Chapter 882: A Fleeting Feeling.
The soles of his boots scraping the floor, Cain limped out of the building.
His face was lit up by the crimson light.
He looked up just in time to see it...
A burning streak falling from the sky.
With a thud, it smacked into the ground.
Alongside all the other human corpses.
Gritting his teeth, Cain slowly limsoed over, coming to a stop right above the body that had fallen from the sky.
His eyes widened.
Legarde was in terrible shape. The chest piece was twisted like scrap metal. Looking in, Cain could see pieces of his organs hanging out of the broken metal, some parts in various stages of decay.
"Damn. Well, this is embarrassing, isn't it?"
Hearing Legarde speak in such a weak voice, Cain had no idea what to feel.
He sighed and knelt down into the puddle of blood and mud. He gripped the old warrior's hand tight,
"Do you still have some fight in you?"
Legarde chuckled and shook his head,
"I'm done. This is where I go out, kid."
Cain knew that was true. He had just tried using {Blood Regeneration} on him, and while the spell had worked, it unfortunately could not dispell the rot that had already enveloped all his organs.
Cain gritted his teeth,
'Should I try sealing the spell? No, it won't work. I'll just end up killing him instead.'
Legarde raised a brow,
"What the hell are you doing, kid?"
Cain frowned, "What does it look like I'm doing? What, you think you get to be a martyr now?"
Legarde chuckled. A stream of blackened blood seeped out from the side of his mouth.
"No, that's not it. I just know when to stop."
The oldan sighed then let his head fall.
He looked around.
Most of the corpses surrounding him were human corpses, both of ordinary mundane people and the fighters.
It was a terrible scene. Most, if not all the corpses were not left whole, with some of them even having huge chunks mission.
The sky and the earth was red, slick with blood.
"This world... is slowly becoming hell. To be honest with you, I am a bit relieved I won't be here anymore. Call me a coward, but I don't envy you one bit. Maybe where I'm headed will be better."
He stared up at Cain. Cain's eyes widened as he felt Legarde grip his hand tighter,
"The Devils are slowly becoming more and more powerful. Their numbers also keep growing. Very soon, this city, and possibly, this world will be overrun and devoured by them.x
A grim smile stretched across his face, his teeth black with his own blood,
"If you don't want to end up like me, kid, don't be a savior. Survive. Even if you end up sacrificing yourself, it won't be worth it in the end. Because you'll be dead by the end of it, after all."
Retching violently, Legarde threw up a copious amount of black blood that emitted a putrid stench.
Breathing heavily, he leaned on the corpse behind him.
He chuckled, "Damn it. Although I look pathetic now, you should have seen me kid. I gave that bastard a sure ass whooping."
Cain nodded, "I'm sure you did."
Tears of blood flowing down the sides of his face, Legarde reached his hand to the sky, his heart beating through his broken breastplate.
A flurry of sparks appeared in his hand and a pristine, beautiful looking spear appeared in his hand.
It was the {Salamander's Maw}.
"Here. I want you to have this. Tell Mira not to be sad. Tell that bastard, Julio to grow some balls while you're at it."
Cain felt a sinking feeling in his chest. It was annoying, like something had wormed its way into his body and there was no way to get rid of it.
Still, he picked the spear up and placed it into his inventory.
Seeing this, Legarde cackled,
"Good. Now get going, kid. That monster is coming."
"It is already too late for that."
Cain looked up.
A terrifying looking Devil slowly flew down.
He rode upon a harrowing undead pegasus. The eyes of the rotting steed were a ghastly green, and staring into them could make a man wet himself with fear.
Above the Devil and his tenebrous steed was an enormous bone serpent that swirled in the sky.
Legarde struggled to sit up as he summoned another spear,
"Get going, Cain. I'll hold him off."
The Devil seated upon the rotting steed spoke coldly,
"Run? Run where?"
The skies were immediately covered with them.
Hundreds upon hundreds of {Sky Devils} swarmed the air.
The earth trembled as well as thousands of Devils rushed forward.
The building behind them had finally reduced to rubble as well.
