Chapter 67: The Journey to Valeria’s Ruins
The sun hung high in the sky as Lyra, Ella, Yuki, and Mizu continued their trek toward the ancient ruins of Valeria. The capital was now a distant speck on the horizon, replaced by rolling plains, dense forests, and winding dirt roads that led into the untamed wilderness.
Birds chirped overhead, the rustling of leaves accompanying the cool breeze that swept through the trees. It was a peaceful atmosphere—at least for now.
Yuki adjusted the straps on her bag and stretched. “I have to admit, this is a nice change of pace. No monsters, no thieves, no sudden disasters—just a calm journey through nature.”
Ella chuckled. “Don’t jinx it. The ruins are still a day away, and I doubt it’ll stay peaceful the entire time.”
Lyra nodded, scanning their surroundings. “The ruins are said to shift due to unstable magic. If that’s true, we should expect unusual occurrences before we even reach them.”
Mizu, trotting alongside them in her fox form, flicked her tail. “Shifting ruins, huh? Sounds like a headache. I hope it’s at least interesting.”
They continued along the winding path, the terrain gradually changing from grassy fields to rugged hills. The deeper they went, the more evident it became that the land had been abandoned for centuries. The road was cracked and overgrown, the trees twisted in strange formations, as if shaped by unseen forces.
By late afternoon, they reached a clearing where they decided to take a break. Lyra pulled out a small magic kettle from her bag, pouring hot tea for the group. Yuki and Ella sat on a fallen log, while Mizu sprawled out on a rock, soaking in the sun.
As they ate their rations, Ella glanced toward the distance. “We should reach the ruins by noon tomorrow if we keep this pace.”
Yuki grinned. “And then, treasure hunting begins!”
Lyra smirked. “It’s not just about treasure. The ruins hold lost knowledge—maybe even ancient spells.”
Mizu yawned. “And maybe ancient traps. You two should be careful not to get too excited.”
With their break over, they continued their journey, the trees growing denser as twilight settled in. The sky turned shades of orange and purple, signaling the approach of night.
A Night in the Wild
As they found a suitable camping spot, Ella quickly set up a perimeter with alarm runes, ensuring they wouldn’t be ambushed in the night. Lyra prepared a small fire using a fire crystal, while Yuki handled the cooking.
The scent of roasted meat and herbs filled the air as they sat around the fire, enjoying the warmth of their meal.
Mizu, curled up beside Lyra, lazily opened one eye. “So, what do you all think we’ll find in the ruins?”
Ella took a sip of her tea. “Most likely, ancient artifacts. Maybe old tomes, lost magic, and if we’re unlucky—undead.”
Yuki, stuffing her mouth with food, muttered, “I hope it’s gold. Lots of gold.”
Lyra smiled. “Whatever it is, we need to be careful. Ancient magic is unpredictable.”
They chatted a bit longer before taking turns keeping watch. The night was calm, save for the distant howls of wolves echoing through the trees.
By dawn, they packed up their camp and resumed their journey.
Approaching the Ruins
As they neared their destination, the first signs of the ruins became visible—massive stone pillars, half-buried in the earth, covered in moss and glowing runes. The air was thick with magic, a subtle hum vibrating through the ground.
Ella furrowed her brows. “The mana density here is higher than usual.”
Lyra placed a hand on one of the stone pillars. “It feels… alive.”
Mizu’s ears twitched. “Something’s definitely off.”
They moved deeper into the ruins, navigating through crumbling archways and faded murals depicting battles between humans and monstrous creatures. The deeper they went, the more distorted reality seemed—stone paths led to nowhere, doorways vanished and reappeared, and shadows moved where no light touched.
Yuki shivered. “Okay, this place is definitely cursed.”
Ella drew her spear. “Stay alert. The last thing we need is to get lost in magical anomalies.”
Lyra activated her mana detection skill, eyes glowing faintly. “There’s a strong presence ahead. Whatever’s causing this distortion is close.”
They pressed forward, descending a set of ancient stairs leading to a vast underground chamber. The air grew colder, the walls lined with intricate carvings depicting an armored figure wielding a massive sword. At the center of the chamber stood an altar, and on it—
“A sword?” Yuki’s eyes widened.
Resting on the altar was a massive black sword, its blade pulsing with dark energy. As they approached, the temperature dropped further, and the carvings on the walls flickered to life, their glow illuminating the room.
Ella tightened her grip on her weapon. “Be careful. This might be the source of the disturbance.”
Lyra stepped forward cautiously, scanning the magic radiating from the sword. “It’s not just any sword… It’s bound to something. Or someone.”
As if in response to her words, the ground trembled. The shadows on the walls pooled together, forming a towering figure—an armored knight clad in pitch-black plate, its eyes glowing with an eerie crimson light.
“The guardian,” Ella muttered.
The knight unsheathed a dark blade, pointing it toward them. Without a word, it charged.
The Battle with the Black Knight
Yuki moved first, blocking the knight’s strike with her sword. The force behind the attack sent shockwaves through the chamber, cracking the floor beneath them.
Ella dashed to the side, striking with her wind-imbued spear, but the knight deflected it effortlessly.
Lyra chanted a spell, summoning chains of light that wrapped around the knight’s arms. “Bind!”
The knight struggled against the restraints, but they held—until the dark energy surrounding it flared, shattering them.
Mizu leaped onto the knight’s back, biting into its armor with her enchanted fangs. The knight staggered, momentarily distracted.
Yuki seized the opportunity, driving her sword into the knight’s side. “Take this!”
The knight growled but did not falter. With a swift motion, it knocked Yuki away, then turned to Lyra, raising its blade.
Lyra reacted quickly, summoning a barrier just in time to block the attack. The force of the blow sent her skidding backward.
Ella lunged again, striking the knight’s legs, finally forcing it to one knee. “Now!” she shouted.
Lyra gathered her magic, chanting an incantation. A sphere of water formed in her palm, rapidly condensing into a high-pressure blast. “Aqua Lance!”
The spell struck the knight’s chest, piercing through its armor. The dark energy flickered, and with a final, echoing growl, the knight crumbled into dust.
Silence fell over the chamber.
Mizu stretched. “Well, that was fun.”
Yuki wiped her brow. “That thing was strong.”
Ella examined the remains. “But now, we can investigate properly.”
Lyra turned to the altar, where the black sword remained. The dark energy had faded, but its presence was still overwhelming.
She reached for it cautiously, feeling the ancient power radiating from the blade. “This sword… It’s connected to something beyond this place.”
Ella frowned. “Should we take it?”
Lyra hesitated, then nodded. “We need to. There’s more to this than just a simple curse.”
With that, she carefully lifted the sword, unaware that their journey had only just begun.
What do you think?
