Chapter 179: Chapter 179: It’s Others Who Are Wrong
She knew her request was capricious, but the long-missed motherly love and her illness-induced weakness made her act like a true seven-year-old child, cloying to her mother.
“Alright, Mom will go ask the old lady for some rice,” Zhao Xiaojuan said with a heartache for her daughter, although she was afraid of being scolded by her mother-in-law, she still knocked on the elderly couple’s door.
Zhang Guihua saw that it was her, and with a stern face, asked, “What are you doing up in the middle of the night, not sleeping?”
“Mom, Zhaodi is weak, the doctor said to make something nutritious for her, I want to cook her some rice porridge,” Zhao Xiaojuan said quietly, her face a mix of longing and nervousness.
Although the family always ate coarse grain meals, Zhao Xiaojuan knew that there was a big bag of rice locked in the kitchen cabinet.
She didn’t want much, just a small bowl would be enough.
Upon hearing this, Zhang Guihua exploded in anger, pointing at Zhao Xiaojuan’s nose and berating furiously, “What? Eat rice porridge? Zhao Xiaojuan, you sure have the nerve! Just because you went to the hospital once, you think you’re city folks now? You dream of eating rice porridge, but have you looked at yourself to see if you’re worthy enough?”
The more Zhang Guihua scolded, the angrier she became recalling how they had disregarded her advice the day before and insisted on going to the hospital, wasting more than eight yuan in vain.
This younger family had always seemed honest and simple, but she hadn’t expected them to be so greedy.
Now they even had the nerve to covet the rice in the cabinet!
The two incidents combined, Zhang Guihua’s voice grew louder as it echoed around the room with her sharp scolding.
Sun Lixia, lying on the kang, heard the old lady’s curses and smirked, reveling in her misfortune, “This sister-in-law’s family is really something, daring to ask for anything. They spent so much money on the hospital, and now they want to drink rice porridge. Even my two sons haven’t had any, yet she, a loss-making good-for-nothing, dares to think about it. It’s all a pipe dream!”
And Zhaodi, hearing the old lady’s vicious curses, showed extreme anger and hatred on her face, her fists clenched tightly as if she wished she could tear her mouth apart right then.
That rice also belonged to their branch of the family, and they even earned more work points than Uncle and the third uncle, so why shouldn’t they have a share of it!
She swore in her heart that one day, she would earn lots and lots of money with her parents and sisters!
She would make the old lady grovel and suck up to them like she did with the main branch of the family in the past, depending on their moods to eke out a living!
Laidi, who had been crouching next to Zhaodi to accompany her, suddenly saw her sister’s face turn fierce and terrifying, and was so startled that she stammered, “Si, si-sister, what, what’s wrong?”
Did her sister’s brain really get damaged?
Zhaodi, seeing that she had scared her sister, quickly softened her expression, “Laidi, don’t be scared, Sis is fine, it’s just sad to see Mom being scolded by Grandma because of me.”
Then Da Ya also came over, feeling guilty, “It’s all my fault. If I hadn’t been greedy and eaten your meal last night, it would have been better.”
Seeing her take all the blame upon herself, Zhaodi felt a sting in her nose, really wanting to say no one here was to blame, but instead, it was the fault of other family members!
But at that moment, all she could do was hold back her anger to comfort Da Ya, “Big sister, it’s not your fault. Even if you hadn’t eaten that bowl of rice, Grandma would have taken it anyway.”
She herself had a poor appetite and eating half a bowl less, her Grandma would probably be only too happy.
She sniffled, regretting her earlier caprice, “It’s my fault, I shouldn’t have asked Mom for rice porridge.”
“It’s not your fault, it’s normal to lose your appetite when you’re sick,” Da Ya said gently, patting her back, comforting her in return.
What do you think?