Seeing this, Obegrin's face turned grim.
He looked down at the two humans below.
'It's him.'
He pointed his spear and spat coldly,
"You aren't going anywhere."
Seeing this, Legarde began summoning all his strength for one last push. Just enough to buy Cain some time.
Cain suddenly let out a sigh.
He looked up at Obegrin, his expression unreadable,
"You... You were there the last time I died."
Obegrin raised a brow.
Suddenly his eyes widened,
"You are that human Inixth killed."
Cain turned to face Legarde. A complicated smile was on his lips.
"You said I have a god-complex. That I should give up on trying to be a savior because it will end up with me killed."
Legarde threw up another mouthful of black blood again as he fell to his knees. He finally couldn't fight it anymore.
"Then what if I couldn't die?"
As the life faded away from him, all he could see was Cain's solidary back.
He stood there, facing an entire host of Devils, his back as straight as a sword, his will burning like the blazing sun, pushing the darkness of night away.
It was awe-inspiring.
He couldn't help but chuckle to himself.
'I see. I was wrong.'
'This is no god-complex. This is insanity.'
He looked towards the sky,
'But then again, I suppose you have to be insane to...'
With that, the crimson warrior breathed his last.
Cain's face fell.
The light of life had vanished.
The flame had been extinguished.
Saying a silent prayer, Cain turned to the Devil flying overhead,
"You monsters are really starting to get on my nerves."
Obegrin's expression was terrifying,
"You will come back with me willing. If you resist, I have many ways to take you in pieces."
Legarde's corpse, despite being fresh, was already emitting a putrid stench.
Cain's eyes widened. The nauseating feeling welling in his chest threatened to overflow.
The overwhelming stench of blood and rot.
His fingertips went cold.
His chest tightened.
'Ah, what is this feeling...'
He looked up.
Despite killing so many Devils, even more were on their way. Soon, the entire place would be overrun by them.
And there was nothing he could do to stop it.
But Cain, he had no intention to stop anything.
He finally recognized the feeling welling up in his chest.
It was rage.
But it was cold, not burning hot, filled with malice and dark intent.
Sensing something changing, Obegrin barked out,
"Cast a warding spell! He's trying to escape with spatial magic."
Cain's face was dark as he changed under his breath.
Obegrin's grin was dark.
Any human that showed promise had to be eliminated as soon as possible.
Although Devils could eventually corrupt and destroy entire worlds, there has been cases where the invaded world fostered inhabitants that would fight back to the bitter end, ultimately resisting and foiling the Devilish Invasion.
While it was not common, it had happened far too many times for it not to be a concern. Although humans were a weak species, they were also known for having more than a few surprises amongst them.
'Just to make sure, I will squash you out now. Out of necessity.' Obegrin thought to himself.
Now that the space warding spells had been set up, there as no way the human would be able to escape using his spatial spells.
That was certainly how it seemed.
However, Cain...
He had no intentions of running yet.
"Golden Wyrm: Asura."
The power of a Demon, creatures conceived of devilish blood and power since the ancient times was truly terrifying.
Abhorrent abnormalities. Creatures of light and darkness. Strange existences.
Cain spat out a white stream of foggy air.
His horns elongated his irises turned into golden slits. His claws grew longer, harder and sharper.
His armor had been damaged so he had dismissed it. Now, covering his flesh was a layer of hard, black gold scales.
Obegrin sneered,
"So you want to fight. Fine. I will bring you in pieces."
Suddenly, Cain stopped chanting.
"Open."
Feeling a terrible premonition, Obegrin commanded the {Bone Serpent} and the {Acid Crane} to charge down.
Both undead fiends opened their maws.
"Supernova." Cain whispered.
The sky overhead rumbled.
A magic circle manifested into existence in a split second.
Obegrin looked up.
From the magic circle, a star was birthed.
A dark star.
Burning in the night sky, it radiated an intense heat and darkness simultaneously, bathing the world in its tenebrous light.
Even the crimson moonlight was overshadowed by it.
"No!" Obegrin roared.
There was a flash of light.
And then, the dark star exploded.
What do you think?
