Chapter 123: Street Magic & Twisted History
The moment they entered, a crooked-nosed male led them into the show.
Griv also followed but sat on a bench with dozens of female commoners from the city, despite his comments about the humans being pigs. It made Leonhardt chuckle to see him chatting with the slightly plump but pretty women sitting in the front row.
"Come on, Leon!" In her human form, Zafira looked so cute and lovely, a unique atmosphere compared to her aggressively sensual aura in her demon form.
She grabbed the puppet show's program, which told the story. "Oh..." her face dimmed for a moment. "It's about a different Great demon purge from the one I know."
Leonhardt didn't want her to be upset, so he rushed towards her and sat beside the succubus, his hand instinctively extending and brushing her hair behind her ear.
"What happened in your version?" He grabbed the program and scanned the contents while waiting for Zafira to speak to him.
Hundreds of people stuffed themselves into the small tent, with only a few noble boxes which overlooked the play away from the common folk. The noble box was the place where Leonhardt and Zafira enjoyed a cool magic artefact that cooled the box to a comfortable temperature.
"Well..."
Bzzzt—! The lights dimmed as the showrunner stepped on stage and began his introduction. A low and baritone voice sang a mysterious and enchanting introduction song in the background, the volume increasing the closer the start became.
"It was a battle for survival..." Zafira said in a low voice, as the narrator also spoke.
[The evil demons, envious and greedy of humans, attack without mercy!]
A shadowy image showed on the background, of a war with fire, broken buildings and the sounds of steel clashing, screams of pain and a demonic voice saying all sorts of vulgar and offensive things.
"They came with torches, spears and swords forged with holy water... for our minerals and rare gemstones in waves. At the time there was no Demon King or Queen, because they mysterious died of illness... despite demons being resistant to diseases."
[The fiendish demon king attempted to conquer the world, bringing the powerful and heartless demons together, preparing to traverse the Astrea basin! To attack the beautiful home of the White Gated City Astrea!]
Images and scenes following the narrator's words constantly formed, as a female soprano joined the baritone voice, creating a soothing melody before suddenly the lights snapped... and a male with blonde hair and blue eyes appeared.
[Our King, the hero Adolf Appeared! Still but a young prince, his brothers obsessed with the throne, but he alone thought about the people and resisted the demon threat!]
"The Prince of humans came to our kingdom, and my aunt became enamoured with him. He tricked her with his lies, and after they became one, she allowed his army into her territory..."
[Be gone—Foul Succubus! You wicked Temptress!]
[He killed the evil demon, attempting to confuse and control his mind with her evil magic!]
The Baritone singer bellowed, while the soprano's voice trembled and became unstable as the actress playing the prince's lover fell to the ground.
Leonhardt's chest pounded, not because of the play but because he could see the story of Zafira's narration. It seemed as if his ears prioritised her voice as he looked at her dark, sorrowful face and understood that even demons must have a sense of family and emotions.
Otherwise, they would be Monsters like him...
The situation became worse... Humans invaded and destroyed half of the empire. This story happened decades before, but the current king conquered almost half of the demon empire, or its former name, the demon highlands.
"It was at this point that my mother who watched her sisters dying one by one met with my father. He wasn't a noble but a warrior. One of the strongest demons to exist in history who fought to survive born one of the weakest demons an imp. He evolved into a true devil in less than fifty years."
"I see..."
Leonhardt could feel her hand stroking his fingers, ever since they left the carriage and brief moment to buy things. She never once let their hands separate, using her tail at times to keep their wrists anchored together like a couple bracelet.
Bzzzt—! The play entered the first intermission, and the lights turned back on.
It ended after the prince sought to become the king of the Gladius Kingdom. He used the demons to boost his prestige and then returned a war hero, his hands stained with the blood of demons.
'Well, Demons aren't moral creatures, but can humans really judge, or me for that fact?'
"How is the play so far, Zafira?"
