Good Man Operation Guide

Chapter 169: Apocalypse: Zombie Era (8)

In the third month after the apocalypse, on the desolate road that had turned barren in just three months, a visibly modified car drove by. As it passed a few scattered zombies, an arrow would shoot out from the car, sending them to their demise.

Inside the car, Ge Chengbei immediately applauded with a set of praises and applause, saying, “Yue Yue, you’re amazing!!”

Cheng Yue put away her bow, her pitch-black eyes gazing outside the window. Her voice was cold and deliberately lowered. She said, “The number of zombies is decreasing, and the road has been cleared by people.”

“Yeah,” Ge Chengbei also noticed. He immediately turned around and took out his precious computer. After some typing, he looked at the icons on the screen, and a hint of relief appeared in his eyes.

“It seems we are approaching the Flame Base.”

When they were leaving the building, Ji Jiaqi discovered her spatial ability, so she packed everything inside it, including the radio.

During this period, the radio had been with Ge Chengbei, and they listened to the sounds from it intermittently. The Flame Base was one of the places that had emitted sounds from the radio, indicating that it was a large base with powerful abilities and many residences. There were usually soldiers guarding it, welcoming the arrival of survivors.

In the apocalypse, the scene described by the Flame Base was still very attractive. If others heard it, they would definitely rush over here seeking shelter. However, they weren’t in a hurry.

After all, Ji Jiaqi could store things in her space, and Cheng Yue, who had a water-based ability, could provide water at any time. Later, they found an ownerless RV on the road and refurbished it. Now it was spacious enough with compartments, and there were no problems with food and drink. During rest, they had Ge Chengbei’s automatic alarm system. If there was any danger, with Ji Jiaqi’s knife skills, Cheng Yue’s archery, and Ge Chengbei’s robots they could easily deal with it. It was safe to say they were well-protected.

When they found the Flame Base, Ge Chengbei was somewhat reluctant to enter the base, but Ji Jiaqi didn’t mind. Whether it was inside or outside the base, she could take care of herself and those around her.

Cheng Yue, on the other hand, strongly agreed to go to the Flame Base. She knew why Ge Chengbei was reluctant to enter the base. In her previous life, there were rumors that Ge Chengbei, despite his formidable strength, remained at home every day and focused on research because he was backstabbed by a loved one before the apocalypse. Although he was unharmed later on, it had developed his aversion to stepping into society.

He had no problem interacting with one or two people, but he would become mentally tense when there were more people around.

Cheng Yue's character was formed after the apocalypse. She didn’t think much of Ge Chengbei’s quirk. After all, she had encountered many people with various quirks in her previous life.

As long as Ge Chengbei didn’t harm her sister and Heng Heng, she didn’t care.

As they were nearing the Flame Base, Ji Jiaqi began to take things out from her space. After discussing it, they decided to keep their abilities hidden and give the impression that they had no spatial abilities throughout the journey. They had encountered some ability users along the way, but most of them had water, fire, lightning, earth superhuman abilities, and none of them had encountered Ge Chengbei’s ability to control robots or Ji Jiaqi’s spatial ability.

Since they were unsure about the situation at the Flame Base, after the three of them discussed, they started putting daily necessities in various corners of the car, creating an illusion that they didn’t have any spatial abilities.

Cheng Yue was young, and both adults didn’t allow her to carry things. She held Heng Heng the cat and stood aside. When she saw Ji Jiaqi carrying two bags of rice and wondering where to put them, Cheng Yue’s eyes sparkled, and she spoke up, saying, “Sister, just put one bag.”

Ji Jiaqi didn’t think much about it and followed her suggestion, putting one bag of rice back into the space.

After making sure everything was settled, the vehicle finally slowed down at the entrance of the Flame Base.

As expected, there were soldiers standing at the entrance, just like the broadcast had mentioned. Upon seeing the vehicle, a group of people immediately approached, and the one in the lead said, “Show me your identification.”

Ge Chengbei became nervous as soon as he saw so many people. He stiffened and retreated. Cheng Yue, being a child in her previous life, wasn’t expected to step forward in such a situation. So, Ji Jiaqi stepped forward in the end.

She put on a smile on her face and said, “Gentlemen, what identification? We’re just passing through and wanted to replenish some supplies here.”

Ji Jiaqi had a good appearance, and there weren’t many people in the post-apocalyptic world who had such fair and radiant skin with a cheerful smile. The man in charge softened his expression upon seeing her smile and said, “You're not from our base? Then go to that table over there and go through the procedures.”

“Our base has a rule that incoming people must contribute half of their supplies to enter. It can be water, food, oil, and so on. Weapons aren’t required, but if they have their eyes on any clothes, as long as they aren’t being worn, they can take them.”

The last sentence was a reminder to Ji Jiaqi to wear any clothes she liked on her body. Ji Jiaqi wasn’t a fool, and she immediately expressed her gratitude with a smile. She even took out a pack of cigarettes from her bag and handed it over.

“Thank you so much, gentlemen. We found these cigarettes in a supermarket, but none of us smoke. Please take them.”

The man’s eyes lit up when he saw the cigarettes. He didn’t refuse and happily accepted them. He also added a piece of advice, saying, “When you hand over your supplies later, be generous. There are some ability users sitting over there. If you don’t give them a satisfactory offering, they won’t do anything to you openly, but once you enter the base, be prepared to be deceived by them.”

“Hey, thanks, Big Brother. We’ll head over first.”

