Yang PeiMin finished getting dressed, ran her fingers through her hair as a makeshift comb, and then casually tied it back with a rubber band. While doing so, she asked him, “Who lives next door? Are they all comrades with military wives?”

Shen Yiguang had already gotten up, intending to change out of his sweat-soaked clothes as per her suggestion. He quickly unbuttoned his shirt, yet his gaze remained fixed on her. Yang PeiMin had just woken up and looked particularly enchanting, her cheeks flushed and her eyes slightly bleary. Her casual way of tying up her hair and the stark contrast between her fair hands and her dark hair were dazzling. His wife’s skin seemed even fairer and more lustrous than it had a few months ago. The ease with which she fixed her hair was filled with a woman’s unique charm.

Even though he was multitasking, he still responded to his wife’s question, “Yes, all the rooms here were vacated by the fellow soldiers’ families to make space for those accompanying the army. So, it’s all couples living here. The person who greeted us last night, living to our right, is the wife of Zhao Hongjun, the second platoon’s platoon leader. To the left is the deputy platoon leader Cui Aijun, and one more room over is the political officer Lu Daqi.”

“As for what their wives are like, I’ve only moved in recently, so I haven’t had much contact. But the Red Army wife next door, having greeted us a few times, seems straightforward and enthusiastic and likes to meddle a bit. When you have nothing to do, you should get to know a couple of them, chat a bit, and if there’s anything, just come back and tell me.”

By the time he finished speaking, he had also changed his clothes—and Yang PeiMin had enjoyed the view. She then got out of bed and went into the shower room to wash up.

Shen Yiguang picked up the dirty clothes behind her and brought them in as well, placing them in the laundry tub, “There’s no rush to wash these clothes. Hanging them up to dry in the evening will have them dry by morning.”
