Good Man Operation Guide

Chapter 172: Apocalypse: Zombie Era (11)

In a short period of time, the once spacious main road was filled with wild grass. Although this area wasn’t within the designated safe zone of the base, there were still a few scattered zombies walking in the overgrown grass.

Now, most of their rotting flesh had already fallen off, and they were exposed to sunlight all day long. The remaining skin on their bodies had turned black and shriveled. Because of this, most zombies were as thin as sticks, blending into the overgrown grass, moving slowly. If one wasn’t careful, they would be difficult to spot.

“Bang!”

During this silence, a gunshot suddenly rang out in the distance. The slow and stiff zombies immediately raised their heads upon hearing the sound. It was as if they had been injected with chicken blood, rushing through the grass towards the source of the noise.

Their commotion disturbed the rabbits that were originally quiet in the bushes. Although these zombies didn’t eat any creatures other than humans, it still annoyed the rabbits, causing them to jump up in dissatisfaction and kick the zombies that had disturbed them.

These rabbits were about half the height of a person, with large bodies. With a single kick, they could directly crush a zombie’s skull. When one zombie fell, the remaining zombies didn’t even notice the commotion around them. They continued forward, covered in black flesh, heading in the same direction.

Since the apocalypse, all creatures in the world had evolved. Flying in the sky, walking on land, swimming in water—compared to them, humans, who occasionally possessed abilities, had suddenly fallen from the top of the food chain.

If they ate animals, they couldn’t overpower them. If they ate plants, the plants grew taller than humans and possessed various special abilities. Either they were poisonous upon contact or shot seeds like bullets before anyone got close. Moreover, some plants directly attracted passing humans or animals, entwining them while alive, dragging them underground, treating them as fertilizer and nourishment.

In addition, there were zombies, which didn’t eat anything other than humans and spread the infection. Humans were surrounded and outnumbered, making it a brutal situation.

No matter how brutal it was, humans still had to survive. After the death of a group of people, the major bases were quickly established, and rules and regulations were rapidly perfected. When things calmed down, someone accidentally discovered that the crystal nucleus inside a zombie’s head could enhance abilities. Some of the ability users who originally intended to stay in the base and rely on their identities had no choice but to go out and kill zombies to find resources, trying to upgrade themselves.

When the gunshot rang out, Ji Hang was ambushing along with a small team, preparing to capture two rabbits and bring them back. In this territory with abundant grass and many rabbits, those two rabbits meant a considerable amount of meat. Selling them could exchange for a lot of rations.

They were lying in ambush when they heard the gunshot. The short-haired woman beside them, holding a longbow and squinting her eyes at the distant rabbits, instantly darkened her face and muttered, “Damn it!”

Before she could finish cursing, she quickly put away her weapon and told the people beside her, “Hurry, let’s go!”

The group of people had fought their way up together, and upon hearing her command, they immediately obediently retreated to the car. Ji Hang was a bit slower in his movements, but he exerted all his strength to run towards the car, afraid that if he ran even a second slower, he would be left behind.

This kind of thing had happened before. In a life-or-death situation, no one would pay attention to an ordinary teammate.

Once they were in the car, the short-haired woman frowned and looked at the swaying grass where the zombies ran, gritting her teeth and saying, “Drive faster!”

“Damn, who the hell is stupid enough to shoot in a place like this, without even using a silencer!”

“It wouldn’t be someone from the base, maybe it’s someone from a nearby settlement. Damn it, they’ve brought trouble upon us!"

Ever since the base discovered that zombies were sensitive to sound, they almost wanted to distribute flyers to inform everyone in the base about this. Even children knew that they must not make loud noises to attract the attention of zombies. The members of the team spoke in hushed tones, afraid of disturbing the zombies in the distance. Unexpectedly, they encountered someone who didn’t understand the rules.

“Enough, stop talking!”

The short-haired woman impatiently interrupted her subordinate. She had an ordinary appearance, with a grim scar on her face. It was said that she was scratched by a zombie, but she didn’t awaken as a zombie. Instead, she awakened an ability.

Ji Hang was able to join this team all thanks to her.

After hearing Ji Jiaqi's words, Bai Yu unexpectedly turned cold, refusing to listen to him and insisting on waiting for him to rescue her at that store. It just so happened that when the two were arguing, Bai Yu's father’s friend came to the store. This uncle had some status in the base and helped them out of the situation. However, Bai Yu and Ji Hang also went their separate ways after that.

Ji Hang had always been well protected before, but suddenly he was asked to live on his own. He couldn’t even kill a zombie.

