The hum of the gaming capsule filled the small, dimly lit room. Its sleek, futuristic design stood in sharp contrast to the peeling wallpaper and cluttered desk in the corner. Kael Vaughn stared at it, his fingers hovering over the control panel, hesitant. This was it—the moment he had been waiting for.
In the real world, he was trapped. His legs had failed him long ago, and with them, so had his freedom. Every day blurred into the next, a cycle of doctor visits, online classes, and the ever-present weight of limitations pressing down on him. He had long since accepted that he would never run, never fight, never experience the thrill of movement again.
But inside Eternal Dominion Online, none of that mattered.
Taking a deep breath, Kael pressed the activation button. The capsule whirred to life, and a smooth female AI voice greeted him.
“Welcome to the Eternal Dominion Nexus. Please lie back and relax. Synchronization commencing.”
He settled into the padded interior as a cool sensation spread from the back of his head, washing over his body. His vision blurred, then darkened, as the real world faded away.
Then, light.
Kael opened his eyes to find himself standing in a vast, open space filled with swirling constellations. The Character Creation menu materialized before him, glowing letters floating in the void. A reflection of his current self hovered before him—a frail body, dull eyes, slouched shoulders.
Not anymore.
He reached out, selecting his class. Swordsman. A balanced choice, strong in combat with room to grow. The moment he confirmed his selection, his reflection morphed. His posture straightened, his limbs filled out with muscle, and his eyes burned with new life. A set of simple but sturdy armor covered his body, and at his hip hung a sleek, iron-forged blade.
For the first time in years, Kael stood tall.
“Welcome, player,” the AI intoned. “You are now entering Eternal Dominion Online.”
The world around him shattered like glass, and he fell forward into the unknown.
A moment later, he landed with both feet firmly on solid ground.
For the first time in years, he wasn’t sitting.
He was standing.
What do you think?
