Chapter 29 - 29 029 Glowing Brain
Chapter 29: 029 Glowing Brain Chapter 29: 029 Glowing Brain This was Lin An’s first time seeing hallucinations in the mirror when previously he could only see them with his own eyes.
He didn’t know whether it was because he had awakened as a wizard,
or because he had overused his brain to the point of severe dizziness.
He gritted his teeth and took deep breaths, silently admonishing himself that he shouldn’t show any signs of abnormality, no matter the reason.
He could manage that with some grit.
He knew!
Because that’s how he had always gotten through everything!
The only strange thing was the black smoke that rose from his body; he had only seen it on Witch-hunting Knights before, while a wizard’s spirituality seemed to emit a dark golden glow.
What did that represent?
Lin An had no idea; he could only make a note of it.
There were many things he could not write down, choosing instead to bury them at the back of his mind, occasionally sifting through them at lightning speed when his mind was particularly active.
For example, he named his innate ability to let his gaze drift mid-air after awakening his wizard casting powers, “Sky-Drifting Eyes”.
As for the ability to see spiritual hallucinations — whether it was a wizard’s ability, a Witch-hunting Knight’s, or perhaps completely unrelated to either —
because of his spirituality, Ugly Head kept saying that Lin An had stolen his eyes.
He called it the “Soulful Eyes,” which meant both that it was the eye of the head’s spirituality and that it could see others’ spirituality.
With his mind cluttered with thoughts, Lin An grabbed a few tissues to wipe his face before reluctantly leaning against the wall and returning to his office.
Fortunately, his colleagues at the office desks were no longer collective hallucinations of demons and ghosts.
When he got back to his seat, the black cat looked at him strangely.
“Meow?”
— You look a bit strange, as if possessed by something evil that’s also using your body to cast spells.
Lin An was taken aback, then he began to look bemused.
If the black cat was correct, it seemed he had inadvertently used Chen Xinmi’s spirituality to stimulate his brain activity, similar to Chen Xinmi casting spells within him?
He tugged at the corner of his mouth, “It’s not something evil.”
“Meow?”
The black cat approached, its pink nose twitching, and continued miaowing.
— Whatever it is, don’t do it again. External entities releasing witchcraft abilities inside one’s body is too evil, as the Witch-hunting Knights do. It’s really damaging to the spirit!
“What do you mean?” Lin An asked with wide-eyed curiosity.
“Meow~”
— It’s said that Witch-hunting Knights have a way to overcome this kind of backlash, but they only pass it down to the sons and not daughters, and not even to their apprentices. Others are even less likely to know.
“!!!” Lin An raised his eyebrows, “They don’t teach their apprentices either?”
The black cat narrowed its eyes with a look of disgust, “Meow~”
— It’s said that the Witch-hunting Knights’ ‘Knight Apprentices’ are expendable. Those people are rotten to the core! What century is it, and they still cling to such traditions? It’s said if a ‘Knight Apprentice’ wants to learn their true techniques, the only way is to become an in-law!
Well now!
That’s some story!
Lin An listened with interest to these anecdotes, but felt no personal stakes in the matter.
He neither wished to become a wizard nor a Witch-hunting Knight. As he listened to the black cat’s spirit complaining about the Witch-hunting Knights, he simply enjoyed the tale.
Though he had fortuitously learned some breathing technique from the Witch-hunting Knights and awakened a casting ability as a wizard, along with an innate witchcraft skill, he still did not place himself in either of these two ‘professions’.
Yes, he saw them as some sort of ‘career,’ no different from his job change from a programmer to a planner.
In that aspect, he felt somewhat like the young boss.
Both of them disliked the battles and chaos of the supernatural world, focusing only on making money.
Could learning witchcraft help him pay off his mortgage? No, it couldn’t!
But working could.
If only he could get a raise someday.
The thought of a salary increase made Lin An glance at the green shield icon on his computer screen.
Rather than hope for others to value him and give him a raise, it was better to improve himself, to become more valuable.
That way, even if his boss didn’t offer a raise, switching to another company that paid more was still a viable option for a standard working-class individual.
Worker by body, worker by soul.
Lin An’s working-class spirit was reawakened. Since he’d already recorded the black cat’s details and planned to draw them later, he didn’t continue to waste time chatting idly.
However, he wasn’t the type to turn his back on someone who had helped him; when the black cat stuck its head into his arms and nuzzled him, he still freed up his left hand to gently scratch its neck.
Purr purr~~
Miao Miao comfortably squinted its eyes and soon forgot all about the Witch-hunting Knight to the side.
Stroking the cat while at work, this feeling wasn’t bad at all.
However, Lin An still felt dizzy, which made it difficult to get in the zone, so the pace at which he adjusted the green skin of the shield slowed.
