Chapter 27: City Lord Liu’s Final Insistence, Kneel Down Later…
Liu Chengfeng only felt that his current mood was complicated to an indescribable degree.
He originally came to the Su family intending to assert his dominance, but now his biggest wish was simply to protect his knees in front of Su Zhou.
The reason was nothing else.
Damn it, didn’t he see that ferocious and majestic Golden Luck Dragon in the sky, glaring at him like a tiger watching its prey?
And that blood-stained, taboo-shrouded old man standing respectfully behind Su Zhou!
With this kind of setup, calling the Su family an ordinary clan—Liu Chengfeng wouldn’t believe it even if you beat him to death.
Right now, he was growing increasingly nervous inside.
“Would Su Zhou hold a grudge against me for not visiting him these past few days?”
“He probably wouldn’t… right?”
He thought to himself with a guilty conscience.
That so-called intent to intimidate had already completely vanished.
He was now visibly uneasy.
Wearing a fawning smile on his face, he no longer carried any of the lofty bearing of a city lord.
Those who knew might recognize him as the city lord. Those who didn’t might think he was Su Zhou’s servant.
However, Su Zhou was well aware of Liu Chengfeng’s thoughts—and didn’t care at all.
As for Liu Chengfeng’s flattery, Su Zhou didn’t bother to respond, instead speaking calmly:
“City Lord Liu, is there some important matter that brings you to the Su family today?”
“Ah… ah… yes…” Liu Chengfeng stammered briefly before responding.
“Patriarch Su, I came today to inform you of a matter. In about two months, in Tianwu City, there will be a—”
“Secret Realm* emerging into the world?”
[*Heavenly Cave changed to secret realm]
Before Liu Chengfeng could finish his sentence, Su Zhou cut him off.
“Yes yes yes—wait, how do you know???” Liu Chengfeng hadn’t yet realized what had happened and just continued Su Zhou’s sentence.
But once he did, his expression changed drastically.
The emergence of a Secret Realm was considered a state secret in the Divine Xia Empire. Although many major sects and clans were already aware, families from remote border cities like Tianwu City shouldn’t be privy to information of this level.
But Liu Chengfeng quickly figured it out.
“Qualification??”
“Was I out of my mind just now? With the Su family’s ten-thousand-zhang-long Golden Luck Dragon and that terrifying old man who’s likely above the Sun Veiling Realm acting as a servant—who the hell needs qualifications?”
You had to admit, Liu Chengfeng’s imagination was impressively vivid.
Su Zhou hadn’t said anything, yet this guy had already mentally mapped out his own surrender.
In his mind, the so-called ‘three great families’ of Tianwu City were probably just the Su family joking around.
Now, with the Secret Realm about to appear and opportunities arising, the Su family simply waved their hand and crushed the Ma and Wang families.
As for Liu Chengfeng’s doubts, Su Zhou offered no response, only gave him a faintly smiling glance.
Liu Chengfeng immediately pushed aside his messy thoughts and became even more respectful.
“For a figure like Patriarch Su, knowing of the Secret Realm’s emergence must be as easy as breathing. I was being presumptuous.”
“Not at all. I merely heard rumors about the Secret Realm. As for the specifics, I’ll still have to trouble City Lord Liu to enlighten me.”
Su Zhou wore a warm smile, gentle as a flawless piece of jade.
But in Liu Chengfeng’s eyes, this made Su Zhou appear all the more unfathomable.
“Patriarch Su must be dissatisfied with me for not reporting this to him earlier.”
“This is a warning!”
Unconsciously, this city lord actually used the word report in his mind when referring to the Su family.
Immediately, Liu Chengfeng began spilling every piece of intel he had, like a child confessing.
“Recently, fourteen elders of the Wangqi Sect performed a secret ritual, observing celestial phenomena and divining the stars.
They predicted that a Secret Realm inheritance would emerge a year and a half from now just outside Tianwu City.”
“All the major clans and sects who heard of this sent their prodigies to compete for opportunities within it.”
Su Zhou nodded upon hearing this. A Secret Realm inheritance would only permit prodigies under the age of eighteen to enter.
Such realms were often left behind by ancient powerhouses, intending to choose a worthy successor from among the strongest young talents.
The resources and opportunities inside were extremely rich—just entering could bring great rewards.
Now that the realm was about to appear practically on his doorstep, how could Su Zhou possibly let it go?
“I see. Then City Lord Liu, your visit to the Su family today wasn’t just to inform me of this matter, was it?”
Su Zhou looked at Liu Chengfeng and asked lightly.
At once, Liu Chengfeng was stumped again. The higher-ups intended for small local clans to serve the incoming major sects and clans well.
But how could he dare say that out loud? His gaze accidentally swept past the black-clad old soldier at the side.
The man just happened to nonchalantly stroke the broken sword in his hand, sending a jolt of terror through Liu Chengfeng.
Screw it—my life’s still my life!
Let someone else deal with the rest!
He made up his mind and quickly said, “I came this time to deliver entry slots to Patriarch Su!”
“Every clan and noble family is allocated three slots. Naturally, the Su family is no exception!”
“Three?” Su Zhou’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“Of course the Su family deserves an extra one! That’s only fitting for a family of your status!!” Liu Chengfeng replied with a frightening level of survival instinct, barely missing a beat.
“Oh? Then I must thank City Lord Liu.” Su Zhou gave a faint smile, and even the old soldier behind him curled his lips, smiling slightly at Liu Chengfeng.
Only then did Liu Chengfeng breathe a sigh of relief. The conversation that followed was a pleasant exchange.
Su Zhou casually brought up the topic of taxes, while Liu Chengfeng adopted the attitude of “if you bring up taxes, you’re insulting me.”
A while later, Liu Chengfeng clasped his hands and took his leave.
Just as he was about to exit the Su residence, he heard Su Zhou mutter as if to himself:
“Knows his place… Less bloodshed that way.”
“Your Excellency is merciful…” the black-clad old soldier replied respectfully.
The two lines were spoken lightly, like a passing breeze—but when Liu Chengfeng heard them, his knees buckled just as he was stepping out the main gate of the Su residence, and he fell to his knees.
“F**k me… I still ended up kneeling after all.”
What do you think?
