Chapter 56 - 56 55 Human Sentiments
Chapter 56: Chapter 55 Human Sentiments Chapter 56: Chapter 55 Human Sentiments 3:00 PM.
Sunlight was cast in from the western glass curtain wall.
Quite a few colleagues made themselves steaming cups of coffee and began their routine of slacking off.
The entire office area seemed quiet and warm.
Suddenly, a new message popped up in the tech department work group.
[Director Chen Yunteng: “@Backend Developer Tang Song, you’re officially resigning from the company today, thank you for your efforts over the past months.”]
Initially, only a few people saw it.
Soon, the tech department’s office area became noisy.
“Tang Song is resigning!?”
“What’s going on!? Didn’t he just get confirmed not long ago? Why resign now?”
“Tang Song, have you found your next job?”
“Could it be that the company is financing and aiming to lay off people in our tech department?”
“Layoffs? Don’t scare me; my wife just lost her job!”
…
The news of Tang Song’s resignation came out of nowhere and was completely unexpected.
It instantly ignited this ordinary Tuesday afternoon.
Some worried about his situation, others feared for themselves, and of course, some were maliciously pleased.
At that moment, the sparsely haired Director Chen Yunteng walked out of his office.
Everyone immediately shut their mouths and stared at their computer screens without glancing sideways.
Chen Yunteng’s gaze swept toward Tang Song’s direction, and he said in an even tone, “Chaoyang, you first do the job handover with Tang Song. After the Labour Day break, a new colleague will join us, and then you can hand over the project to him.”
“Yes, President Chen.” Wang Chaoyang quickly agreed.
Chen Yunteng nodded slightly and turned to leave.
The colleagues immediately exchanged glances, sensing something was amiss.
Although President Chen didn’t say anything drastic, his attitude and demeanor suggested that Tang Song had definitely offended him.
Normally, when a colleague was leaving, as Director, Chen Yunteng would take the initiative to organize a dinner or drinks after work.
But this time, he seemed exceptionally indifferent and simply arranged for the resignation handover.
For a moment, the entire office zone became very quiet, and no one dared to talk about it anymore.
“Ding-dong—” The department’s main group received another message.
[Director Chen Yunteng: “Everyone, focus on your job and don’t speculate unnecessarily. The company is in a period of rapid growth, and we have already started restructuring the principal departments. The technical support department will announce the specific plan after the Labour Day break, which will be a great opportunity for everyone, stay energized!”]
After a while, colleagues began to respond.
[Developer Du Shaokai: “Received! Stay energized!”]
[Frontend Zhao Yue: “Received! (#StayEnergized)”]
[Frontend Hu Mingli: “Received!”]
…
This effectively reassured everyone; there were definitely no layoffs planned, so many exhaled in relief.
Jinxiu Commerce is a large company with good benefits.
Many people had been working there for several years and had settled into their comfort zones, so they were worried about being laid off.
After glancing at the messages in the group, Tang Song left the chat.
He then left all the other work-related group chats as well.
On WeChat, colleagues with good relations frequently asked him why he had resigned.
Tang Song didn’t go into detail about his conflict with Du Shaokai, just briefly mentioned the pay cut and layoffs.
Just before the end of the workday, HR Liu Huihui came over.
Tang Song handed over all his office supplies, including his company access card, laptop, and mouse, and signed to confirm.
The resignation process was all completed.
He opened his backpack, packed his water bottle, tissues, snacks, and charger, and all his personal items.
Looking at his empty desk, he felt an inexplicable sense of loss, but, of course, he was more filled with ambitious uncertainty about the future.
“Brother Song, let’s find a place to get together,” Guo Peng patted him on the shoulder, his face full of regret, “I really hate to see you leave; you are a good person and skilled too. If you go, no one will be here to monitor the servers when I take leave.”
Tang Song smiled at Brother Guo, stood up, and said, “Comrades, I thank everyone for your support over time, and I’d like to treat you all to a meal at Lanting Iron Plate Buffet, please sign up now if you want to join.”
Hu Mingli quickly said, “Are you resigning or hitting the jackpot? A $299/person buffet is too extravagant. I say we just go to the Northeast Restaurant next door and have a lively hot pot stew.”
Guo Peng added, “Don’t overdo it, kid. You just bought a car, and now you’ve resigned, how will you make ends meet?”
Tang Song shook his head and smiled, “Meeting up will be rare after I leave, treating everyone to a good meal is the least I can do, don’t worry, I can afford it.”
“Well, I’m not feeling well today, so I won’t be able to make it,” a colleague suddenly said.
“I’ve already promised to take my wife and kid shopping, so I can’t make it either.”
“I’m on a diet lately, you guys go ahead, Brother Song, I’ll catch up with you for a drink some other time.”
…
Others also came up with various reasons to decline attending the meal.
Zhao Yue hesitated for a while, her face full of apology, “Brother Song, I have a few bugs to fix. If I can finish by 7, I’ll join you guys, but it’s unlikely. Have a good meal and drink, take lots of pictures and post them in the group so I can live vicariously.”
Her impression of Tang Song had just begun to change; she had thought about developing a deeper relationship, but he had resigned and had even offended Director Chen.
Although she felt it was a pity, she still made the wisest choice.
Tang Song looked around and noticed that most of his colleagues were avoiding eye contact.
He could guess why.
The IT department’s farewell party was always organized by Chen Yunteng, and this time he hadn’t initiated it, which clearly meant he had a significant issue with Tang Song.
This was a crucial moment for restructuring in the IT department, and everyone had a chance for promotion.
If they caught Chen Yunteng’s attention because of this matter, they might lose this precious opportunity.
In the end, everyone was just colleagues, and since Tang Song had already left, they didn’t want to risk it.
Such is human warmth and coldness.
Tang Song pursed his lips and casually smiled, “No worries, those who are busy can keep at it, those who are coming, let’s get ready to go.”
Guo Peng immediately closed his laptop, stood up, and said, “Let’s go, I’ve always wanted to eat at Lanting Iron Plate Buffet, and today I finally can.”
“I’m going too, I haven’t yet ridden in your Wuling Hongguang; we live close by, and this way, I can catch a ride back,” Hu Mingli grabbed her bag and waved at him.
Out of the 16 members of the Tech Support Department, only these two ended up joining, making the atmosphere somewhat awkward for a moment.
Du Shaokai stretched out his arms, waving them, smiling brightly, “Old Song, don’t forget to come back and visit us! I’ll miss you.”
Wang Chaoyang scratched his head, looking somewhat embarrassed, stood up and helped Tang Song pick up his backrest, “Tang Song, let me walk you out and help carry some of your stuff.”
He and Tang Song had joined the company at the same time, were around the same age, and had always been close.
Now that Tang Song was leaving, not attending the dinner was one thing, but not seeing him off didn’t sit well with him.
Hu Mingli patted Zhao Yue on the shoulder, “Yue, aren’t you going to see him off? He’s helped you a lot in the past.”
She glanced at Hu Mingli and then at Tang Song.
Zhao Yue hesitated for a moment, then stood up, “Then I’ll see you off too, I’ll just fix the bugs when I get back.”
What do you think?
