Chapter 308
The carriage was enveloped in suffocating silence.
Lou Yuejue sat beside Qiao Chuchu, feeling as though he could barely breathe. Tentatively, he spoke up: "Sis—"
"Don’t talk."
Qiao Chuchu kept her eyes fixed on the faces in the video call. "Don’t distract me from seeing them clearly."
The others fell silent.
Pei Yuan carefully broke the quiet: "Chuchu, you already know."
She didn’t respond, minimizing the video call to continue scrolling through the chat history.
She scrolled all the way back to the beginning.
The further she read, the colder her body grew, the more her heart pounded with dread!
A flood of information crashed into her mind!
Her head throbbed violently, and she tossed the phone aside, feeling as if her skull might split open!
"Sis!" Lou Yuejue panicked, grabbing her arm. "Are you okay?! What’s wrong?!"
Voices clamored from the phone: "Chuchu, what’s happening?!"
"Are you feeling sick?!"
Dizzy and nauseous, Qiao Chuchu didn’t dare move.
She feared even the slightest motion would make her vomit.
When the dizziness finally subsided, it was as if her soul had snapped back into place—her memories returned in full force.
Driven by the pain, she gradually steadied herself.
[I’ve regained my memories.]
[Just like the script said, my memories returned under intense stress. I guess this counts as stress too.]
A cold laugh escaped her lips.
[Stress from my own people.]
Lou Yuejue’s expression shifted, unsure whether this was good or bad. He hesitantly gripped her arm. "Sis…"
Qiao Chuchu turned to him.
Under the gentle glow of the starlit roof in the silent car, tears welled in her eyes—not from fragility, but from fury with no outlet. "Why didn’t you tell me?"
Lou Yuejue’s worried face twisted into confusion. "I—I—"
Qiao Chuchu’s icy fingers tightened around his.
A silent demand, equal parts encouragement and coercion.
"Why didn’t you tell me?"
Her probing gaze locked onto Lou Yuejue as she mustered every ounce of restraint to ask softly, "Do you have some unspeakable reason?"
Lou Yuejue’s lips parted, his nose stinging with unshed tears.
Guilt was written plainly across his face, a stark contrast to his earlier haughty demeanor when he’d thrown things in anger.
He even leaned back slightly, trying to pull away from her grip.
"Sis, I don’t know how to say it… I don’t know how…"
Lou Yuejue was resisting her.
Qiao Chuchu’s expression darkened. "Stop the car."
Lou Yuejue: "? Sis?"
Qiao Chuchu raised her voice: "Stop the car!!!"
The car screeched to a halt.
Without a backward glance, Qiao Chuchu stepped out.
Lou Yuejue panicked, chasing after her. "Sis! Sis, wait!"
The bewildered bodyguards followed, lining up along the roadside.
Qiao Chuchu walked faster.
Lou Yuejue caught up. "Sis—"
She shoved him toward the bodyguards. "Get lost!!!"
Lou Yuejue paled, trembling at her shout, fear flashing in his eyes.
His phone was clutched tightly in his hand, the screen still facing Qiao Chuchu.
Bathed in the car’s headlights, she looked like she might shatter, her body haloed in gold. "I thought you all genuinely cared about me! But you were just using me!!"
Lou Yuejue’s legs gave out, the bodyguards catching him as he bit his lip, terrified.
Chaos erupted from the video call.
Lou Tingsi rushed to explain: "Miss Qiao, my son was following my orders! Let me explain—I told him not to say anything!"
Lou Yuejue seized the lifeline, lifting the phone toward Qiao Chuchu. "Yes, Dad! Hurry and explain! Don’t let sis stay mad at me!"
As he raised the phone, the others finally saw Qiao Chuchu’s face.
Tears brimmed in her eyes as she stared at the camera.
Like she was looking at enemies.
Their hearts lurched.
Lou Tingsi’s chest ached as he spoke carefully: "When we first met you, I could already hear your thoughts. But because it involved life-and-death matters for me and my son, we chose not to tell you."
"I’m sorry."
"I was selfish. I wanted to protect us, so I kept it from you."
"Miss Qiao, I’m sorry…"
Qiao Chuchu said nothing.
Two fat tears rolled down her cheeks. "Then what about my brother? Why didn’t he tell me?"
The Pei family’s faces drained of color, their mouths opening and closing soundlessly.
The silence choked Qiao Chuchu. She gritted her teeth. "You all knew the plot from the start. You knew I died over and over to save you!!"
She glared into the camera. "Pei Fengnong, do you know what it feels like to suffocate?!"
"I held on through sheer willpower! I kept thinking—I have to revive you, I have to see you again, I want our family whole—and I endured it!!!"
Pei Fengnong’s eyes reddened. "Chuchu—"
"And Lin Qing!"
Lin Qing flinched at the sudden callout.
On screen, Qiao Chuchu looked utterly betrayed, tears streaming. "That time you were kidnapped, I knew you’d suffer. I didn’t want you to endure that, so I risked my life to save you! And what happened? Your father shot me in the shoulder, then in the forehead!"
"I died once and still kept protecting you!"
"Tell me—how many people in this world would go that far? Who would knowingly face death to save someone they’re not even related to?!"
Lin Qing’s eyes welled up, guilt-ridden. "I’m sorry…"
Qiao Chuchu shook her head, crying. "After everything I did for you, was honesty too much to ask?! What would’ve happened if you’d just told me from the start?!"
"Or did you think it didn’t matter because I could just come back to life?!"
Her voice cracked. "When I make friends, I give them my all. I’m not as clever as you, not as calculating—but I thought sincerity would be met with sincerity!"
"I even naively believed you liked me for who I am."
Qiao Chuchu let out a bitter laugh. "I was wrong. You were only nice to me out of survival instinct!"
Lou Yuejue and the others shouted in unison: "That’s not true! We genuinely care about you!!"
She fired back: "Then why couldn’t you tell me the truth?!"
They froze.
Qiao Chuchu demanded, "Or do you have a system controlling you too?! Does your heart hurt when you try to tell the truth?!"
A familiar, searing pain flared in her chest—the same warning she’d endured under the system’s control, when honesty was forbidden.
Clutching her heart, she let out a strained laugh. "You already knew I was forced into this by the system. I admit I was conditioned—back then, I was trapped, helpless, unable to speak freely!"
"So what’s your excuse?! Were you conditioned too?!"
Her face gradually turned a sickly shade of purple. "Don’t tell me you—you’re like me too? After telling the truth, you also—"
Before Qiao Chuchu could finish her sentence, she collapsed to the ground with a thud.
Lou Yuejue saw her falling and lunged forward, catching her just in time—taking the brunt of the impact as they both hit the floor!
"Master!" the bodyguard cried out in alarm.
Lou Yuejue, acting as a human cushion, held Qiao Chuchu securely against him, wincing in pain. "Get her to the hospital—now!"
What do you think?
