Chapter 189: 21 Days Left?
Lillian sat at her desk. Her day of training had finished. But, of course, it was just one out of many.
She stared down at the notebook and pen before her and straightened her back, getting to work.
She noted down the countless close calls she had. Starting with the Entrance Exam with Marionette, Gram, Xander and Testrie, Reph and Millis. But, also the ferocious Bear.
She then moved on to her Trial. The Catacomb dweller was easy enough. But the Catacomb Brawler wasn't. She still remembered how difficult it was to face it. However, she had grown stronger.
The ones that would pose an issue in that Trial — with her current strength — would be the Beetle, the Violet Tree, and... The Corrupted Catacomb Dweller...
She turned the page and continued.
The most recent close call she had was with the Needle Prowler, otherwise known by her as the Spider.
It was capable of melding into the fog seamlessly, bombarding her and the Beetle with high-speed needles.
But that wasn't all...
It was nimble on its legs, had strength greater than the Beetle — even being able to get through its once-impenetrable shell — and had caused her to use countless potions in her fight.
She had even needed to spend her hard-earned points on a Major Affinity Pill.
Now that she thought about it, she hadn't checked her points in a while.

She needed to grow faster.
Lillian raised her hand, moving the System Panel to the side. She then tapped at the screen, causing it to morph.
[24,097 TP -> 19,097 TP]
The girl watched as the Panel now had a dark black square in the centre of it. She reached inside, pulling out an interesting-looking pill.
Her eyes shone with familiarity. But... Also, a look of hesitance...
Compared to the lower quality ones she took in, these had the side effect of causing ones inside to feel like they were burning.
Burning and bloated.
In her intense battle with the Spider, though, she was able to ignore it to a degree. The reason... It was because she was "high" on adrenaline.
So much so, that she was able to completely disregard the pain that came from the loss of her arm.
The pill that was held in between her index and thumb shook along with her hand. She was shaking a bit. She wasn't going to have the numbing effects of the hormone.
Could she... Do it—
Lillian popped it into her mouth. Her eyes then shot wide open, immediately. Once the pill had completely melted into her body, a sudden force slammed into her core.
But, due to the fact that her Mana Core was right beside her heart, it felt like someone had punched her square in the chest.
BAM!
She bent over her desk, slamming the side of her fist against the table, reflectively. She winced repeatedly, her face contorting at the scorching feeling of something coursing through her body.
It was like molten metal was being injected into her blood vessels, merging with her blood, whilst still keeping its heat.
Not only does she have to deal with that, but also the feeling of her heart beating like drums. It was suffocating in a way. Bloating too.
After a minute had gone by, the fiery side effects of the pill wore off.
Her breathing was harsh, and her body was shaking, but the result was noticeable.
The pills of higher quality did more than increase your affinity. But it also forcefully increased the size of your Mana Core. However... It would cause temporary strain.
The strain was an intense soreness. It was almost like the feeling of spraining your ankle.
It would feel like it was swelling. It would feel like it was throbbing, like a second heart. And pain when she needed to use her mana.
Such was the return of skipping countless months or maybe a year for some in progress.
She let out a tired breath of relief — the side of her head resting on her desk. She was lucky.
She had a tool capable of making her stronger with just a tiny bit more effort. She had arguably the best trainer she could ask for. And last of all... She had time.
[19,097 -> 14,097]
Lillian raised her hand, retrieving yet another pill. She stared warily at the pill. Like everything in the world, the pill was flawed due to its side effects.
"Faith is the strongest foundation for growth and strength." Lillian quietly muttered, repeating a certain Assassin's words.
She gritted her teeth and popped it into her mouth. Her tired body then shot up, reflectively standing up from her desk. Her right hand then shot up towards her neck.
In her hand was the charm of her "Lucky" necklace.
Three factors played in her survival. The motivation to get stronger, the interest of Fate, and the amusement of the Lady of Fate.
She had faith that until she had reached the end of her Great Destiny that Marionette spoke of, she would not die as long as she had something worthy to bring to the table of Entertainment.
Lillian stumbled back into her chair, the back of her foot tripping over one of its legs.
THUD!
"Ha... Ha..."
Lillian's chest rose and fell, quick and slow. Her sweat poured from her forehead. Although her chest burned and her body sore, she felt like something else had appeared inside her heart.
A flame of Motivation.
Just like the pill, she too was flawed. That's why...
"Haha..." Lillian gave an exaggerated smile, laying on her back as she let out a chuckle that hid her current uncomfort. She needed to get stronger fast.
After an excruciating amount of time, she pushed herself back to her feet and fell back into her chair. She bent over her table, supporting herself with shaking arms.
She stared down into her notebook, looking at a string of numbers...
[April 5th]
The current date was March 15th. The Tournament begins on the 1st, while the Invasion begins on the 5th. She had exactly 21 more days to prepare.
Lillian scratched the back of her head, "L-looks like I have a lot of work cut out for me... How fun..."
{21 Days before the Invasion.}
What do you think?
