The arena shifted slightly as handlers moved around, securing the new dragon into place.

The Hungarian Horntail.

Larger. Meaner. And very, very pissed off.

The chains barely held as it thrashed, its spiked tail slamming into the ground. Its yellow eyes locked onto Harry the moment he stepped back into the enclosure.

From the stands, Daphne exhaled sharply. “Well, this one won’t be so easy.”

Tracey, biting her lip, muttered, “No way he’s charming this one.”

Ginny was gripping the railing. “It looks furious.”

And it was.

The Hungarian Horntail let out an ear-splitting roar, sending a jet of flame shooting into the sky. The heat was enough to make the audience pull back, and several students let out startled cries.

Harry, however, remained completely still.

When the Horntail roared and sent a stream of fire straight at him, Harry flicked his wand, diverting the flames to the side like they were nothing more than a mild inconvenience. The dragon snapped its jaws, tail thrashing against the ground as its claws scraped at the dirt.

"Relax," Harry muttered under his breath, already casting his version of Muffliato. The magic settled around them, silencing his voice from anyone else's ears. He switched to Dragontongue. "I'm not after your eggs. That one's fake."

The Horntail let out a warning growl, wings rustling. "Liar. You approach like a thief."

Harry took a slow step forward, not close enough to be a threat, but enough to keep her attention. "If I wanted to steal from you, I wouldn't be standing here talking. I need that golden egg. You can smell it’s different, can't you?"

The Horntail exhaled sharply, the heat washing over him. She glanced at the golden egg nestled among her real ones, pupils narrowing. The scent of the other eggs—her real brood—was distinct. The golden one didn’t carry the same warmth of life.

Her tail coiled slightly, but she didn’t move away. "If it is fake, then leave it. It is mine now."

Harry raised an eyebrow. "You really want some wizard’s bait cluttering your nest?"

The dragon rumbled deep in her throat, claws digging into the dirt as she considered. Around them, the crowd waited, unaware of what was actually happening. From the stands, the students weren’t sure if Harry was stalling, taunting, or just plain suicidal.

Tracey was gripping the railing. “He's going to get himself roasted."

Daphne, sitting beside her, exhaled. “If he was going to die, he wouldn’t be standing that close.”

"Maybe he's trying to get the dragon to surrender?" Neville said.

Theodore shook his head. "That's a Horntail. They don’t surrender."

Harry ignored the noise. The Horntail let out another slow breath, smoke curling from its nostrils. The Dragon scraped her claws against the ground, tail lashing behind her.

Harry pointed toward the castle. "Accio Firebolt."

Gasps rippled through the crowd. Some thought he was summoning a weapon, others assumed he was about to pull off some complicated spellwork. But those who had seen him fly before knew exactly what he was planning.

Above the stands, a distant streak shot across the sky. The Firebolt cut through the air like a comet, whistling as it sped toward him.

The Horntail watched the approaching broom, nostrils flaring. "You think you can outfly me?"

Harry caught the broom with one hand, swinging his leg over it in one smooth motion. "Guess we'll find out."

The moment his feet left the ground, the Horntail roared and launched herself into the air. The force of her wings sent a rush of wind through the arena, knocking dust and debris into the crowd. Students in the front rows flinched as the heat of her last breath still lingered in the air.

McGonagall’s hands were clenched around the railing, her lips pressed into a thin line.

Madame Maxime let out a low whistle. “Mon dieu…” (My god)

Karkaroff looked like he’d swallowed something sour. "This is a circus act, not a proper trial."

Dumbledore merely stroked his beard, watching intently.

Fred Weasley nudged his twin. "Five Sickles says he makes her do a loop before this is over."

George grinned. "I’ll take that bet. He’ll make her chase him into the stands first."

High above, Harry shot forward. The Horntail followed immediately, her massive wings sending powerful gusts through the air. Her spiked tail flicked dangerously behind her.

But she wasn’t faster than him.

Harry dipped low, barely skimming the edge of the arena before shooting upward at a sharp angle. The Horntail twisted her body to follow, her wings angling sharply as she cut through the air. The crowd gasped as the two figures wove around each other—one dark blur, one massive beast, locked in a deadly dance.

"Is he—is he actually racing the dragon?" Lee Jordan’s voice carried over the enchanted speakers, barely hiding his disbelief.

Angelina Johnson, sitting beside him, let out a short laugh. "Wouldn’t be the first time he pulled something insane."

On the ground, Bagman was practically vibrating with excitement. "Absolutely stunning flying! Incredible reflexes! A bold move by our Hogwarts champion!"