Before long, the young boss stormed back into the office, cussing and complaining, “What the hell! I wanted his skills, not to listen to him spout some grand theory on management, huh, even saying that I don’t understand management, such utter bullshit!”
Facing Lin An’s puzzled expression, the secretary shrugged behind the boss’s back.
Clearly, the person who was interviewed today did not meet the boss’s expectations.
The interviewee’s job aspiration was to be an art director, and being well-known for his expertise, he wasn’t the type to gladly give up on his career direction just because the young boss offered a high salary.
Moreover, Antler Software was no longer in its heyday like it had been under the previous boss; the business market is indifferent, caring not for past glories, with everyone being very pragmatic.
The young boss quickly got over his anger, instructed the secretary to tend to her own work, and walked straight to Lin An’s side to look at the shield he was modeling.
His originally somewhat dejected expression instantly turned to amazement, and after a while, he was smacking his lips, looking rather pleased with himself.
“Awesome, with an aesthetic level like this in the art style, am I going to worry about the game not taking off?”
He patted Lin An’s shoulder energetically, “An, don’t worry, I’ll definitely find you a few handy ‘tool people’. Damn it, that guy today was too arrogant, not a good match for you.”
The strength from the young boss’s pat made Lin An feel the pressure; he looked up at him and forced a smile.
“Hiss~”
The young boss leaned back, frowning as he looked at Lin An’s face, “Why do you look more out of it than I do?”
“Ah, no, I mean, how can you be so out of it when I, your boss, am out every day enjoying myself without getting drained like this?”
Lin An pursed his lips, still feeling his head spinning, “Maybe I’m a bit hypoglycemic?”
“I don’t think so!” Muttered the young boss as he thought for a moment, then he quickly walked to a cabinet in the corner of the office and started fiddling with a safe.
It wasn’t long before the safe beeped a few times and clicked open, revealing a pile of documents, stamps, and several elegant boxes inside.
The young boss reached deep inside, pulled out a large, puffy black sealed bag, and then shut the safe with a deft move.
He walked over to Lin An, opened the sealed bag, and took out a walnut directly from it.
A walnut!
Something that looked like it should be a snack was seriously kept in a safe?
But Lin An soon stopped thinking that way.
He witnessed the most magical thing he had ever seen in his life.
Yes, even after experiencing so many spiritual hallucinations and considering himself quite well-informed, he had never seen anything like this.
— Glowing brain nuts!
Complete with little hands and feet!
In the hand of the young boss, each walnut turned transparent in the illusion, with a pair of brain-like white glowing bodies inside.
Those little brains shook their two-centimeter-long limbs and made ‘yiyiyi’ sounds.
With five walnuts, there were ten such little brain beings, which made the moment particularly noisy.
The young boss casually tossed the walnuts onto the desk, quickly resealed the black bag, then picked up another walnut and gave it a hard squeeze.
It was clear that the walnut was quite thick, and the young boss had quite a bit of strength.
As the walnut was crushed, the two little brain beings inside let out screams in unison, shattering into luminous white fragments of various sizes.
“This variety of walnut is a bit bitter, but it’s very effective in relieving fatigue, especially for head-related issues, like headaches, dizziness, or hangovers. You feel the effect just by eating one.”
The young boss picked up a piece of walnut kernel, chewed it, and immediately his face scrunched up in pain like the skin of an orange.
It was obvious he wanted to spit it out, but seemed rather reluctant, so he swallowed it with effort.
Like swallowing medicine.
Seeing Lin An staring blankly at the walnuts, the young boss left the ones he’d crushed on the desk, crushed the other four as well, and then took the bag back to the safe.
“Try it, if you’re sick it’s a remedy, and if you’re not, eating more walnuts is good for the brain anyway.”
Lin An had just seen ten little brain beings crying ‘yiyiyi’ being crushed to death, their screams still ringing in his ears, so he really couldn’t bring himself to eat.
However, the black cat in his arms came over, wanting to eat the walnuts, but, being just a spiritual shadow, it passed right through the computer desk.
The cat twisted its body, meowing discontentedly at the walnuts on the desk.
— I want to eat too, such good stuff, but alas, I can’t eat it, wuu wuu wuu~~~
Lin An hesitated for a moment but eventually picked up a piece of walnut kernel and threw it into his mouth. The bitter taste with a spicy sensation instantly spread from his tongue throughout his mouth.
Oh god, it was so bitter!
But as he chewed slowly, a rich walnut fragrance began to fill his mouth.
Hey, not bad, quite tasty actually.
He hadn’t even finished eating when he suddenly felt refreshed and clear-headed, and just like that, his dizziness was gone.
What do you think?
