Chapter 27 - 27 027 Frog Head and Shield
Chapter 27: 027 Frog Head and Shield Chapter 27: 027 Frog Head and Shield Life is rarely all one wishes it to be.
If external conditions cannot change, one must find a way to adapt to the environment, to change oneself.
Lin An found that after his awakening as a wizard, the effects of using his dark golden spiritual blood became increasingly potent.
His brain operated at a supercharged pace.
Given Mr. Liu’s fondness for making his subordinates work overtime, Lin An might even have his own complete office when he comes to work tomorrow morning.
Which means…
He might have only today to spend time with the black cat!
A day to observe it and achieve a level of understanding sufficient to sketch it down.
Was there enough time?
Lin An didn’t know, but he was willing to try!
After all, the young boss was the son of a Member of the Antler Witch-Hunting Knights, God knows what kind of Witch-hunting Knight skills or knowledge he had; Lin An did not want to draw the spiritual image of Suxin, the female boss of the software company, Chen Xinmi, in the office.
After all, the young boss had seen Chen Xinmi even more often than he had, and he feared he might notice something out of the ordinary.
He could only try to memorize the black cat’s information from thin air, perhaps attempting to complete the drawing of the cat’s tail in his mind.
It was difficult.
And even more challenging was coming up with a solid reason to convince the young boss to let him stay in the office all day long!
After all, the young boss had arranged for a top-notch artist to come for an interview that afternoon, and he had repeatedly said it was to create a support team for Lin An.
In the young boss’s own words, artists wield technology as a tool to create, while Lin An was to treat this artist as a tool for creation.
So it seemed inappropriate for Lin An not to be present.
For the entire morning, he pretended to read while observing everything about the black cat and thinking of solutions all at the same time.
By the time lunch break came around, he had yet to find a suitable solution.
Some people are more composed in the face of big events; Lin An was such a person.
He silently left the software park for lunch outside and didn’t give up thinking about a solution; anxiety solved nothing, and his heart grew calmer.
Eventually, he walked slowly toward the bench by the flowerbeds near the software park’s side gate, remembering how many nights he had spent here waiting for people to disperse, dodging illusions.
However, at this moment, there was obviously an old man sitting there already.
Lin An recognized this person, the father of the owner of a BBQ stall on the food street outside the side gate of the software park.
When colleagues from the office went out for drinks, they often visited this BBQ stall—it was affordable, the ingredients were fresh, and the lady owner was beautiful.
Clearly unable to tolerate the pungent smell of the BBQ stall and disliking the cramped environment in the community apartments, the old man always liked to sit on the street-side bench, reading newspapers and books.
Lin An also knew that this old man’s Visual Illusion was particularly bizarre—a frog with many hands.
The human heart is complex, and not everyone’s spiritual essence takes the form of a simple animal.
Some illusions are more like a hodgepodge of strange things pieced together.
Like the illusion that appeared right now.
A huge Frog Head Monster, with sticky saliva dripping from the oily green corners of the frog’s mouth; underneath the frog head were more than a dozen pale arms covered in claws.
Those dozen arms were raised high, waving at him, involuntarily casting an eerie feeling in one’s heart.
This odd creature floated along in front of him, following him.
Lin An glanced over and found the old man holding a newspaper with great posture, his gaze shifting from the edge of the newspaper towards him.
He used to wonder why the old man always stared at him.
This time, running into him, Lin An simply pulled out his phone, pretending to make a call, and addressed directly to the Frog Head Monster in front of him.
“What do you want to do?”
“Gluglug~” The Frog Head Monster made a strange muffled noise from its mouth as if it were bubbling up from its throat, accompanied by colorful, oily bubbles that appeared at the corner of its mouth and popped into droplets of saliva.
—”Such a healthy body, I want it too, how nice it would be to be you…”
Lin An chuckled lightly, so that was it.
