Into the Unown (Pokemon Fanfiction OC)

Chapter 154

An intense heat washed over the harbor, completely sapping the moisture out of the air. It was a good thing that a storm had just rolled through, otherwise, Nina could easily see a more arid environment being set on fire.

“T-that abomination is an affront to nature!” Lilian exclaimed, teeth clattering all the while.

Indeed, while Nina had not seen a Mega Evolution in person until this point, even she could tell that something was wrong with the Mega Charizard’s aura. “Professor Oak said that Megas have a similar aura to Alpha Pokemon. But all I can feel from that thing is pain and sorrow. None of that intimidating awe I felt from the Alphas I encountered in the past.”

“We need to stop them.” Nina declared. “We can’t let that thing escape into the city. Who knows what sort of destruction it might cause.”

Lilian nodded in agreement while Cole was huddled on the ground, still yet to recover from his mental trauma.

“I take everything back. We do need backup after all.” Before Nina jumped into action, she took a quick picture of the Mega Charizard and sent it to Ali and Misty with a voice recording. “Hey guys, we’ve got a crisis here. Need backup, ASAP!”

Nina gazed at the manic looking Noboru Yamaguchi, his face twitching in pain, shuffling from one expression to the next. It seemed that this forced Mega Evolution was causing him a lot of strain as well.

“The most efficient solution to this problem is to take out Noboru.” Nina murmured, eliciting a nod from Lilian as the girl’s shadow shifted, the Haunter contained within, sneaking away to the side.

Nina whistled, to signal Brucey, except her Golbat had yet to recover from the previous mental assault as well. The girl frowned and asked Espy to help placate her teammate. It was a good thing that Nairy and Sapphire were minimally affected. She could still sense some fear in her Dragonair, but as a Dragon sitting atop the apex of the Pokemon food chain, nothing short of a Legendary could cow her partner.

Surprisingly, Sir Clodington remained stalwart as well, his undying faith towards Nairy propping him up.

However, before the two Dragonairs could even spring into action, the Mega Charizard shifted. Its wings flexed and flapped, getting ready to burst into the air.

“Espy! Trap Charizard in a barrier, now!” They couldn’t afford to lose the Mega Pokemon in the skies, not without a powerful enough Flyer to go after it.

“ESS!!!” Espy cried and frantically moved to relocate her Psychic barrier only for it to shatter immediately upon first contact with the Mega Charizard.

“Dammit! Nairy, Double Pulse. Take it down!” Nina called. Lilian followed suit with a similar command for Sapphire.

The joint attack impacted, but with nary an effect. The Mega Charizard just bellowed in anger and shrugged off the bolts of Type Energy.

And just when it felt like all hope was lost, a large, boxy Psychic barrier suddenly encompassed the Mega Charizard, completely obstructing its flight.

Nina frowned, Espy preferred circular barriers and judging by the irritated look on her princess’s face, the barrier wasn’t her doing. “Did Sabrina finally show up?” The girl wondered, only to be proven wrong when Mob the Alakazam teleported to her side in a flash.

“Zam, kazam.” The Psychic Pokemon cried and gave Nina a reassuring nod. As if to say; “Don’t worry love, the cavalry’s here.”

Nina laughed and returned the nod. “Great timing Mob, you mystics really do love your dramatic entrances huh?” The girl then looked around, trying to spot the Alakazam’s trainer. “Where’s Mash?” She asked, only to receive a bunch of images in her head, of Fuyumi and Matsuri engaged in battle alongside Mash who had a Drowzee with him.

Nina sighed in relief, glad that Fuyumi was busy fighting against regular old criminals instead of the monstrosity that they were currently facing. It really goes to show how thoroughly screwed Nina’s predicament was when being surrounded by a bunch of thugs was somehow the preferable alternative.

However, Nina’s reverie was interrupted by a grunt from Mob and the sound of a cracking barrier in the distance. The Mega Charizard had begun pummeling at the barrier in rage, straining Mob’s ability to keep it in place.

“Espy, reinforce Mob! Nairy, you’re with Lilian!” Nina yelled as she returned Sir Clodington and the incapacitated Brucey. She then turned to Lilian and said; “I’ll handle Noboru, you focus on suppressing Charizard.” And with a nod of acknowledgement, the two girls sprang into action.

A small Protect panel materialized in front of Mega Charizard’s fist, stopping it from shattering its enclosure. Charizard roared, angry that its efforts were thwarted and immediately wound up another Focus Punch, only to be stopped again by a frowning Espy, teeth clenched tight in concentration. Her efforts allowed Mob to fix his barrier and open up a small opening for Nairy and Sapphire to slither through.

Nairy groaned, feeling his body shrivel up from the stifling heat. The Psychic enclosure around the Mega Charizard had unintentionally created a massive oven, cooking any who dared to enter.

“Nair! Dragon-nair!” With a curt admonishment from Sapphire, Nairy dodge out of the way, just in time to avoid a Dragon Claw aimed his way.

In response, both Dragonairs’ tails gleamed purple, striking the Charizard’s head in retaliation.

‘GRAAAAH!!!” Mega Charizard roared in fury, flames coalescing in its jaw and condensed into a pure white orb of destruction.

“Nair!!!” Nairy cried, calling Sapphire to his side to huddle up as he formed a Protect barrier around them.

A blinding flash of light exploded within the barrier, nearly decimating Nairy’s Protect in an instant, were it not for Espy who chimed in at the last second. Concrete and tarmac disintegrated beneath their feet, completely obliterating the section of the docks that served as the battlefield between the three fearsome Pokemon, dropping them all into the ocean in a cloud of steam where the two Dragonairs held the advantage.

