Chapter 1 Collecting corpses at midnight
y name is Mao Su. I was born in a small mountain village in Shu. My ancestors have been Feng Shui masters for generations. I learned the ancestral business from my father since I was a child, but he never let me start.
As time went by, I became bolder.
When I was about to graduate from college, in order to avoid arranged marriage, I found a job in a funeral home to burn corpses.
I just started working today, and it was my turn to work the night shift tonight. I wanted to buy some wine and food to get closer to my colleagues, so that I could handle things more easily in the future. I carried the food I bought from outside and a box of cold beer upstairs. It was June, and I was so hot that my T-shirt was soaked. It was terrible!
When I walked to the door, I heard the bed in the room next door, Lao Li, creaking, accompanied by a woman's panting.
Any adult would understand this kind of sound at once!
I couldn't help but sigh: "This old man Li is still strong at his old age!"
Old Li is in his fifties and works in a funeral home. He will retire in a few years. He is on duty with me tonight. Because of middle-aged baldness, he simply shaved his head. On duty with me is a young lady who is in charge of reception.
I put down the dishes and arranged them on the table. I came to the corridor and knocked on Mr. Li's door until I heard the door open in the next room and the sound of high heels going away to the stairs. "Uncle Li, it's me, Xiao Mao. I just went out to buy some food and wine. It's so hot. Come over for a drink?"
In the room, Mr. Li readily agreed: "Okay, wait a moment. I'll come over after I clean up!"
Mr. Li agreed, and I turned around to call the front desk lady: "Sister Yaoyao, it's me, Su Su. I went out to buy some barbecue. Do you want to come and cook together?"
Sister Yaoyao responded: "Su Su, you eat first. I just took a shower and will come over after I clean up!"
Since I started working, Sister Yaoyao has always called me by my first name instead of my last name, and she keeps calling me by it. Sometimes I feel intimate, and sometimes I wonder if she treats me as a sister!
Old Li turned around and went into the house, grabbed a braised pig's foot and ate it, then opened a bottle of beer and drank it. After half a can of beer, he sighed: "It's so hot today! Drinking some cold beer is so damn refreshing. Xiaomao, come here quickly, or you'll miss it!"
After returning to the house, I clinked glasses with Old Li three times, and he smiled and said: "Xiaomao, you are a good kid. Uncle will tell you something. Listen carefully!"
I naturally knew what he was going to say, and hurriedly thanked him: "Uncle Li, thank you!"
Old Li pointed to the ground: "This stone mill funeral home is older than me. Now it is located in the prosperous area of the main city. Every inch of land is worth a lot of money. If it were an ordinary funeral home, it would have been demolished long ago. Do you know why it is not demolished?"
I shook my head and said nothing, but I was guessing in my heart that this funeral home might have a story, and it is not simple.
Old Li continued: "The superiors arranged three demolitions. Each time the contractor led the construction team to the site, he died on the night of the start of work. The most bizarre thing is that the three demolitions were separated by more than 20 years, and the three contractors died in exactly the same way, being crushed to death by the chimney that fell from the burning corpse room. It was a tragic death!"
Old Li became emotional when he said this: "Later, not long after, the construction workers involved in the demolition also died one after another within one or two years!"
My heart skipped a beat, and I thought there was something strange about the funeral home. Because I went out with my father all year round, I was not afraid, but more curious. But when I thought that my father would not let me start now, I had to wait until I officially became a man before I could open my third eye and use the methods he taught me, I felt itchy in my heart.
At this moment, there was a rapid knock at the door, and Sister Yaoyao's voice came, trembling as if she was frightened: "Susu, the police station called just now, a few hundred meters away from the funeral home, someone died! We have to go there to collect the body and bring the body to the funeral home!"
I was a little confused. It was my first time on duty, and I encountered this? Before I could answer, Sister Yaoyao said again: "Please pack up first and change into work clothes. I'll go call Uncle Li!"
"Uncle Li is here!"
I responded while opening the door.
Sister Yaoyao was wearing pajamas, the kind of flesh-colored silk pajamas. Because she had just taken a shower, her hair was not dry yet, wet, and her sweet look made her look sexy no matter how you looked at her. Her clear eyes seemed to be seducing.
Old Li was still drinking. When he saw Sister Yaoyao, his eyes were shining with lust. He took a puff of cigarette and asked with narrowed eyes: "Yaoyao, what's the matter?"
Sister Yaoyao looked at Old Li's lustful look, and a trace of disgust flashed in her eyes. She repeated what she had just said.
Old Li picked up a piece of meat and put it in his mouth. While chewing, he said: "Those guys in the police station are lazy. They took it back to their morgue, which is convenient for autopsy. They had to bring it to me!"
After that, he put down his chopsticks and said to me: "Change your clothes and go with me. It's just right to give you courage. There will be many such things in the future!"
After a few minutes, I finished cleaning up and washed my hands with soap several times in the bathroom until they were completely clean. I was relieved. This is what my father taught me. Hands touch many things all day long. Before touching the corpse, they must be washed clean. It is a kind of respect for the corpse to avoid attracting unclean things.
After the preparations were done, I pushed the corpse bed with Old Li and walked outside. As soon as we reached the door of the funeral home, a pair of scarlet high-heeled shoes caught our eyes. Under the illumination of the street lamp, they were bright red.
The shoes were very red, as if they had just been fished out of blood. When I noticed it, Old Li also noticed it. He shuddered violently, and sweat beads appeared on his forehead again. I don’t know if he was scared or what, but he kicked the high-heeled shoes away and cursed: "What the hell, you encounter this thing when you go out!"
I didn’t take it seriously at all, but I didn’t understand why Old Li’s emotions fluctuated so much: "Uncle Li, what’s the matter?"
Obviously, since seeing the high-heeled shoes, Old Li’s mood has been a little strange: "Nothing, nothing, I just feel unlucky. I don’t know which idiot threw the high-heeled shoes at the door. Aren’t they afraid of stepping on shit when they go out barefoot? If I catch him, I’ll fuck him up."
It’s only a few hundred meters, not far.
Along the way, Old Li gave me many instructions, all of which were about the taboos of collecting and burning corpses. They were similar to what I learned from my father, except for some details. When we arrived at the scene, three policemen stood there. There was a white cloth covering a human-shaped figure lying quietly on the ground. Old Li was angry, and it was obvious that these policemen had disturbed his mood for drinking. He yelled at the policemen: "Zhang Dahan, the police station doesn't have a morgue, so they had to go to the funeral home. I can't even work a shift, and you come here to pick up the corpse in the middle of the night!"
What do you think?
