Chapter 277 277: Squid's Game
Lilith reached into her clothes and retrieved her throwing knives, one in each hand. The blades were glowing an ethereal blue.
Elias drew his sword and activated it, fire coming to life over the flame. "Do we even know how to hurt that thing?"
"We'll figure it out." Ren grinned.
Thorn clenched his jaw and took a defensive stance. "We always do."
The squid surged forward, ink trailing in its wake like smoke.
"Form a circle!" Ren barked. "Thorn, Zuzu! Flank it! Elias, Stay back. Attack if you see any opening! Stop it from targeting any particular person!"
"Alright!" Elias retreated.
The squid reached them, a limb lashing out. Lilith leapt high, slicing clean through it. The severed tentacle exploded in black mist, reforming almost instantly.
Ren ducked under one of its tentacles, and with his fingers, tore out a chunk of its body. The ink sizzled where he'd torn off, but the creature barely flinched.
"Its body reforms." He shouted. "Aim for the mouth!"
Thorn darted forward with a yell, slashing a tentacle just as it neared Zuzu. "Come on, you overgrown fountain pen!"
"Stop taunting it!" Elias yelled.
"That's half the fun!"
Lilith landed on its back, her throwing knives sinking deep into the top of the mass. She twisted, summoning a pulse of soul energy through the creature's body.
It screamed again, and for the first time, recoiled.
Ren saw the reaction. "That did it! Lilith! Again!"
"On it." She hissed, already driving her blades down.
But before she could sink them in, the squid thrashed, throwing her off of it.
She corrected herself in mid air, landing feet first on the wall before flipping down to the water.
The squid roared, limbs surging through the water as it lashed toward them.
Lilith didn't wait for it to arrive, streaking towards it.
Three tentacles curved towards her and she twisted in the air, her knives flashing. The severed tentacles exploded into mist, regenerating almost instantly.
Lilith was already past the reformed limbs, her knives streaking towards the mouth.
Then, a tentacle appeared in front of her in a flash.
It was just as fast as she was.
Her eyes widened and she summoned a shield over herself. There was a crack as the shield shattered and she was sent flying. As she corrected herself in the air, a shape streaked past her.
Ren surged towards the squid, Freedom glowing a bright white. He swung with a loud roar, and the sword passed through the squid's tentacle without resistance.
"What?" His jaw dropped.
Nothing happened.
Tentacles streaked towards him, and he ducked under it, slashing upwards as it passed above him. His sword simply phased through the squid, doing no damage.
"It has no soul structure!" Lilith shouted, her eyes narrowing. "Freedom's not going to work."
Ren growled. This was one of the reasons why Lilith couldn't just use a soul thread to rip out the souls of the monsters.
Monster souls were much more integrated in their body, having less structure than human souls. This was why it was much harder for Lilith to separate from the body. It would take her less time to kill a sea dragon with her soul energy than to rip its soul out.
And with this squid having no soul structure, it meant that it was the hardest soul for Lilith to rip out, and both the body and soul of the squid won't register to Freedom.
Freedom could cut anything, but by having no soul structure, the squid had turned itself into nothing.
Ren reached into his pouch, stowing Freedom and retrieving an ordinary blade. He'd have to do this the hard way.
The squid surged towards Zuzu and Elias charged in, his flaming sword lighting the room with wild orange. He swung hard, slicing through one of the squid's limbs. Fire licked across the ink.
It hissed.
The squid shuddered but did not scream.
"It can resist my fire!" Elias yelled, trying again. The fire barely clung to the slick surface of the squid. The ink swirled to smother the blaze.
"We have to hit it physically!" Ren shouted, ducking a lashing tentacle and stabbing hard into the creature's main body. "No tricks! Just cutting and blunt force!"
While everything was going on, Zuzu stood still. Her fingers twitched in specific patterns as she guided the water with more control.
Jagged small orbs of spinning water floated around her, each condensed to the point that they were no bigger than a tennis ball.
"Zuzu!" Thorn called, barely deflecting a tentacle. "Do something fancy now!"
"I'm trying!" She said through gritted teeth. "It's not yet complete!"
A tentacle lunged at her.
She spun, hurling one of the water orbs directly at the creature's limb. It impacted with a forceful explosion, tearing a hole in the tentacle and sending shockwaves through the water.
The squid howled, a sound that rumbled through their bones.
"It felt that!" Ren shouted, eyes alight. "Zuzu, whatever that was, do more of it!"
Zuzu didn't answer, already forming more orbs.
Lilith flipped forward, hurling her throwing knives, one after another with enough force that each blade found its mark, spearing each tentacle and embedding itself into the floor or walls.
The squid thrashed, its movements stuttering as the knives held it in place, pinned momentarily to the stone.
Thorn's eyes narrowed. He raised his sword, and it speared through the air, lengthening and warping to become a ribbon of steel.
He whipped it outward, and the sword wrapped around two of the squid's largest limbs, binding them together.
"You like being tied up, you overgrown inkblot?" Thorn snarled.
Ren grinned, charging in again, hacking deep into the main body with his sword. This time the creature shrieked, backing away slightly, and black liquid splattered across the stone floor.
Zuzu spun in a circle, calling more orbs of water into the air. And when she was done, she whipped it towards the squid.
It screamed as the water exploded within it, tearing off huge chunks of its body and diluting the ink inside it. And unlike their previous attacks, the injuries didn't close.
"It's breaking down!" Elias shouted. "Keep going!"
He lunged, driving his sword into a flailing limb. The creature reeled.
The ink began to ripple and boil as Zuzu kept shooting her water balls.
"It's losing form!" Thorn yelled.
The squid roared and pulled free one of its limbs, cutting itself out of Thorn's sword.
Thorn stumbled back, falling into the water.
"Thorn!" Zuzu yelled, flinging an orb toward him. It struck the tentacle before it reached him, exploding with a heavy burst of pressure and knocking it off course.
Thorn popped up again, coughing.
Lilith leapt, climbing the creature's back and stabbing downward again and again, sending her soul energy into it, and messing with its soul structure with each blast.
The squid screamed.
Then it started to collapse.
Zuzu formed a giant water sword, its thin cutting edge jagged and spinning with water like a chainsaw.
She dashed forward, water bending around her legs as she waded through the ink.
"Now!" Ren shouted. "End it!"
Zuzu leapt, her blade raised.
The squid tore its second tentacle out of Thorn's sword, raising it desperately.
She spun in the air, driving the water blade through its open maw.
The ink boiled , then it detonated.
The squid collapsed in on itself, a spiraling whirl of dark mist and inked water, and vanished.
Silence filled the water courtyard.
Then, the seven sealed exits slowly cracked open again.
Lilith sheathed her throwing knives in their hidden sheathes and Elias dropped to one knee.
Ren exhaled, surveying the damage. Thankfully, they were all still in one piece.
"I think…" Everyone turned to him. "I think the Deep is learning. And it's changing the soul structure of its monsters to counter Lilith."
Silence filled the air for a few seconds, then Thorn spoke.
"Shit."
What do you think?