Harry rolled to the side as the Horntail snapped at him, her teeth missing him by inches. He adjusted his grip on the broom as he angled toward the open sky. The Horntail gave chase, her roars echoing through the mountains.

The audience wasn’t breathing.

Tracey clutched Daphne’s arm. "This idiot’s actually playing chicken with a dragon."

Daphne’s eyes were fixed on the sky. "And he’s winning."

Harry shifted his weight, twisting into a sharp dive. The Horntail followed, tucking her wings in tight as she pursued. The two of them plummeted toward the arena, the ground rushing up to meet them.

Krum leaned forward, gripping the edge of his seat.

“He’s going to crash,” someone in the stands whispered.

At the last possible second, Harry pulled up. The Firebolt responded instantly, jerking him into a sharp curve that sent him soaring back into the sky.

The Horntail, however, wasn’t as nimble. She tried to adjust, wings flaring wide to slow her descent, but the momentum worked against her. She hit the ground with a bone-rattling impact, dust and debris exploding outward.

The crowd erupted.

She roared in frustration, wings flaring wide as she launched herself into the air again, faster and angrier than before. Her tail whipped violently behind her, slamming into the ground and sending debris flying. The crowd's cheers turned to uneasy murmurs as the Hungarian Horntail ascended, circling high above Harry.

Then, without warning, Harry kicked off the Firebolt.

Gasps rippled through the stands as he shot straight up, the dragon right on his tail. His grip on the broom was loose, guiding it more than holding on. The Horntail wasn’t just chasing him—she was trying to catch him, and the closer he got to the peak of his climb, the more aggressive she became.

From below, Daphne inhaled sharply. "He's going too high."

Tracey’s eyes were wide. "What the hell is he—"

At the very peak of his flight, just as the Horntail reached for him with her massive claws, Harry let go.

The Firebolt shot forward without him.

The crowd screamed.

"He's off the broom!" Lee Jordan’s voice cracked over the enchanted speakers. "He—HE JUMPED!"

The Horntail, however, hadn’t noticed yet. Her focus was locked on the fleeing broom, her instincts latching onto the faster-moving object. With a deafening roar, she twisted in midair and took off after it, her powerful wings carrying her away from Harry.

The entire stadium was in chaos. Students were screaming, McGonagall had bolted to her feet, and Bagman’s mouth was opening and closing like a dying fish.

"Someone get him!" Madame Maxime shouted, already reaching for her wand.

Dumbledore moved. So did Snape, Flitwick, and even Moody. Wands raised, ready to cast some desperate midair rescue—

Harry twisted in the air, flicking his wand downward.

"Spongify."

The ground shimmered.

Then he hit it.

Instead of breaking every bone in his body, he sank.

The stadium fell dead silent.

The Hungarian Horntail, still soaring high above, twisted its head toward the ground after realizing the broom she had been chasing was masterless. A deep growl rumbled from her throat as she spread her wings wide, shifting her trajectory downward.

Harry hit the softened ground, his legs sinking in for half a second before the built-up force shot him back up like a spring. As he rebounded, he snatched the golden egg mid-motion, his downward momentum reversing instantly into an explosive leap. He shot past the Hungarian Horntail, who was still descending, wings flaring in an attempt to slow herself down. Before the dragon could react, Harry twisted in midair, angling his body as he reached out.

His hand caught the Firebolt’s handle.

The crowd erupted in  cheers and outright disbelief as Harry swung his legs over the broom, adjusting his grip smoothly. The Horntail, realizing she had been outmaneuvered, let out a furious snarl, twisting her body to pursue him again.

Harry wasn’t having it.

He yanked the broom hard to the left, skimming just above the ground before shooting straight up again. The Horntail tried to follow, but she was already too low, her own weight working against her. The second she flared her wings to gain altitude, she stalled slightly, giving Harry the opening he needed.

He shot past her again, so close he could’ve reached out and touched one of the massive spikes along her tail.

Then he was clear.

Golden egg in hand, Harry dove toward the designated finish line, the roars of the audience barely registering. He landed with a sharp halt, dirt kicking up around him as he dismounted. His grip on the egg was firm, but otherwise, he looked completely untouched.

The crowd wasn’t sure whether to keep cheering or just process what the hell they just watched.

The Horntail let out one last furious screech before landing heavily on her original nest, wings folding back as she huffed out smoke. The handlers were already moving in, though with far more caution than before.

From the judges' box, Ludo Bagman was losing his mind. “ABSOLUTELY STUNNING! INCREDIBLE! I HAVE NEVER—LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, GIVE IT UP FOR YOUR HOGWARTS CHAMPION—TWICE OVER—HARRY POTTER!”