He was about to put away his phone and walk away quickly while looking at the Frog Head Monster in front of him when he suddenly seemed to think of something, his eyes lighting up.
Manipulating the dark golden spiritual blood, he assisted his observation of the frog head in front of him.
Now that Lin An had a plan in mind, he felt much more at ease and replied teasingly to the frog head, “You’ve already been young once, you can’t be greedy.”
The frog head’s bulging mouth had two holes which wobbled along with its breathing, “Gurgle gurgle~~~”
And those dozen or so arms gestured a greeting at Lin An.
——”Ah, I want to suck away your youthful energy, I suck, I suck~~”
Lin An clicked his tongue and looked at the frog, “Your way of greed is pretty ’emo’, isn’t it?”
Realizing its efforts were futile, the frog head stopped its deep breathing in dismay and let its dozen or so arms droop powerlessly, “Gurgle gurgle~~~”
——What a pity…
——I’ve been a law-abiding person all my life, yet I retired along with those who dared to take advantage of everything. Watching them go out to play and even travel abroad, I’m so poor that I can only sit by the roadside and bask in the sun…
——It’s not fair, I have some resentment, I’m very upset!
Lin An raised an eyebrow, “So if you could do it all over again, would you still choose to be law-abiding?”
The frog head, its arms drooping, was silent for a while, then opened and closed its mouth, “Gurgle gurgle~~~”
——Yes, I’m afraid I would still be law-abiding.
Just then, the frog head monster suddenly vanished from in front of him.
Lin An was startled and as he turned his head, he almost burst into laughter.
He saw a long-haired girl in a miniskirt carrying a paper shopping bag passing by, and long before she approached, the strong scent of perfume came wafting over on the breeze.
Wow~
This old man’s heart is still young.
Lin An chuckled and simply took a seat on the edge of a flower bed at the street corner, pretending to continue making a phone call.
As the beauty walked past the corner and disappeared from sight, the frog head monster re-emerged in front of Lin An.
“Tsk~”
Lin An watched the monster with mirth, “Your mentality is still quite young, huh? You’re leaning on a walking stick yet still watching the girls on the street.”
The frog head, somewhat dejected, lifted its numerous arms in a wave, “I can only watch from the street side now. All my savings went into buying my son a house. I only have a little bit left, just barely enough for food and medical expenses for retirement.”
“Wow!”
Lin An arched an eyebrow, “So what else do you want to spend money on?”
The frog head shrank a bit shyly and blinked its huge green eyelids with a touch of sadness, “When you’re old, it’s no use wishing…”
It sighed, “And I’ve been honest and upright all my life. To start getting into those things now, if others found out, wouldn’t they think I’ve always been that kind of person in secret? What would all my lifelong persistence amount to then?”
“That’s true, there’s the cost of sinking a lifetime’s reputation,” Lin An agreed.
A law-abiding old man all his life, yet his heart was filled with turmoil, with a longing for youthful vigor, a desire for beauty, a thirst for money.
And these desires, when faced with reality, were suppressed once more.
Perhaps, apart from Lin An, no one else would ever know how agitated the heart of this white-haired old man truly was.
Everyone has a beast within them, and some choose to lock it away for a lifetime.
The many-armed frog head abruptly disappeared, clearly the old man was no longer looking at Lin An.
“Goodbye.”
Lin An whispered softly, and added, “Thank you.”
Yes, thank you.
He quickly walked back to the company and hurriedly opened the modeling software they had developed. Logging in with the account that had the chief planner privileges given by their ‘little boss’, a vast material library refreshed before him.
He chose a shield with a large leathery surface from it, and as the module opened, he adjusted the effects according to the whole panel of data that popped up on the software.
He simulated the green skin of the frog head onto the surface of the shield.
This was Lin An’s solution. The little boss would definitely choose not to interrupt his own inspiration, leaving Lin An to handle the interview himself.
But he had to act fast, otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to secure more time to observe the black cat.
What do you think?
