Chapter 014: No Guilt at Midnight, No Fear of the Night Patrol at Dawn!

The scorching sun hung high, casting flickering shadows on the buildings lining the street.

Suddenly, the peaceful street was disrupted by the urgent clatter of hooves. A prison cart rolled forward slowly, its iron chains clanking. Inside the cart, a prisoner sat with a dark expression, his eyes glinting with malice.

Out of nowhere, a sharp blade aura cut through the sky like a shooting star.

The guards escorting the cart barely had time to react before a chilling sensation engulfed them. In the next instant, their bodies were sent flying like broken kites, blood spraying through the air and staining the nearby stalls red.

Inside the cart, the prisoner’s eyes gleamed with triumph. A glance around revealed that the street was now packed with his own men, all wielding sharp weapons and wearing menacing expressions. Clearly, they had come well-prepared.

“Reinforcements have arrived!” A surge of excitement rose in the prisoner’s heart as he watched his subordinates swiftly take action. Some hacked at the cart’s chains, while others lunged at the fallen guards. Amidst the glinting blades, the prison cart was torn apart by four men, and the prisoner was quickly freed.

“In broad daylight, you dare to rob a prison cart? Bold beyond measure—this is a crime punishable by death!”

A cold smirk played on the lips of a young man dressed in a blue robe. He was none other than Xu Qian.

Despite being outnumbered by criminals, he showed not a trace of fear. On the contrary, he appeared composed and unshaken.

The criminals, enraged by his defiance, roared and charged toward him.

Xu Qian moved with agility, weaving through the crowd like a swimming fish. His fists whistled through the air, and within moments, three criminals lay defeated at his feet.

But no matter how skilled he was, he had only two fists. As time passed, exhaustion set in, and his movements became sluggish. Eventually, a particularly strong blow sent him staggering back eight steps.

At that moment, a figure leaped down from the second floor and landed steadily beside Xu Qian—it was Lin Qiye.

Supporting Xu Qian with a firm grip, his gaze was calm yet resolute.

“Next time, could you show up a little earlier?” Xu Qian wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and joked.

Lin Qiye chuckled. “No can do. I have to make a grand entrance as the protagonist.”

Their casual banter only infuriated the criminals further. With beast-like roars, they lunged at the two men.

Lin Qiye’s expression sharpened. In a flash, he accelerated, dashing toward the criminals like a streak of lightning.

“Remember this—next time you hear the names Xu Qian and Lin Qiye, lower your heads. Otherwise, we’ll beat you every time we see you!” His voice carried an unquestionable dominance.

Before his words even faded, a surge of powerful sword aura erupted from Lin Qiye, crisscrossing through the air. In that instant, the entire street was engulfed in his sword’s overwhelming presence.

Like an unstoppable torrent, the sword energy swept toward the criminals, cutting through everything in its path.

“What… what kind of sword technique is this?” The criminals gaped in horror at the spectacle before them, their faces filled with disbelief.

They had never imagined that someone still in the Refining Essence stage could unleash such a terrifying sword aura.

The frontmost criminals were instantly pierced through, their bodies riddled with wounds as they collapsed to the ground. Even those further back, though spared from fatal injuries, suffered deep cuts.

Xu Qian watched the sheer power of Lin Qiye’s sword aura with a trace of envy in his eyes.

However, his true preference was for the blade, so his admiration remained just that—admiration. He knew that everyone had their own path. Lin Qiye had chosen the way of the sword, while he would continue down the path of the blade.

At that moment, the Night Watchmen, led by Li Yuchun, arrived at the scene.

They were met with a blood-soaked street littered with corpses. Shock flashed across their faces.

But when their eyes landed on Lin Qiye’s commanding figure, wielding his sword like a rainbow in the night, they felt a surge of admiration.

“This young man is remarkable,” Li Yuchun thought to himself.

He was well aware of the stringent selection process and ruthless nature of the Night Watchmen. Only the strongest survived and thrived in this profession.

Despite being merely at the Refining Essence stage, Lin Qiye’s display of power was already nearing the Refining Qi stage. Such talent and strength meant he had a promising future—and perhaps, he was even a worthy candidate to join the Night Watchmen.

One of the injured criminals wiped the blood from his face and gritted his teeth. “You dare to hurt me? You’re dead!”

With that, he unleashed a burst of power and charged at Lin Qiye at full speed.

Li Yuchun and the others immediately stepped forward, positioning themselves in front of Lin Qiye.

“No guilt at midnight, no fear of the Night Watchmen at dawn!”

They knew that as Night Watchmen, their duty was to protect the people.

These criminals had the audacity to stir up chaos in the capital—truly, they were courting death.

With swift and ruthless strikes, the Night Watchmen cut the criminals down like autumn leaves in the wind.

Their moves were precise, each attack carrying the decisiveness and efficiency that defined the Night Watchmen.

In a short while, all that remained on the street was the aftermath of the battle—fallen criminals sprawled across the ground.

Xu Qian and Lin Qiye exchanged glances, relief washing over them.

Had the Night Watchmen not arrived in time, escaping unscathed would have been difficult.

At the same time, witnessing the Night Watchmen’s prowess left them both in awe. A thought began to take root in their minds.

“You two have impressive skills,” Li Yuchun remarked as he approached them, a smile playing on his lips.

His eyes gleamed with appreciation, evidently satisfied with their performance.

“Thank you for the compliment, Senior.” Xu Qian and Lin Qiye cupped their hands respectfully.

They knew that Li Yuchun, as a seasoned Night Watchman, possessed far greater experience and strength. Receiving his praise was an acknowledgment of their abilities.

“Would you two be interested in joining the Night Watchmen?” Li Yuchun asked, his tone carrying a trace of anticipation.

He understood that young men like Lin Qiye and Xu Qian—full of potential—were exactly what the Night Watchmen needed.

Exchanging a glance, both young men felt a surge of excitement.

Joining the Night Watchmen not only meant honing their skills but also providing them with an opportunity to protect the people.

“We would love to!” they answered in unison, their voices resolute.

However, just as they thought they had secured a place, Li Yuchun suddenly added, “If you want to join, you’ll have to pass the entrance test first.”

Lin Qiye and Xu Qian were speechless.

Wait, didn’t he just praise them and imply they could join? And now, after all that buildup, they still had to take a test?

Feeling slightly duped, they could only shake their heads in exasperation.

But deep inside, both of them knew—they had already made their choice.
