Chapter 615: Undying Part 2
Being the holy rank hunter in charge of a city brought Allegro many perks such as having the freedom to pursue his career as a singer, the political influence to make decisions in the name of the city and absolute impunity. He wasn't above the law, he was the law.
To say it was a dream come true wouldn't be an exaggeration and his position allowed him to amass a fortune while enjoying his life to the fullest.
Needless to say, his position also came with responsibilities but they could be summarized in just two rules: to protect the wall and to never leave the city without permission from the government.
This didn't bother Allegro in the slightest as he didn't have a reason to leave the city in the first place, but that was only until his beloved little sister ran away to the neighboring city which just happened to fall at the mercy of a titan rank cryptid. Money, power, influence, all became meaningless as the only light of his life was in danger and he could do nothing to save her.
Leaving the city would have been considered treason against the government and would have earned him a death sentence. Killing a holy rank hunter like him was no easy feat, but other holy rank hunters wouldn't hesitate to carry out the sentence.
It was theorized that the only way a holy rank could become stronger was to kill another hunter of their same rank. There was no science behind it, but vanquishing titans was completely off the table as their power was unfathomable. Ever since the arrival humanity had yet to take down a single titan rank cryptid, not precisely for lack of trying.
But this didn't mean holy rank hunters were weak. Evolved humans had their bodies modified to manifest their traits, ascended hunters were capable of harnessing flux energy within their bodies and heavenly rank hunters had the ability to perceive flux.
Holy rank hunters were on a league of their own as their bodies were tempered to manipulate wild flux energy in their vicinity making their energy signature so powerful the only way to conceal it was to remain hidden within city walls.
Holy rank hunters were the peak of humanity and the embodiment of power, something Uriel would learn in his own flesh as Allegro's hit demolished his face disjointing his jaw and making his eye pop like a water balloon.
"Shit! I used too much force." Allegro cursed at his own mistake caused solely out of the instinctive fear that overtook him when he spotted the wing like protuberances coming off from the young archaeologist shoulder bones.
Fear turned into horror when Uriel didn't fly away like he thought he would, then into panic when Uriel's wounds started healing on their own and finally into absolute horror when he saw the malevolent smirk drawn on Uriel's face.
"Go help him! He's going to kill him!" Emma cried as she ran at her full speed and placed herself in the middle of Allegro and Uriel spreading her arms to protect the one she loved. It would have been understandable if she attempted to protect Uriel, but she was actually sheltering the holy rank hunter.
"You're in the wrong spot," Luna pointed out, then hesitantly added an insult. "Idiot." It was her favorite insult and she tried to reserve it only for people she liked. Now, however, she was unsure whether or not she liked Emma since it seemed like she had switched sides. What Luna ignored was that there weren't any sides anymore since Allegro showed up to save the Dungeon Raiders.
"She's not! We need to stop him before it's too late." Soulfire too placed himself in front of Uriel hoping that their bond of friendship would be enough to get soothe Uriel's rage, unaware that just seeing his face irked Uriel to no end.
Judging by Uriel's blank eyes it would have been easy to assume he was unconscious, but he then spoke in a voice as cold as murder. "He needs to pay. Move aside or die with him." Those two sentences left no place for bargain. Something was owed to him and it could only be paid in blood.
Uriel walked past Emma and Soulfire, both helpless against the intensity of Uriel's energy signature that became one step above the heavenly rank thanks to the stolen life essence but wasn't quite at the holy rank.
Realizing there was no way to stop Uriel other than violence, Allegro convinced himself that perhaps he didn't hit Uriel with all his might, that maybe it was just his imagination that a heavenly rank hunter survived the full extent of his power.
This allowed the holy rank hunter to muster enough courage to intercept Uriel when he dashed at him using enough force just to contain a heavenly rank hunter which ended in Allegro being overpowered and sent to the ground taking tumbles like a ragdoll.
"Not enough." Uriel said through gritted teeth, his crimson blade dripping holy rank blood on the airport asphalt.
"I didn't want to do this, but you asked for it." Allegro channeled his flux energy to activate his 'Stacatto' skill which allowed him to store kinetic energy and release it in short bursts. Every punch Allegro threw at Uriel packed enough energy to kill a heavenly rank hunter, yet Uriel didn't bother doding and instead focused on landing as many slashes as he could on the holy rank hunter.
"Stop playing and knock him out already!" Soulfire shouted.
"I'm doing the best I can. What kind of monster is this guy!?" Allegro said as he dodged a slash only to receive another magnum round on the gut.
"Monster? I am a monster? We just wanted to work in peace and maybe help the city for a fair price, yet you came and tried to steal our ship and killed my jaguar." Uriel's calm voiced contrasted with his movements as she circled around the holy rank hunter taking every chance to strike at him.
"He's out of his mind, someone stop him!" Emma begged, receiving only silence in reply.
Luna's rage matched Uriel's and if she didn't think she would only be a hindrance in the battle she wouldn't hesitate to kill Allegro. She loved Uriel's jaguar, not just because it was a unique cryptid that fought by their side, but also because her hybrid nature allowed Luna to empathize with it like nobody else could.
Medusa, on the other hand, decided not to intervene because as odd as Uriel's behavior may have seemed to those who didn't knew him, he was still in control. He was furious and fought like a madman, with good reason.
She knew how much the Jaguar meant to him and although Medusa's opinion was that killing humans was never right in the end it was his choice. After all, it wasn't cryptids the ones who earlier that day cornered them but hunters.
Despite his holy rank might Allegro was forced to fight defensively. His strength, stamina and flux energy dwindled while Uriel's prowess increased with every slash until the holy rank hunter dropped on the ground covered in shallow wounds.
"Take this!" Allegro shouted as he released all the kinetic energy he had stored in a last ditch effort to kill Uriel. The massive amount of energy pushed air, dust particles and even heat towards Uriel in what looked like a beam coming off from his hand.
In response, Uriel pulled the invisible thread that connected the pommel with the blade's hilt wrapping the holy rank hunter like a cocoon and causing the beam to miss its mark entirely creating a hole the size of a car in the asphalt.
"Any last words?" Uriel asked as he closed in on his prey, smiling at the system's timely appearance.
[System prompt] Activate Repentance skill [Y/N]
"You saved my sister, you saved Beth! I came here to help you! Please don't kill me." Allegro begged amidst sobs.
"Beth? What did she look like?" Uriel tilted his head as his demeanor shifted from that of a cold blooded murderer into that of a curious animal. He vaguely remembered meeting a girl named Beth and saving her, but that was in Texas.
"She's the prettiest girl in the world and the kindest too!" Allegro replied without a doubt.
"Then it can't be the same. The only Beth I know is plain looking and a pain in the ass." Uriel shrugged.
"Wait! Mister Sage I can explain everything, just give me a couple minutes." Soulfire placed himself in front of Uriel once more to prevent him from dealing the finishing blow.
"Why don't you give them a chance to explain themselves? Maybe we can get something out of this." Medusa mentioned the one thing that could convince him.
"I can't hold him much longer, so you better be quick." Uriel grunted at the stupidly handsome man before fainting and dropping on the ground like a piece of cloth that fell from a perch.
What do you think?
