Volume 15 Chapter 3: Making Jam
"Jam?" Another interesting food came out of his mouth.
"Yes. I think your parents will like jam. You can keep it for a long time. And you can pretty much eat it anytime you want." The condiment was more versatile than chocolate; the latter was heavy in the morning. However, jam was lighter and paired well since it was made from fruit.
"Oh! Please make that for me, Keith!" Muriel nodded. This was the perfect gift for her parents.
"Oh! Make some for us as well!" Herrick and the others chimed in! Making jam? Why wouldn't they like them? It would be perfect!
“Sure, I don’t mind. It’s killing two birds with one stone.” Keith stretched his hand. I need to restock them in a few days anyway. Jam was a staple on the island; they would have it during breakfast and snack time. A jar would run out in a day.
"Yippee!"
“Let’s get started.” Keith turned to Carolyn and the others, “Go and pick out the fruits you want to make the jam from.”
Carolyn held Eri’s hand, “Let’s go and get the most ripe ones!”
"Mmhmm!"
While the others went to the garden, Keith took out the sugar and materials. Sterilizing the jar came first. He placed them into the boiling water, letting them get cleaned. Carolyn and the others quickly returned with the fruits.
There was a momentary stare before Keith questioned, “Are you guys serious?”
The number of fruits they brought over could fill half the kitchen! Were they planning to make him work overnight?! Carolyn smirked, "I'm going to need five jars of jam!"
“Five? Why do you need five?”
“Two for my father and mother and the last three for me!” Carolyn ordered. Having jam for breakfast was her go-to. Smear it on toast and make five of them; that was the princess's breakfast.
"..." Three for yourself? Those eyes said it all; she was being serious about this. This little piggy.
"If you're making me-"
“Diced them!” Nephele raised her hand and cast her magic. Instantly, all of the fruits were diced and peeled!
“Then I will need to-“
“Cleaned it as well.” Not to be left out, Udine made all the fruits float. It was a delicate technique; all the fruits were coated in a thin layer of water, rinsing them!
"..." You guys really want it that badly, huh? Keith held his head, "Alright, let's get to jam-making! For starters, sugar." The simple way to make jam is to make it with sugar and mashed fruits. As he mushed them, what came next was to simmer them into a soup-like consistency.
A sugary and fruity smell slowly floated up their nostrils. Slowly, their faces melted into putty, engrained with a goofy smile.
"Papa." Eri tugged on Keith's pants, "Up." She was the only one who couldn't reach up.
Keith chuckled, "Okay, but don't touch the pot, it's hot." He picked her up onto the table. The fox’s ears went back and forth as she stared at the pot. Noticing the thick consistency, he poured them into the glass pot.
Each one looked like a precious jewel. Carolyn salivated, "Thank you for the-"
"Hold it. This one is not for taking." Keith quickly snatched the jar out of her hand like a hawk!
“What?”
“Why not?” Carolyn pouted.
"That's because it's made with moonlight persimmons. Even I don't know the effects." Moonlight persimmons had the effect of increasing magic for a short period. However, it had a permanent effect, which increased the consumer's mana capacity.
That sounded good, but if someone consistently consumed them, it could blow their mana capacity, making them unable to use magic. Even he didn't know what would happen if he cooked it down into a jam.
"Can you three try it?" His eyes were directed to the dorm mothers.
The three could easily tell him if it was safe or not.
"Understood." The three dipped their spoons into the jar. The jam had a perfect consistency that allowed it to coat the spoon. As they ate, they slowly savored it in their mouths before coming to a conclusion,
"It's fine to consume," Udine answered.
"I think you need more sugar." Nephele licked her lips, but she got a flick to the forehead with her response.
"Do you want me to put you on a diet again?" Keith rolled his eyes. She was asking for trouble.
Diana added, "It's fine for people with small mana capacity. But be careful of how much you spread onto your food. You might get sick." Thinking about it, they used a good number of persimmons in the jam. However, it was also mixed with sugar.
"Also, I think cooking it lowers the fruit's effect." It was different when she ate the fruit raw.
“Okay, good.” Keith nodded. Knowing that it was safe, he could give it to them.
"..." Guys, stop doing that. It's getting weird. They were staring at the jam like it was their precious baby.
What do you think?