Once Ji Jiaqi got on the car, Cheng Yue, who had been keeping a close eye on her side, ready to use her ability to kill any danger that arose, finally relaxed. She sat down, gently stroking the cat in her arms.

Ge Chengbei immediately started with flattery, “Sister Ji, I truly admire you. You’re not only skilled at killing zombies but also great at socializing.”

Ji Jiaqi smiled shyly, “It was out of necessity. When I first entered society, I faced a lot of hardships because I didn’t know how to interact with people. It wasn’t until later that things got better.”

In fact, strictly speaking, she had learned to put on a smiling face during her school days. At that time, she and Ji Hang worked part-time jobs together. Being young and without qualifications, they could only work on Saturdays and Sundays, distributing flyers on the streets.

Ji Hang had a sense of pride and felt embarrassed about it, so one time when someone passing by expressed annoyance, he got into an argument with them and quit his job.

At that time, their living expenses were barely enough. Ji Jiaqi had no choice but to work even harder to keep the job. Eventually, she learned to ignore the cold faces of passersby and put on a sunny smile for everyone, allowing them to take her flyers.

Thinking back to the past, Ji Jiaqi sighed. In fact, growing up early was a good thing for her. Their mutual friend had once said that Ji Hang would face some hardships when he entered society, but unfortunately, they hadn’t seen that yet before the apocalypse arrived.

After filling out the form, without any resistance, they let the people take away half of their belongings. The group of people then gave them their identity cards and entered the city.

Upon entering, they realized that it was relatively prosperous inside, with clothes and weapons being sold in various shops.

After looking around, they found that weapons were the most popular items, while jewelry and precious metals were the least favored. This was normal since everyone was living on the edge, and no one was in the mood to buy decorative items.

They rented a room, stored their supplies, and parked the car in the courtyard before becoming interested in exploring the city.

Ge Chengbei, the first flatterer who still continued his sycophantic behavior despite discovering his mechanical ability, immediately suggested, “On this journey, we’ve been focused on finding food and haven’t really looked for clothes. Why don’t we go check out the clothes? I just saw some clothes that seemed to be modified, making them convenient for killing zombies.”

Ji Jiaqi also noticed those clothes and had the intention to buy a few sets. Cheng Yue was in the stage of growing, so it was especially important to buy more.

The group then found a shop with a storefront, guarded by a few ability users outside, indicating that it was a clothing store with connections.

As they were browsing inside, a few more people entered the base gate. The couple at the front caught their attention. The man had a decent appearance, albeit a bit tired-looking. His clothes were clean, and his face was fair. He was currently speaking to a beautiful girl standing beside him, “Those people really have no vision. They actually wanted to take away half of our supplies.”

“There’s nothing we can do. It’s the rule. Brother Hang, you were too reckless just now. What if we offend them by arguing?” the girl responded.

Ji Hang smiled gently at her, “It’s okay. They’re just a few watchdogs, not important figures. If we offend them, so be it.”

The girl blushed under his gaze and lowered her head shyly, “We’re not familiar with this place. How about finding a guide to save us some detours?"

“Sure.”

Ji Hang’s gaze towards her became increasingly affectionate.

It wouldn’t do to lack affection. After the apocalypse, he was trapped in the dormitory. Although no one in the dormitory escaped unscathed, he later suffered from hunger and thirst. Luckily, the person he had an affair with before the apocalypse came from a well-connected family and sent someone to rescue her. And she insisted on finding Ji Hang, otherwise, his life might not have been spared.

Throughout the journey, Ji Hang relied on her as a bodyguard by his side. He didn’t even dare to leave the car. Now that they had finally reached a safe base, he definitely needed a good rest.

Detecting the unpleasant odor emanating from his body due to prolonged lack of hygiene, Ji Hang’s eyes showed a hint of disgust as he asked the guide who was called over, “Are there any clothing stores nearby?”

The guide casually glanced back at the few people standing at the base gate and respectfully replied, “Yes, there are.”

“I’ll take you there.”

Daring to offend their boss, I'll take them to the most expensive store. If he didn't rip them off, it would be strange!

He had ulterior motives, but his mouth never stopped. He kept rambling about the things inside the base along the way.

“Actually, nowadays, it’s really rare to see people like you two who can afford clothes. Look, everyone we passed on the way here is all dirty and unkempt. The people who can afford clothes, especially women, either have their own abilities or come from influential backgrounds. Look at that woman ahead...”

He pointed at a clean and decent-looking woman and chuckled, “She’s being kept, that’s why she has money to buy clothes.”

Seeing Ji Hang’s contemptuous expression, he lowered his gaze and sneered.

This woman was the leader of a powerful team in the base, with earth-based abilities. She couldn’t stand others commenting on her appearance. He just mentioned it casually; if these people provoked her, it would be their own fault.

The group soon arrived at the store. Upon entering, Ji Hang immediately spotted a familiar figure.

Ji Jiaqi had a rosy complexion and looked refreshed. She was holding a piece of clothing and gesturing with it on her body, showing no signs of having suffered.

He knew what kind of person Ji Jiaqi was—timid, incompetent, always smiling and trying to please others. Her grades in school weren’t as good as his.

Back when they were trapped in the dormitory, he had wondered what would happen to her. She would either turn into a zombie or be trapped and die inside. After all, with her timid nature, she definitely wouldn’t dare to kill zombies. It was just a pity for all that food.

Unexpectedly, he now encountered her here.

Ji Hang’s initial reaction was that Ji Jiaqi had been kept by someone. Instantly, a sense of resentment appeared on his face.

How could she have so little self-respect!