In the end, he had no choice but to grit his teeth and find work in the base. Luckily, he looked decent, and after going through hardships, he finally joined this team led by the woman.

Although this woman was ugly and not gentle, she was already a Level 2 ability user. Being with her made Ji Hang’s life much better. However, what dissatisfied Ji Hang was that this woman didn’t like men who hid inside the house. Moreover, her attitude towards him seemed more like that of a pet than a boyfriend. In order to please her, he had to accompany her every time she went out.

Never did he expect to be so unlucky that he encountered a trigger-happy fool after going out just a few times.

Now, he didn’t know if he could escape.

While Ji Hang was thinking about it, the driver suddenly said, “Big Sister, there’s another car ahead. Should we join forces?”

The other car was in front, and the gunshots were behind. It definitely wasn’t that trigger-happy fool. The short-haired woman immediately said, “Let’s join forces."

They were currently in the wilderness, with wild grass everywhere. No one knew if a zombie would suddenly appear. It was better to stick together with other humans.

The other car also noticed the intention of the car behind and didn’t reject the idea. They formed a convoy through this wilderness.

When they were no longer followed by zombies, the two cars stopped one after the other.

Relieved that they were finally safe, Ji Hang, who had been holding his breath, quickly comforted the short-haired woman gently, “It’s okay now, don’t worry.”

The short-haired woman impatiently furrowed her brows and shook off his hand.

“Do you think I’m a 3-year-old that needs to be pacified? What’s there to be afraid of being chased by a few zombies?”

“Park and regroup. Ji Hang, go cook.”

Since Ji Hang was the only one in the team who couldn’t fight, cooking naturally fell to him.

He always felt that as a man, he shouldn’t be cooking. Now he was forced to cook and had to put on a smiling face. He didn’t know how much he hated it in his heart, but on the surface, he had to obediently get out of the car and leave to cook.

The car in front seemed to be also regrouping, but they didn’t send anyone over, so naturally, they wouldn’t go over either. When away from home, even though they were together, everyone remained cautious of each other.

Once the meal was ready, Ji Hang, who hardly contributed, was given a bowl of plain porridge.

It was plain, as plain as it could be.

As the team leader, the short-haired woman had a small piece of cured meat to eat, but she didn’t even think about sharing it with Ji Hang. She enjoyed it by herself.

Ji Hang could only hold the bowl of plain porridge and drink it with humiliation.

As he drank, he suddenly caught a whiff of a fragrance in the air.

A soy sauce aroma, like beef with soy sauce, with a hint of spiciness. Just smelling it made his mouth water.

Ji Hang was drooling with envy and couldn’t help but look in the direction of the car in front. There, he saw a young boy wearing a hat sitting at the front of the car, shaking his legs and enjoying his meal.

He had a decent appearance, fair skin, looked a bit thin, and seemed young. He didn’t look like someone who could fight zombies, yet he was eating better than Ji Hang.

Ji Hang’s emotions were mixed. The short-haired woman beside him was quite interested in the boy and said, “That kid is quite good-looking. It would be nice if he followed me.”

The implication in her words was that she was interested in him.

Just as they were talking, another person came down from the car, and it was a familiar figure to Ji Hang.

Ji Jiaqi was wearing her combat outfit and placed a large piece of meat that she picked up with his chopsticks into Lin Shiheng’s bowl. Her face was filled with a motherly smile, “Heng Heng, eat more.”

Lin Shiheng nodded and quickly ate the piece of meat, smacking his lips, “I still want to eat.”

“I have more, I have more!!"

Suddenly, Gu Chengbei stuck his head out of the car window and gave his meat to Lin Shiheng, saying, “You eat mine. Mine tastes good.”

Since the last conversation with Ji Jiaqi, the eternal otaku Gu Chengbei had been feeling a bit of spring in his heart. Of course, he would dote on his future “stepson” and wished he could provide for him.

Ji Hang, watching this scene, felt almost infuriated. Seeing Ji Jiaqi again, living so comfortably, had already made him feel annoyed. And now, only a short time after their breakup, Ji Jiaqi was being so good to another man.

Looking at the plain porridge in his bowl and then at the meat in Lin Shiheng’s bowl, Ji Hang was so angry that he couldn’t even drink the porridge. He saw the short-haired woman beside him staring at Lin Shiheng without blinking, as if she really liked him, which made him even angrier.

“What’s he doing? A freeloader who relies on his looks!”

The short-haired woman turned her head in surprise and looked at Ji Hang.

“Aren’t you also freeloading off me with your looks?”

“If it weren’t for my face, with your useless self, who would care about you?”
