Chapter 31: Countdown
That evening, no one slept well—not just Hé'er and Bái Ānnān who were in the lower position, but even the higher-ranked Bái Xuěróu.
The next morning, Bái Ānnān awoke naturally, which was rare.
"Hmm... Bái Xuěróu didn't come to wake me today?"
Looking at the sun's position through the window, Bái Ānnān estimated it was around eight or nine o'clock. In the past, Bái Xuěróu would typically wake her up forcibly around seven, but today there had been no sign of her, which Bái Ānnān found quite strange.
Sleeping in naturally felt nice, and Bái Ānnān couldn't help but stretch comfortably. However, her happiness lasted only seconds before she realized that Bái Xuěróu's absence meant she was probably off doing something wicked.
Like, perhaps, manipulating Hé'er!
"This isn't right. When things are unusual, there must be trouble brewing. I need to check!"
Bái Ānnān quickly put on her clothes and jumped out of bed, pushing open the door and rushing toward where Hé'er lived.
In her mind, if Hé'er no longer wanted to leave with her, it must be because Bái Xuěróu had interfered. If she could just stop Bái Xuěróu, her sister Hé'er would return to her side.
Hé'er's room wasn't far from Bái Ānnān's, just two rooms away. With Bái Ānnān's current physical abilities, she reached Hé'er's room in seconds.
"Sister Hé'er, I've come to rescue you!"
Bái Ānnān quickly opened the door and entered the room with her eyes closed, calling out urgently.
"Ān... Ānnān?"
Seeing the white-haired girl who had suddenly appeared before her, the mentally exhausted Hé'er widened her eyes, somewhat afraid to look directly at her adorable little sister.
Hearing that Hé'er's tone didn't suggest Bái Xuěróu was present, Bái Ānnān dared to open her eyes. But when she saw how haggard Hé'er looked, Bái Ānnān's heart leapt into her throat.
"Sister Hé'er... what happened? Did... did Bái Xuěróu do something to you?!"
Bái Ānnān quickly stepped forward, forcefully turning Hé'er's face to look directly into her eyes. Her tone revealed intense killing intent—something that would have been impossible when she was still a black-haired little girl.
"Ānnān... I'm sorry... I... but I can't tell you. I apologize for what happened yesterday. I shouldn't have believed the witch's words... sob..."
Hé'er wanted to tell Bái Ānnān about Bái Xuěróu's actions, but seeing how unaware Bái Ānnān seemed, she immediately retreated, afraid to reveal the truth that would likely hurt Bái Ānnān deeply. She could only apologize repeatedly.
"Sister Hé'er... what on earth are you talking about?"
The more Hé'er concealed, the more Bái Ānnān's anger grew. In her eyes, it was as if a lion was ready to pounce.
"Thud—!"
Suddenly, Hé'er grabbed Bái Ānnān's right hand and knelt on both knees.
"I'm sorry. From now on, if Ānnān wants to escape, I'll do anything. Consider it compensation for my surrender yesterday..."
"Enough!" Bái Ānnān suddenly yanked her hand away from Hé'er, stepping back with clenched fists before running out of the room, leaving Hé'er kneeling in disarray on the floor.
Bái Ānnān ran endlessly through the massive mansion. Now she only wanted to find one black figure, and exact revenge for Hé'er!
At this moment, Bái Ānnān resembled a desperate husband seeking vengeance for a grief-stricken wife who had been violated.
Finally, in the devastated back garden, Bái Ānnān found Bái Xuěróu, who was covered in mud.
Bái Xuěróu's mental state didn't look good either. Large dark circles appeared under her eyes, and the spaces between her fingers were filled with soil, making her look like a madwoman.
"You..." Seeing Bái Xuěróu looking completely different from her usual elegant self, Bái Ānnān was shocked, but thinking of Hé'er, anger surged in her heart again.
She walked toward Bái Xuěróu step by step, her gaze not innocent as before, but filled with pure hatred.
"Ah, daughter, you're here? Did you miss mother? Sorry, yesterday mother forgot to sleep with you, but this is all so that we mother and daughter can be happy together... oof!"
Before Bái Xuěróu could finish, her voice suddenly went hoarse. Her pupils dilated instantly as she let out a scream.
Looking down, she discovered that Bái Ānnān had punched her in the abdomen.
This time, however, Bái Ānnān didn't feel like she had hit stone, but rather something soft like cotton.
Although Bái Ānnān didn't know why, this greatly boosted her confidence.
"You... tell me, did you do something to Hé'er?!"
"Hmm..." Even after being punched, Bái Xuěróu still wore a blood-seeping smile that looked extremely eerie.
"What are you saying? Mother doesn't understand. Besides, daughter, why are you hitting your former little home?"
"Tell me now!"
Bái Ānnān felt goosebumps all over from Bái Xuěróu's demeanor, but for Hé'er's sake, she still shouted and was about to throw another punch at Bái Xuěróu.
But while Bái Xuěróu might be insane, she wasn't stupid. Facing Bái Ānnān's second attempt, she stopped her without hesitation.
Several thick vines burst from the ground, wrapping around Bái Ānnān's fist that was about to strike, while also binding her limbs and lifting her into the air.
"Don't try to resist mother, dear. As long as you're my daughter, you'll never be able to beat me~"
Bái Xuěróu stroked her daughter's angry face, speaking tenderly and affectionately.
Bái Ānnān didn't fully comprehend what Bái Xuěróu had just said, but she somewhat acknowledged her words.
After being bound by the familiar vines again, Bái Ānnān regained some rationality, looking at Bái Xuěróu with displeasure.
"I did do some things to Hé'er, but it was only out of necessity. If you behave and listen to me well, doing what I ask, I won't harm Hé'er. Can you do that?"
"R-really?!" Bái Ānnān suddenly asked excitedly, and Bái Xuěróu nodded.
"Really. I won't lie to my daughter. I swear on my life, as long as you obediently do as I say, perhaps one day I might even let you both go."
"Fine, I agree. But if I discover you've harmed Hé'er again, I'll no longer recognize you as my mother!"
"...Alright."
Bái Xuěróu's mouth twitched, but seemingly remembering something, she still nodded and agreed to Bái Ānnān's request.
Bái Xuěróu placed Bái Ānnān back on the ground and stated her first demand.
"Good daughter, now listen to me. Go back and eat, will you? Class will start soon. As per yesterday's routine, show me what you've learned afterward."
"I... I understand."
Bái Ānnān brushed the dust off herself and quickly left the troublesome back garden, leaving Bái Xuěróu alone with a bitter smile.
"Haha... since nobody listens to me anymore, let me fulfill my last wish before I die—let me see Yèyè..."
What do you think?
