Chapter 64 - 64: A Soul Master with a Spirit-Type Martial Soul?
Chrysanthemum Douluo had finally calmed down. The resentment in his heart had been somewhat alleviated by continuously slaughtering these strange soul beasts.
After venting his frustration, the glow of the spirit rings behind him dimmed slightly.
His soul power was being consumed far too quickly!
Panting lightly, Chrysanthemum Douluo walked over to Ghost Douluo.
Curiously, he asked, "What's wrong, Old Ghost? Did you find something?"
BOOM—!
Whoooosh!
The golden spear in Serpent Spear Douluo's hands spun violently, howling like a golden cyclone.
With a powerful gust of wind, several streaks of golden light surged like lightning along the spinning spear!
"Haaah!!!"
Serpent Spear Douluo's entire body ignited in a brilliant golden blaze, lighting up the dark, churning sea before him.
THUD—!
His spinning spear plunged fiercely into the ground!
BUZZ—!
A massive wave of golden energy erupted from him in all directions, sweeping out like a tidal wave from the epicenter of his body.
For a moment, time itself seemed to freeze.
The roiling black sea of Zerg below him slowed, the golden wave cutting cleanly through it.
Any Zerg that touched the golden light instantly began to disintegrate, as if melting away into golden motes, vanishing without a trace.
The black tide was briefly replaced with a sea of dazzling gold.
After releasing this powerful attack, the golden light in Serpent Spear Douluo's eyes faded abruptly, a look of exhaustion crossing his face.
He looked around with satisfaction and tightened his grip on his spear before walking over to the other two.
Chrysanthemum Douluo hurriedly channeled a stream of golden light from his Martial Soul into Serpent Spear Douluo's body, replenishing his rapidly depleting soul power.
The Strange Velvet Sky Chrysanthemum wasn't just a powerful offensive tool—it also carried some auxiliary capabilities typical of plant-type Martial Souls. Although not particularly strong, for a Title Douluo like Yue Guan, it was enough to provide some beneficial support effects, at least temporarily.
However, since few knew of this auxiliary property, and Chrysanthemum Douluo didn't specialize in support, it was rarely used. This time, the three of them had focused on offensive capabilities and didn't bring a support-type soul master. Thus, Chrysanthemum Douluo had no choice but to assist.
Still, both Chrysanthemum and Ghost Douluo's opinions of Serpent Spear Douluo dropped a notch.
Although young and already a Title Douluo—his previous attack clearly demonstrating his strength—he had just recklessly expended too much of his power.
Given their situation, constantly under siege by these strange soul beasts, and with the possibility of even more powerful enemies like the Titan Giant Ape or the Azure Bull Python waiting in the shadows...
To burn through one's soul power like this was dangerous. If a real threat emerged, Serpent Spear Douluo would become nothing more than dead weight.
Chrysanthemum Douluo had been on high alert ever since the Titan Giant Ape had set the ambush. After all, the Azure Bull Python was even stronger than the ape!
If that terrifying beast launched a surprise attack, even if they didn't die, they'd be seriously injured!
So Serpent Spear Douluo's reckless display of power only increased their risk.
Ghost Douluo shook his head slightly and said in a deep voice, "Have you two noticed something? The more of these creatures we kill, the more just keep coming. It's like they're endless."
Both Chrysanthemum and Serpent Spear Douluo nodded grimly.
Ghost Douluo's face darkened. "Not only that—have you noticed that there are no corpses?"
At those words, the other two's expressions changed. They quickly scanned their surroundings.
Sure enough!
Just as Ghost Douluo had said, none of the soul beasts they had just slain had left behind a single corpse.
Even stranger, the tide of beasts had stopped attacking. Instead, they stood motionless, as if intimidated by Serpent Spear Douluo's earlier strike.
They were simply observing now.
Logically, the battlefield should be littered with bodies by now—piled up high.
So where had the corpses gone?
Ghost Douluo continued, "At first, I thought these soul beasts were just energy constructs—that's why their bodies vanished. But after careful observation, I realized something else... their corpses were being dragged away—by their own kind!"
Chrysanthemum and Serpent Spear Douluo exchanged stunned looks.
Never in their lives had they heard of soul beasts in the Douluo Continent dragging away the bodies of their fallen comrades.
Chrysanthemum Douluo asked, "What are you implying, Old Ghost?"
Narrowing his eyes, Ghost Douluo replied coldly, "My Martial Soul is ghost-based. I've dealt with spirits and phantoms for years."
"That's why I suspect... these aren't soul beasts at all. They're creatures under someone's control."
"After they die, someone implants new souls into their bodies, reanimating them—creating the illusion of an endless army."
"What?! A Martial Soul like that actually exists?!"
Serpent Spear Douluo's face filled with shock. He'd thought Ghost Douluo's abilities already defied understanding.
Now, there was something even more outrageous?
Chrysanthemum Douluo frowned. "But what about the Titan Giant Ape? How do you explain that? Who could possibly control a 100,000-year soul beast? Even His Holiness the Pope couldn't do that."
Ghost Douluo nodded with a sigh. "That's why this is just a theory. I can't explain why the Titan Giant Ape would be cooperating with these creatures."
Chrysanthemum Douluo fell into thought. "Then let's return and report everything to His Holiness. We can decide what to do afterward."
"Agreed."
The trio made their decision and prepared to withdraw from the battlefield.
BOOM—!
Suddenly, the ground trembled once more. A faint but sharp buzzing noise pierced their ears.
Chrysanthemum Douluo looked at the immobile Zerg horde and asked in confusion, "What's that sound?"
Serpent Spear Douluo shook his head.
Ghost Douluo was about to speak when an overwhelming sense of death slammed into him!
His heart pounded wildly, as if trying to escape his chest.
"DODGE!!"
Ghost Douluo's expression twisted in horror as he screamed.
SHRIP—!
Several jet-black spines, radiating an aura of annihilation, erupted from the ground beneath them!
SPLURT!
Elsewhere, within a massive Zerg hive...
A pale white cocoon suddenly cracked open.
A golden light burst out from within, and a slender, jade-white arm slowly extended from the cocoon.
Lin Fan's heart skipped a beat. His vision shimmered as if his soul itself had been elevated.
Qian Renxue!
