Chapter 148
The journey with such a large group was really chaotic. Since Viretta and Iola were no ordinary travelers, there were so many people looking for them.
"I never thought Father would be the one to interfere like that. Maybe it was wrong of him to coax me."
Iola, rarely, sighed deeply.
Monaine had been eyeing Viretta the entire time on their way to Sahra. It seemed he believed that if it were Viretta, she could be the mercenary who would conquer the continent, following in his footsteps.
"It was tough, really. My hands were all blistered."
The issue with his belief was that he thought that any weakness in combat could be overcome with training.
He believed that after three years of training, she could become a decent mercenary and tried to push Viretta through hellish training. Viretta had to constantly evade him, running away.
Her talent for escaping was praised, which, ironically, only increased Monaine’s affection for her, creating a vicious cycle.
"I really appreciate the kindness you're showing, though."
Viretta sighed softly. Iola immediately understood her thoughts.
"So, you're not really interested in mercenary work?"
"Well, as you know, mercenary work isn’t exactly fun or exciting. And Ranken, as soon as he got some money, decided to leave the mercenary life and go study at the academy."
Ranken, as he had mentioned before the hunt, had started preparing for his journey to the academy. He was never a true mercenary, so he left the mercenary corps without any regrets.
Though he hadn’t yet received the profits from his last job, he would be able to cover his tuition and his family’s living expenses.
Having settled his alcoholic father’s and numerous siblings' living expenses all at once, he decided to start a new life.
What do you think?
