Heart-Dao Sovereign

Chapter 2: Return

The frost lay thick on the valley ridge as dawn peeled across the horizon in slow gold. The petals of the Flame Lotus shimmered faintly, no longer wild, but pulsing with a new, tempered energy—resonating with the one who had emerged from death itself.

Within the cave hollowed into the valley wall, Feng Zhen stood in silence.

His robes—stitched from darkened beast hide, reinforced by the essence of the abyss—rested smoothly on his frame. His once-youthful face had sharpened, and his eyes, flecked with silver and violet, now shimmered with the knowledge of someone who had seen the edges of time and clawed back from it.

"My Qi is stable... meridians healed. Core solidified."

He extended his palm. Space folded.

A subtle twist in reality formed around his fingertips, a ripple—soft yet unnatural.

"I can bend the void."

The system pulsed within him like a second heartbeat.

Feng Zhen’s mouth curled upward—half smile, half warning.

Behind him, Xue Lian stirred beneath a layer of robes, her aura no longer chaotic, but steady and refined. The color had returned to her cheeks, and her breathing was smooth. A sharp contrast to the withered state she had been in just days ago.

He didn’t look back. He didn’t need to.

“You’ll break through within the week,” he said, calm and assured.

Her voice followed, soft, uncertain. “Thanks to you…”

She rose, clutching the robe tighter, eyes fixed on his back. “You used me… but you saved me, too.”

Feng Zhen remained quiet. The scroll satchel beside him was full—formation schematics, lost Dao fragments, salvaged recipes, and a single lotus petal preserved in a glass vial: the core of a Flame Lotus that had bloomed the night of their union.

As he moved to leave, her voice caught him again.

“You’re going back?”

He nodded once. “To the world that tried to bury me.”

She stepped forward. “And then?”

He turned his head slightly, his eyes gleaming.

“Then I’ll carve my own path. Through blood. Through desire. Through the Dao.”

Before she could respond, space twisted—and he was gone.

Three days later, the gates of the Golden Azure Sect towered overhead. Ancient and cruel in their elegance, they watched over a courtyard filled with disciples sparring beneath the midday sun.

The clang of blades, the crack of palm strikes, and the jeers of arrogance rang through the air. Among them stood a group of outer disciples—half-trained youths still testing their strength. One, in particular, stood out. A red-robed cultivator with a jade sword, sneering at the girl he’d just knocked to the ground.

“You call that a strike? Even a mortal maid could block that.”

The girl gritted her teeth, wiping blood from her lips. “I’ll challenge you again.”

The red-robed youth laughed. “You’re persistent, if not suicidal.”

Then a pebble struck him square in the shoulder.

He turned sharply. “Who—!?”

A young man stood at the edge of the courtyard, robes black as void, long hair billowing behind him, and a ripple of distortion around his irises.

“You talk too much,” Feng Zhen said simply. “Let’s see if your hands are as sharp as your tongue.”

Murmurs spread.

Who was this?

Didn’t he say... Feng Zhen?

Feng Zhen moved.

Before the red-robed youth could draw his sword, he was already behind him. A twist of the wrist, a sudden pulse of flame, and the boy fell to his knees, choking on ash and disbelief.

From the crowd, a girl stepped forward—an inner disciple by the cut of her robe, her eyes assessing.

“You’re not from here,” she said. “Your movements… spatial displacement?”

Feng Zhen didn’t deny it.

She held out a jade token. “Take this. Pass the Gate Tower trial and earn your place.”

He accepted it, brushing her fingers.

The system chimed.

He turned, voice low. “Time to reclaim what’s mine.”

The Gate Tower rose like a spine of stone and runes, its interior lined with ancient formations meant to test will, heart, and mind. Few passed. Even fewer without injury.

Feng Zhen sat cross-legged inside the center array. Light surged, and the trial began.

Stage One: Flame Illusion.

He stood in fire. His childhood home burned, his father's voice echoed in contempt, his cousin’s laughter rang like daggers.

“You’re a mistake,” the illusion hissed. “A bastard born of a whore and luck.”

Feng Zhen stared through the smoke, unfazed.

“You can’t hurt me with what I’ve already survived.”

He reached out, and the illusion shattered like glass.

[Stage One Passed]

Stage Two: Despair.

He saw a future where he failed. His system turned silent. His lovers abandoned. His enemies victorious.

His breath trembled—but only once. Blood ran down his lip as he bit through the illusion's grip.

“I’ve already walked through death. What’s one more shadow?”

[Stage Two Passed]

Stage Three: Temptation.

He stood on a throne of realms, surrounded by kneeling goddesses, endless power in his grasp. The world was his. His name echoed through eternity.

But the reflection in the mirror... was hollow.

He turned away.

“I don’t need fantasy. I’ll build it myself.”

The tower went silent.

[Stage Three Passed]

Outside, the elders watched in hushed disbelief. The screen showed 100% Dao Resonance Stability. A number not seen in three generations.

One whispered, “This boy… is dangerous.”

Another replied, “He’s something more than that.”

That night, Feng Zhen stood beneath a spirit tree in the Hidden Valley Pavilion, breath steady, Qi calm.

He had passed. He had infiltrated.

And now came the second step.

Footsteps echoed behind him.

“I knew I’d find you again,” said a sultry voice.

From the mist stepped a girl in violet robes, silver-black Qi dancing around her. Twin daggers hung at her waist, but her smile was sharper.

“Ye Ruo,” he greeted, without turning.

“I’ve followed you since the abyss,” she said, stepping close. “You broke me. Now bind me.”

She placed her palm on his chest. “I want the bond. The Heart-Dao ritual. With you.”

The system surged.

His hand rose to her cheek, eyes soft.

“Only if you understand what it means.”

She leaned in, her lips near his ear.

“I’ve never wanted anything more.”

And as the stars turned above them, two hearts reached across the Dao.

A golden lotus bloomed at their feet.