Her fingers rubbed against his knuckles, stroking his hand before gripping him tighter, and that's when he noticed just for a brief moment... because it vanished into the air instantly after dripping from the corner of her eye.
Zafira was crying.
'Did the memory of her family make her upset? How do I comfort a demon?'
What the puppet show did so far was to portray all succubi as temptress monsters without hearts. Zafira looked calm and solid without issues, but because he started to learn more about her fragile side, her glamour faded for a moment, and that's how he saw her tears.
She was even masking her emotions through the glamour spell!
Leonhardt dryly muttered, "History is but a spell woven however the caster desires."
His words caught her attention as she studied his face. "That's... unexpectedly poetic... and sweet for you."
He shrugs. "I'm full of surprises, and I find you more charming than any human. How dare they call you evil and ugly."
After his honest comment, Zafira's cheeks turned pink, her breathing heavier as she touched her chest. He could feel her throbbing pulse through their connected hands and realised that it wasn't so complicated to comfort Zafira.
'She isn't a demon, that's right... Zafira is Zafira.'
Zafira leaned closer to him, the warmth of her breath and sweet scent of her body enveloping his senses as she kissed his cheek. "Leon, thank you. It means everything to hear you trying to cheer me up, shall we leave?"
"What don't want to hear about the human prince who falls in love with the princess from the elven kingdom?"
"Huhu, it would be amusing if you fucked her brains out and made her obsessed with you." Zafira joked, squeezing his hand. The boring second part of the play focused on the King's rise and how the demons still feared him...
"However, my father doesn't fear them. He is already planning how to destroy them, and it's a plan he will put into action in the next few years."
"He won't succeed."
"Eh? Why?" Zafira looked back at Leonhardt with a confused and shocked expression with her mouth wide open.
"Because we will have already conquered this place by then!"
Leonhardt understood Zafira better. Like a cautious cat, she pulled away if too direct, but when using subtle hints and words, it made her curious and come to him first. He used the word we instead of I on purpose.
"Hehe, somehow that sounds really nice."
The pair stood together and left the tent, both satisfied for different reasons, but what made Leonhardt even more happy was how the female beside Griv was reaching into his pants and her face was bright red.
'It seems Griv is 'Gathering Intel!' So I'll let him enjoy it.'
***
[Wow, that goblin is just like you!]
(He seems to have a strange taste though—goblins have always preferred human women though, but what about the goblin woman he loved?)
'I think he's gaining confidence, improving himself as a man to face her.'
[You think so?]
(Ehhh~ that doesn't make sense. I thought he LOVED her?)
'No woman wants a virgin man to ruin her first time... right? What if he's bad in bed?'
The same was true for men—they didn't want to ruin their first time with the girl they loved. Rather, many men were loyal, and Leonhardt admired them. But if a bad first time led to an estrangement, he would hate that and believed all experience would lead to a happy life.
"Shall we grab something to eat, Leon?" Zafira continued their act as a husband and wife, almost glued to his arm, while her eyes watched the kebab machine turning around, with various exotic meats, different from the dungeon.
'Maybe I should hire or upgrade some goblins into chef and other jobs...'
After they learned how delicious food could be, they couldn't stop.
Even though neither of them needed to eat regularly, Leonhardt soon found that Zafira enjoyed eating and also mentioned that back home, they would mimic the human nobles and royals and eat like them.
'Well, she did mention it was for diplomatic reasons.'
Leonhardt, with a smile, rushed forward and ordered some kebab since Zafira hesitated.
"Old man, can I get two huge servings with your recommended fillings and sauces?"
"A noble, eh? Are you sure you want this 'common' food?" He seemed a little hesitant and probably suffered in the past to nobles who came just to complain or didn't respect his trade and craft.
"Please make it extra hot! I will pay you in advance since it's a hot day."
Clang—! Leonhardt flicked a large silver coin worth 10 silvers even though the kebabs were only worth 2 silvers each.
What do you think?
