Chapter 483: Chapter 478: Industrial Development Fortifies the Nation, Science and Technology Strengthen the Country
Jinji Lake, Su City Center Square.
“When can it be ready at the earliest?”
In a high-end tailor shop, Lu Liang sat inside with his legs crossed, watching Su Yuchen being measured by the shop’s master tailor from head to toe, like a human mannequin.
“Mr. Lu, if we expedite it, it can be ready by tomorrow morning at the earliest.”
The sales associate brought over tea with a smile on her face. If she wasn’t wearing an Armani employee uniform, she couldn’t help but want to take a photo with Lu Liang to share on her Friends circle.
“Then let’s expedite it. Oh, and get him three sets of the same style suit, and deliver them to the Zhongyin Crown Hotel next door tomorrow morning.”
After finishing up at the tailor shop, Lu Liang took his brother-in-law to a men’s club; he just shaved his beard and styled Su Yuchen’s hair.
Lu Liang sat on the side, idly playing with his phone, when he suddenly asked, “Can you drink?”
Su Yuchen was startled, “Brother, I can drink a little.”
Before coming here, his parents told him, in private call him brother-in-law and in public call him brother.
Be smart, be clever, as long as you’re not a fool, relying on Lu Liang would pave a very smooth path ahead.
“I was just worried you’d be like your sister, allergic to alcohol; that would probably be a disaster for working within the system.”
Lu Liang suddenly laughed, picturing Su Wanyu after drinking, her cheeks as red as a boiled crab, still insisting it was just her face flushing, not an allergic reaction.
Thinking of this, he glanced at the time—it was only midday in London—so he decided to video call Su Wanyu.
As soon as the call connected, a toothless mouth suddenly appeared on screen, accompanied by cooing sounds.
“Daddy, look, a white spot, I’m getting a tooth!” Su Wanyu’s baby-like voice came from off-screen.
Lu Liang’s demeanor softened, and he said with a gentle smile, “I see it, so does that mean mommy is in a lot of pain?”
The camera zoomed out to show Su Wanyu in the frame, and she glared at him, “Can’t you be serious?”
“Isn’t it serious to care about you?” Lu Liang laughed as he pointed the camera at Su Yuchen, who was getting his hair done.
“You’re back in the country?” Su Wanyu asked without surprise, presumably having already been informed about her brother’s trip to Su City to prepare for the exam.
“I got back this afternoon. There’s something I need to take care of in Su City tomorrow, so I thought I’d take Yuchen to familiarize himself with some people.”
Lu Liang made silly faces to amuse the little one, who clearly hadn’t forgotten him and was reaching out for a hug.
“Stop teasing her; she’ll start crying and then she’ll be hard to console,” Su Wanyu complained, not just about Lu Liang, but also about the little one.
Although Lu Liang had only played with her for a few days, every time she saw a picture of him, she would reach out for a hug, showing her undisguised love. To think that Su Wanyu had tirelessly attended to her for months to earn that kind of affection!
Lu Liang laughed joyfully, “Isn’t it normal for a daughter to be close to her father? Next time, let’s work hard to have a son; maybe he will favor you.”
“It hurts to death; who would want another child with you.”
Su Wanyu said haughtily, lifting up the little one and waving her tiny arms, “Say bye to daddy; mommy has to go to class.”
“Bye-bye~” Lu Liang laughed, ending the call, completely oblivious to the fact that Su Yuchen had finished having his hair done and had been sitting beside him for quite a while.
He said softly, “Siqing really looks like your sister did as a child, delicate as a porcelain doll.”
“It’s best if she takes after her sister. If she got my big nose, that’d be disastrous for a girl. Let’s go, check into the hotel and take a shower. I’ll take you to meet some friends tonight.”
Lu Liang patted his shoulder and walked out of the men’s club, not bothering to ask about the bill, since Xu Delin would take care of it behind the scenes.
Su Yuchen hurried to keep pace with Lu Liang, coming up beside him. He had been holding back a question that he couldn’t keep inside any longer.
His parents were somewhat snobbish. His sister might be unaware, but he was crystal clear about it.
After Lu Liang broke up with the online influencer, there were rumors he had a new girlfriend in Tokyo, and his relationship with Reba was ambiguous.
The gossip said that he nonchalantly gifted the ten million worth necklace he won at the Bazaar charity gala, sparking speculation about their relationship.
If Lu Liang were just an irresponsible playboy, it would be one thing, but he was notably responsible.
And just now, the tender way he interacted with his sister on the video call seemed all too genuine.
“Why?” Su Yuchen was puzzled. If Lu Liang liked his sister so much, why was he also flirting around?
Caught by surprise with that question, Lu Liang was momentarily stunned. After thinking it over for a while, he said, “I was going to brush you off by saying the world is complicated, but on second thought, there’s no need. The truth is, I like your sister, but I also like other people.”
