Chapter 161 - 161 Su Meixi Goes to Hu City
Chapter 161: Chapter 161 Su Meixi Goes to Hu City
Su Meixi received the message: there was another opportunity for professional advancement in the department that year, this time heading to Hu City. And only one slot was open.
For some reason, she really wanted that slot.
She wanted it, so she went after it.
Several people in the department were eyeing the opportunity, including Li Pingping and Xiao Du. But with Su Meixi around, the slot inevitably went to her.
Li Pingping had spent the past two years without any significant achievements, merely completing her routine work but not delivering outstanding performance.
Unlike Su Meixi, who was first, an asset to the hospital, and second, had many patients—her slots would be booked instantly every time she had a clinic session, making her performance exceptionally good.
Hence, when she applied, the slot naturally became hers.
Li Pingping grumbled about it during mealtime, “Isn’t Su Meixi just popular because she’s pretty, and that’s why more people come to her for consultations? So it seems that work ability doesn’t matter; what’s most important is having a face like a vixen…”
Nobody listened to her.
…
The flight to Hu City was in the evening.
The hospital’s policy was to reimburse staff only for regular airplane or high-speed train tickets—first-class tickets were not covered.
As Su Meixi was used to being frugal, she would usually opt for economy class, even though she could afford more expensive options.
While waiting for her flight, she felt as if someone was watching her, but after looking around, she couldn’t find anyone suspicious.
Later when boarding the airplane, just after she settled into her seat, a flight attendant approached her, “Excuse me, are you Miss Su Meixi? Congratulations, you’ve been upgraded to business class since this flight is not full.”
Su Meixi was slightly surprised.
But she had often heard from colleagues about chances of being upgraded to business class when flights weren’t filled; it all came down to luck.
“Miss Su, may I help you take your luggage over?” the flight attendant offered.
“Sure, thank you.”
She only had a small suitcase. The flight attendant took it and placed it in front, then signaled to her, “Miss Su, your seat is here.”
Business class was in a two-seat arrangement, more spacious. She was seated in the aisle seat, and by the window, a man was asleep in his seat, covered by a magazine on his face.
Su Meixi simply thought the man was dressed nicely and had a good figure, beyond that, she didn’t think much of it.
She sat down.
Soon, the plane took off.
During the climb, she felt a tightness in her chest and a buzzing in her ears.
She wore noise-canceling headphones and then closed her eyes.
Finally, the plane stabilized.
The lights above came on, and the captain announced that they had reached cruising altitude and that passengers could recline their seats and lower their tray tables.
Su Meixi opened her eyes, intending to glance out the window, even though she knew there would be nothing to see.
The man next to her chose that moment to remove the magazine from his face.
Su Meixi could now see his face clearly.
A rogue and rascally but handsome face.
Bai Anzhi!
Bai Anzhi seemed to have just woken up. He smiled at Su Meixi, “What a coincidence, Dr. Su.”
“It’s you!” Su Meixi seemed to understand something.
“Yes, it’s me,” Bai Anzhi chuckled, “Buddha said that destined beings will share the same passage; being on the same plane means we have destiny, right?”
Su Meixi gave a faint smile, “Was it you who upgraded my seat to business class?”
No wonder there had always seemed to be eyes on her while she was at the airport.
Bai Anzhi’s smile was slightly crooked, reminiscent of Teacher Chen in his youth, “Yes, I made the switch. I saw we were on the same flight, and I feared you might refuse if you knew beforehand, so I didn’t say anything. You’re here now, so don’t bother going back. Look, they’re about to serve meals; you can try the business class red wine.”
“You went through all this trouble just to have a drink with me? Sorry, but I don’t drink.”
“I thought you could hold your liquor quite well?”
“I prefer to drink alone.”
At that moment, the flight attendant came asking what she’d like to drink, and she decisively chose cola.
Evening flights offered bread and sandwiches, and business class even had steak, but she wasn’t hungry and just left it on the tray table.
Meanwhile, Bai Anzhi seemed to enjoy his meal thoroughly.
When Su Meixi looked at him, he even explained, “I never used to eat airplane meals, but now that I’ve encountered an old friend, my appetite is especially good.”
Who’s his old friend?!
Su Meixi pondered over her acquaintance with Bai Anzhi; he was a boldly-behaved rascal, clearly aiming to compete with Gu Wei for certain things, including her.
But after she had made clear her feelings for Gu Wei, Bai Anzhi had stopped making inappropriate remarks. This showed that he might be thick-skinned but wasn’t a bad person.
Maybe he planned to win her over in other ways, such as emotionally, to pursue her and then cast her aside.
Such a person, if continuously avoided, may feel encouraged rather than deterred. It might be better to confront him head-on.
Therefore, she did not switch back to economy class: first, it would be a hassle since her luggage was already here, and second, she wanted to see what he was really up to.
A tablet was mounted in front of her seat, and Su Meixi started watching a movie.
Bai Anzhi suggested from beside her, “We’ll be in Hu City in an hour or so, you won’t finish the movie. How about a chat instead?”
Su Meixi smiled and hit pause, then looked at him, “Sure, let’s chat. What do you want to talk about?”
“Isn’t conversation a two-way street?”
“I don’t feel like talking; I’d rather listen to you,” she said with a smile. “If you don’t have anything to say, I’ll continue watching my movie.”
What do you think?