Mob’s barrier was destroyed but managed to contain the scope of the destruction. Yet despite that, Nina stumbled mid-run, from the ground quaking and cracking beneath her. The girl winced as her arm hit the floor, managing to transition into a roll and recover in a crouching position, where she glared at Noboru who was simultaneously crying in pain and cackling hysterically at the same time.

“Sir Clodington, go!” With a forceful toss, Nina threw her Pokeball at Noboru, which deposited a hefty Clodsire that slammed onto the ground with an Earthquake, further imbalancing Nina and forcing her to get down on all fours.

“Sludge Wave, Clody!” Nina called, nearly biting her tongue off as she spoke.

“Clooodd!” With a baritone cry, a wave of toxic sludge spewed from Sir Clodington’s gaping, toothless maw.

However, instead of being ensnared in the sticky Poison, Noboru leapt high into the air with inhuman strength and slammed down next to Sir Clodington before lashing out at the spiny fish Pokemon with a powerful kick.

The blubber surrounding Sir Clodington’s bulbous body quivered lamely upon impact as he groaned in pain, but the Clodsire was otherwise unmoved. Despite Noboru’s enhanced state, a human could hardly contend with a fully evolved Ground Type Pokemon when it came to physical prowess after all.

“Cloood” Sir Clodington cried in annoyance, purple spindly spikes shot out from the six circular patches on his back to strike at Noboru in retaliation. But once more, the man dodged with uncanny reflexes, further emphasizing the highly irregular state that he was in right now.

However, the moment that Noboru landed on the ground, his shadow came to life, revealing a Haunter who attempted to reach for the contraption on his head before being unceremoniously punched aside by Noboru.

Nina frowned, the fact that the man’s aura was potent enough to affect a Ghost Type was very concerning. “We’re standing on concrete so Clody wouldn’t be able to Dig.” A shortcoming that Nina would have to address at some point. “Sandstorm is a bad idea too ‘cause who knows what Noboru is capable of right now.” Nina definitely did not want to have her senses impaired when in the vicinity of a juiced up superhuman.

“Mudshot into Earthquake!” Nina called, earning her an annoyed growl from Noboru, who once again dodged by leaping into the air and landing next to Nina with an audible crack.

“Shit!” The girl cursed and scrambled to get away, but immediately yelped in pain when Noboru grabbed hold of her forearm, his vice-like grip solid like a Krabby’s as Nina felt her bones crack.

With a forceful yank, Noboru forced Nina up and grabbed hold of her neck with his other hand before steadily lifting the dainty little girl up with a sadistic grin on his face.

Nina gasped, desperately kicking and clawing at her assailant as she felt the pressure steadily closing in on her throat, her eyes bulging, vision gradually fading in a sea of stars.

“Cloood!” Sir Clodington slammed onto the concrete floor, trying but failing to Dig into the man-made substance due to his inability to soften it. The Clodsire cursed his stubby appendages and shot a Venoshock at the hostile human in a desperate attempt to save his liege’s partner.

Despite grunting in pain at the stinging projectile, Noboru was largely unfazed, too focused on snuffing out the life of the meddling brat in his grasp. “Grrrr…” The lunatic let out a feral growl and abruptly broke out in a manic cackle. “AHA! AHAHAHA!”

However, before Noboru could snap Nina’s neck, the girl managed to expand and drop one of the Pokeballs in her belt to summon Hinata the Venomoth, who was largely shielded from the Charizard’s mental assault earlier since she was in her Pokeball, and was well trained enough to immediately recognize the urgency of the situation her ward was under.

The moment that the Hinata regained her clarity, she burst out into a cloud of Stun Spore, paralyzing Noboru and weakening his grip just enough for Nina to pry herself loose. Nina heaved and coughed the moment that she hit the ground, feeling her limbs seize up from breathing in the surrounding Stun Spore.

“Dammit! It’s just one thing after another isn’t it.” Fortunately, the Paralysis allowed Haunter an opening to swoop in and snatch away the sinister helmet on Noboru’s head, causing the man to cry out in pain and anguish before falling into a writhing mess on the ground.

Nina sighed inwardly in relief. “Hopefully that cancels the Mega Evolution.” However, just when she had that thought, the scarred and bloodied figure of a severely injured Nairy was thrown out of the water and slammed limply onto the crumbling docks. The girl had neglected the fact that when a trainer fainted, the sudden termination of that mental connection would result in their Mega Pokemon going berserk — a flaw that wasn’t depicted in the games of Nina’s past life.

And with a mighty roar, the Mega Charizard burst out of the water in a fiery blitz with a screaming Sapphire tightly coiled around its torso

“Sapphire!” Lilian yelled in the distance. “Let go! You’re going to burn up at this rate!” The young Dragon Tamer pleaded with tear filled eyes, prompting her Dragonair to loosen her grip and fall limply from the sky. Lilian cried out once more as she implored Mob to help catch her partner, Espy was too drained to be of assistance.

“CHAAAR!!!” With an aggrieved roar, flames once again coalesced in the Charizard’s jaw as it unleashed a super condensed Fire Blast towards Noboru and Nina’s direction, eyes red with a vindictive gaze.

“Crap…” Nina tried to fight through the Paralysis, to reach towards her Pokeballs and return her Pokemon. But in the end, she found herself engulfed in a destructive blast, her body thrown into the air towards the surrounding waters.

“Nair!!!”

The last thing that Nina remembered as her body impacted the water was her partner’s fervent cry and a stream of bubbles from the air being knocked out of her lungs. And right as her mind was about to surrender into the cold oblivion, there was the muffled roar of thunder, a warm light, and a pair of thick muscular arms pulling her into a comforting embrace.
