Chapter 25 - The Kishinkai

Chapter Twenty-Five: The Kishinkai

“What is this place?” Shirakawa Miwa asked, her voice tinged with uncertainty. The woman’s smile was enigmatic. “A sanctuary for those wrestling with inner turmoil. Enter, and you’ll find clarity.” Shirakawa Miwa nodded, following her into the building.

The structure was quintessentially Japanese, nestled deep within a silent forest, its surroundings hushed. Inside, the decor was minimalist yet warm, a faint fragrance in the air soothing the senses. The woman led her to a room where a plush sofa sat at the centre, abstract paintings on the walls fostering a serene ambience. “Please, sit,” the woman said, her tone gentle. Shirakawa Miwa complied, murmuring, “Thank you.”

After serving her a cup of tea, the woman spoke. “Please wait a moment, miss. Another instructor will join you shortly to help unravel your troubles.” Shirakawa Miwa nodded, unsuspecting. As the woman exited, she locked the outer door, ensuring Shirakawa Miwa’s confinement, a sly grin on her face as she departed. Unaware, Shirakawa Miwa reached for the tea, only to feel a sudden heat coursing through her body, her breath quickening.

“Strange…” She shook her head, trying to clear the fog clouding her mind, but the sensation persisted, her vision blurring. The fragrance in the air was no longer calming—it was wrong. Her body burned, her heart raced, as if an unseen force eroded her reason. “What… what’s happening?” she whispered, struggling to rise, but her legs buckled, unable to bear her weight. Panic surged—she was trapped in a snare.

Fumbling for her phone, her trembling fingers dialled a number. Naoko Omon’s voice answered, “Hello? Instructor Shirakawa?” Shirakawa Miwa’s voice was faint, urgent. “Chairwoman… save me… I’m at a place called ‘Kishinkai’… something’s wrong… please, call the police…” Naoko, alarmed, turned to Lin Yuan. “Master, Instructor Shirakawa’s in trouble! She’s at ‘Kishinkai’ and says it’s dangerous. She wants us to alert the authorities!”

Lin Yuan’s brow furrowed, a chill in his eyes. “Kishinkai? That name reeks of trouble.” Snatching the phone, he demanded, “Which direction are you in? Use the school’s main gate as a reference!” A dazed pause followed as Shirakawa Miwa struggled to orient herself. After a minute, she gasped, “East… toward that… mountain…” Lin Yuan pieced it together—few local landmarks qualified as mountains. Without another word, he bolted from the office, racing toward her location, unease gnawing at him. This is the risqué world—danger lurks everywhere. She might be in grave peril.

Within the Kishinkai, the locked door creaked open. A man in a black robe entered, his face shrouded in shadow, only his eyes gleaming with an eerie light. His voice, low and raspy, carried a chilling allure. “Miss Shirakawa, welcome to our sacred haven,” he said, advancing with a mocking tone. “You seem troubled. Allow me to set you free.”

Shirakawa Miwa trembled, straining to retreat, but her body refused to obey, her consciousness fading. Clinging to a shred of clarity, she knew she had to stall for rescue. “Who… are you?” she asked, her voice weak and quavering. The man chuckled, his fingers grazing her cheek. “I am the master of this place—and soon, yours. Fear not; I’ll show you unparalleled bliss.”

Revulsion surged within her, but she was powerless, her body succumbing to an unseen force. As the man prepared to advance, the door exploded inward. Lin Yuan charged in, his fist slamming into the man’s head with a thunderous bang. The impact sent the man crashing to the floor, cratering the ground. Yet, he survived. A slimy tentacle lashed from beneath his robe, but Lin Yuan, sensing the man’s inhuman nature, dodged effortlessly.

Unleashing a flurry of punches, Lin Yuan pummeled the robed figure into a pulp, yet the creature endured. With a roar, it transformed—its human guise melted, skin blackening, countless viscous tentacles sprouting, its bell-like eyes glowing crimson. “You court death!” it snarled, its voice now a guttural horror. Lin Yuan sighed, exasperated. What in the world is this thing?

With no other recourse, he accessed its attribute panel:

「Name: Tentacle Demon」.

「Type: Low-Level Demon」.

「Origin: Taimanin」.

「Attributes: Tentacles (Green), Super Regeneration (Green), Mind Control (Green), Desire Devouring (Green), Aphrodisiac Secretion (Green), Aggregate Form (Green)」.

「Weaknesses: Fire, Holy Light」.

Fire or holy light, Lin Yuan noted, his mind racing for a strategy to exploit the demon’s vulnerabilities.
