Chapter 298: An Unfortunate Incident
Thirty minutes later, when Amelia and Maria arrived at the Viva Life Clinic, they were greeted by the blaring sound of an ambulance siren parked in front of the hospital entrance.
Amelia watched in shock as a team of doctors and nurses rushed out of the hospital with a stretcher bed, while a man jumped out of the ambulance, looking completely disoriented and shaken.
"She's not breathing... They have done everything but she's not breathing... My wife ...our child... Please help me." The man, whose hands and body were covered with blood, cried to the doctors as they tried to bring out the unconscious patient from the ambulance.
"Please sir, put yourself together and let us do our job." One of the nurses reprimanded harshly while the other nurses and doctor brought down an unconscious heavily pregnant woman.
"Oh god!" Amelia cupped her mouth with both trembling hands at the sight of the heavenly pregnant woman whose long maternity dress was covered in her blood.
One side of her head was fractured and one of her arms seemed twisted.
Amelia didn't need a soothsayer to tell her that this woman was gone. But then miracles do happen.
"What could have happened to her?" Amelia's whole body shook, tears already gathering at the corner of her eyes.
"She looks like an accident victim," Maria whispered to her daughter-in-law, equally shocked by the horrific sight.
"Ma'am, do you want us to go back," Pascal suggested, sensing the hesitation in Amelia's steps and the chaos in front of them.
"No..." Amelia gulped down the tension in her voice, wiping the tears that had already escaped her eyes.
She didn't know this unfortunate couple from Adams but she was greatly moved by their plight.
Taking a deep breath and exhaling through her mouth to calm her pounding heart, Amelia said in a determined voice.
"Let's go inside."
"Are you sure?" Maria hesitated already traumatized by the horrific sight of the unconscious pregnant woman.
Amelia placed her trembling hands on Maria's arm and nodded slowly.
"Yes, mom."
They both held onto each other for support as they made their way into the hospital building.
The lobby was a whirlwind of activity, with hurried footsteps, hushed whispers and beeping sounds of machines.
The air was thick with a mixture of anticipation and anxiety as some team of doctors dressed in their white lab coats, hurried towards the theatre to perform an emergency operation.
Amongst this team of doctors, Amelia spotted Dr Vanessa, who seemed to lead the group.
"Amy, isn't that the doctor you are meant to see." Maria queried, also spotting the doctor.
"Yes, she is," Amelia replied, her heart still drumming loudly as she inwardly prayed for the unconscious pregnant woman and her child battling for their lives.
"This is an emergency situation. I don't think she will be able to see us today. Maybe we should go back and check back tomorrow." Maria sighed, holding onto her daughter-in-law protectively.
"But I already called her earlier and she is expecting me." Amelia's brows furrowed. "Let me just speak with the receptionist first before I decide on what to do next."
"Okay."
Inhaling and exhaling to push out all her anxiety, Amelia slowly made her way to the receptionist's desk.
"Hello."
"Good afternoon ma'am. How may I help you?" The slightly rattled female receptionist nurse asked in a polite voice.
"I have an appointment with Dr Vanessa for 2:00 PM. But I think I just saw her go into the theatre room. I wanted to know if I could reschedule for tomorrow same time."
"Please hold on, ma'am, while I contact Dr Vanessa's secretary."
"Okay." Amelia plastered a smile on her saddened face as she watched the nurse dial another number on her intercom.
Just then, a red hair pregnant woman came up to the receptionist's desk sobbing and sniffing.
Amelia tilted her head sideways to look at the pregnant woman, her heart moved by her tears. She was tempted to ask if the woman was alright but the second receptionist nurse beat her to it.
"Good afternoon ma'am. Are you all right?"
The crying lady shook her head, more tears streaming down her reddened face and her body trembling.
"Are you in pain? Do you want me to call the doctor?" The second receptionist nurse asked patiently, moving away from her desk and coming around to stand by the crying woman.
Amelia's attention was divided as she tried listening to what the first receptionist nurse was saying over the phone while worrying about the second pregnant woman.
"I was there. I saw everything. It was horrible. The driver was drunk. He didn't stop. He didn't look back. He didn't help. He just took an Innocent woman's life and that of her child. How could people be so wicked?" The red-haired woman cried harder, evoking an overwhelming emotion of pain and anger in Amelia.
"Did you see the face of the driver?" Amelia heard herself asking, forgetting the reason why she was there.
"No..." The redhead woman wept bitterly, attracting a lot of people's attention, including Maria, who was standing not too far from Amelia.
"This is not right." A patient who had approached the crying woman said out loud.
"This injustice cannot go on answered." Another vengeful patient who overhead the crying woman's words spat out.
Amelia felt a holy fire burn in her as she turned to look at her mother-in-law more tears streaming down her face.
The words of the red-haired pregnant woman echoed in her mind like a beating gong fueling her rage and, at the same time, stifling her heart.
"Ma'am..." The voice of the first receptionist nurse snapped Amelia out of her overwhelming emotions.
"Dr Vanessa left a message for you. She said she had to attend to an emergency within the hospital. She said if it is okay by you, you can check back in two hours or you can reschedule for tomorrow."
"Tomorrow will be fine," Amelia replied, wiping her streaming tears.
"Same time?" The receptionist nurse asked.
"Yes, same time."
Amelia returned her attention to the crying red-haired woman, who had already taken note of her next appointment. "I'm so sorry you had to see something as horrible as that. Please be strong. I believe the law will catch up with that drunk driver."
Nora nodded, a devilish smile spreading inside her heart as she watched her target leave with her entourage of security while faking more tears.
What do you think?