“Perhaps for you, liking someone is precious, something to guard with your life, but for me, for us ‘rich people’ you talk about, liking someone is quite cheap. It’s like the top-grade sports cars you can’t afford; I could buy ten of them without breaking a sweat.”
Su Yuchen fell into a long silence before retorting with false bravado, “People are not objects, people have feelings, and their own thoughts…”
But he couldn’t finish because it would lead to talking about his sister. It was her choice, not Lu Liang’s choice.
Su Wanyu surely knew what Lu Liang was like. She knew, but she chose to stay and even had a child with him.
Lu Liang smiled and didn’t pursue the topic any further, instead handing over a room card: “Wait for me downstairs in half an hour.”
Su Yuchen nodded and headed upstairs to his room.
When night fell, Lu Liang arrived at a private restaurant by the lake and met Zeng Shaofang from the Business Bureau, along with several district leaders.
“Mr. Lu, it’s finally good to see you. I thought you had forgotten about the two projects we have under construction here,” Zeng Shaofang joked with a smile.
One project with an investment scale exceeding a hundred billion,
another surpassing ten billion.
If it were the former, Lu Liang had divested from the public fund, and it was now none of his business. To avoid any conflict of interest, it was better not to ask too much.
But the latter project was one in which he had invested real ‘silver,’ holding a 72% personal stake.
Yet astonishingly, he’d gone almost half a year without inquiring.
Lu Liang smiled and said, “It’s out of trust for Director Zeng and the other leaders. Under your management, the project must be progressing very smoothly, so I have no worries.”
“Always a pleasure to hear Mr. Lu speak,” the others could barely contain their laughter, but they didn’t dwell on the matter.
Although they were district leaders, Lu Liang wasn’t intimidated by them. After all, there were many eyes on this place, and if they dared to make any foul moves, the city’s leaders probably wouldn’t mind replacing them just for these two projects.
The group made small talk, mainly asking about Lu Liang’s dealings with the Liu family. Lu Liang waved it off with a smile, “That issue has been pretty much resolved, about ninety percent. Once the production base is completed, I’ll likely shift my focus here.”
“Industry is what makes a nation thrive, technology is what makes it strong. If there’s anything you need help with, Mr. Lu, just say the word.”
They looked at each other and all revealed satisfied smiles.
That was exactly what they had been waiting for. Their future political achievements, the capital for their promotion, would depend on the development of Lu Liang’s company.
Hearing this, Lu Liang pulled Su Yuchen closer, and with a smile, introduced him: “Leaders, this is my brother-in-law, Su Yuchen. This is Director Zeng from the Business Bureau, Director Liu from the Administration for Industry and Commerce, Director Zhang from the Tax Bureau…”
“A fine young man, the pride of Fuda, I hear you’ve been preparing for the exam at the Xiang City branch of the Tax Bureau, right?”
Zeng Shaofang took the hint and, in collaboration, specifically introduced Su Yuchen’s basic information to Director Zhang from the Tax Bureau.
Director Zhang nodded with apparent admiration, “As long as the fundamentals are solid, our Xiang City branch is very welcoming of Comrade Su’s joining.”
“You should thank Director Zhang quickly now,” Lu Liang said with a smile, his tone implying they were comrades in arms.
As long as the written test results were decent, it was just a matter of going through the procedure, and in no time he would be a part of the Xiang City Tax Bureau.
“Thank you, Director Zhang, thank you, Director Zeng, thank you, Director Liu…”
Su Yuchen’s face was taut with nervousness. He picked up a bottle of alcohol and toasted with every leader, ending up with more than half a jin in his stomach after making the rounds.
Everyone present applauded enthusiastically.
Zeng Shaofang glanced at Lu Liang’s glass, noting that it was still seven-tenths full after a mere half glass, and couldn’t help but tease, “The younger brother sure can outdrink his elder by more than a little.”
“Old Zeng, don’t bring up what shouldn’t be mentioned,” Lu Liang snapped back, suddenly clutching his ribs and adding with a forced smile, “I’ve got a liver condition; the doctor told me to cut back on drinking.”
Zeng Shaofang was caught between laughter and tears but didn’t press further.
After all, Lu Liang was always the same when drinking with city leaders; who were they to urge him to drink more? They simply shifted their attention to Su Yuchen, patting his shoulder: “Comrade Su sure can hold his liquor. Come on, let’s have another.”
“Sure, Director Zeng,” said Su Yuchen, wanting to cry but having no tears, stealthily glancing at Lu Liang, hoping his brother-in-law would come to his rescue.
“In the middle of winter, and these crabs are still so plump. They’re very well raised.”
The corners of Lu Liang’s mouth turned up ever so slightly, pretending not to hear, intent instead on cracking open some Jinji Lake crab.
Drinking more now was for the sake of drinking less later; that was as far as he could help. From here on out, it was up to Su Yuchen to fend for himself.
What do you think?
