground to indicate that the former Elite Four was ever present on the field.
Lance frowned. “Did I do it? Or did he get away?”
In response, a familiar mind briefly poked his, prompting Lance to let go of the connection between him and his Charizard. Which completely dispelled the Mega Evolution as Charizard fell to the ground in exhaustion.
“He got away…” A distant voice echoed in Lance’s head, confirming his suspicion. “But Koga is not unscathed.” Sabrina added. “Even now, I can feel his mind fading. He does not have long in this world…”
The Champion nodded, nearly falling unconscious as he did. “Dead or alive… I want… search team… scour… area...” Lance commanded, his voice fading along with his vision. “Summers… you and Claire… in charge until I… Until I’m… back.” And with that, Lance fainted. His Dragonite nuzzled at him in concern as he flew down to the ground to retrieve his other fallen companion as well.
What do you think?
